It is a small, portable system—not a way to power an entire home—and whether you may use it depends on local rules, product approval, utility requirements, mounting, and your lease or building rules.
What plug-in solar does—and what it does not do
Plug-in solar, also called balcony solar or plug-in generation, uses photovoltaic panels and conversion equipment, usually a microinverter, to supply compatible household circuits through an outlet. Unlike a conventional rooftop installation, a complete kit can generally be removed when you move. Its output is smaller, so it offsets only part of a home’s electricity use.

When the panels generate less electricity than the home is using, the grid supplies the difference. When they generate more than the home is using, some systems can send surplus electricity toward the local network. The New Zealand Electricity Authority notes that this can happen with plug-in generation; what that means for a household meter or utility arrangement depends on local rules and equipment.

Energy Saving Trust says devices within the current UK limit are likely to contribute to routine loads such as lighting, TVs, laptops, and smart devices. High-draw appliances still need electricity from the grid. Plug-in devices also shut off during a power cut, so they are not backup generators. The UK guidance discussed here does not extend its plug-in rules to integrated batteries.

Check local law, product rules, and permission before buying
There is no single rule for renters everywhere. The rules can separately address whether a product may be sold or connected, whether it must be registered or reported to a utility, and whether a renter may mount it on a building. The table summarizes the jurisdictions covered by current official guidance cited below; it is not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your address.
| Location | What the cited official guidance says | What to check before acting |
|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | Energy Saving Trust says compliant plug-in solar became legal to use on 27 August 2026. Its guidance says a home may currently have one device, the device must be registered, and renters need permission from the landlord or freeholder. A balcony system also needs permission and suitable frames or anchors. | Confirm the exact device meets the applicable product specification and registration requirements, and obtain permission for the equipment and its mounting. This status does not currently extend to Northern Ireland. |
| United Kingdom product framework | The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s 2026 response says only devices meeting the interim product specification may be sold and plugged in under the amended framework. The specification applies to plug-in solar, not plug-in batteries. More than 85% of consultation respondents agreed with the proposed interim specification; this is a consultation result, not a safety finding or consumer survey. | Check the current requirements and the exact product’s compliance. The government’s product framework does not itself establish that a renter has permission to install equipment at a particular property. |
| Maryland | The Public Service Commission describes a 2026 law allowing one qualifying residential system per electric meter, with output up to 1,200 W and certification by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Systems up to 391 W receive a limited exemption from product-listing provisions that would require wiring or electrical-panel alterations. Customers must notify their utility and provide certification of capacity and safety features. | Check the system’s certification and capacity, notify the utility as required, and verify lease, building, and mounting requirements. The 391 W threshold is a limited product-listing exemption, not a general exemption from all safety or utility requirements. |
| New Jersey | A 1 September 2026 release from Governor Mikie Sherrill announced the signing of the Garden State Balcony Solar Act and describes it as expanding access to portable plug-in solar, including for renters. | Read the law and applicable product requirements before buying or mounting equipment; the announcement alone does not establish every installation detail. |
| Virginia | Virginia Code § 55.1-1212.1 takes effect on 1 January 2027, not before. It includes notice and documentation requirements, allows reasonable placement restrictions, makes tenants responsible for resulting damage, and excludes some tenants and installations involving unapproved alterations. | Until the effective date, do not treat these tenant provisions as already in force. Check the statute and your lease, and confirm whether your tenancy and proposed installation qualify. |
| New Zealand | The Electricity Authority says plug-in generation products are not currently available there while it gathers information before considering code changes. | Check the regulator’s current position rather than assuming a product sold elsewhere can be used locally. |
These examples show why a nationwide US legality claim would be misleading: the official sources describe different state rules and effective dates. Before purchase, check the rules for your jurisdiction, utility, lease, and building. In Great Britain, ask the landlord or freeholder where required; elsewhere, check whether your landlord, building manager, or other authority must approve the equipment or its placement.

What to check for safety and a suitable installation
A UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero study published 16 June 2026 tested representative plug-in photovoltaic devices under UK domestic electrical conditions. The tested devices behaved stably, and protective devices operated effectively, with no sustained unsafe energization or unacceptable thermal effects under those test conditions. The study also found differences among devices, particularly in export limitation and electromagnetic compatibility, and recommended product requirements and consumer guidance. Its results support a qualified conclusion about the devices and conditions tested—not a guarantee for every product, outlet, or home.

- Verify the exact model. Check it against the official product or certification information that applies where you live. Do not assume a device approved in one country or state is approved in another.
- Check the electrical setup. Follow the manufacturer’s connection instructions and check that the proposed outlet and circuit are suitable. If you are unsure, ask a qualified professional.
- Secure the panels. Use stable, appropriate mounting. For a balcony, check that the frame or anchors suit the location and obtain any required permission before attaching or placing equipment.
- Consider the sunlight and orientation. For Great Britain, Energy Saving Trust says south-facing placement performs best; east- or west-facing placement produces less at some times, and north-facing placement is not recommended.
- Follow notification and registration rules. Requirements differ by location; do not assume that plugging into an outlet removes them.
Estimate whether the output and cost suit your household
For UK-compliant devices averaging up to 800 W output, Energy Saving Trust estimates around 700 kWh of generation across a year. Its modeled annual savings are around £100 for someone home all day and £70 for someone out during the day. These are UK estimates, not guaranteed savings or estimates for other countries; actual value depends on sunlight, household use while the system is generating, and the applicable electricity arrangements.
Energy Saving Trust gives a starting price of around £450 for a UK system including panels, a microinverter, mounting brackets, and cables. Treat that as its guidance figure, not a universal or guaranteed current price. Compare the cost of a complete compliant kit with the expected savings for your location and routine, rather than comparing panels by wattage alone.

A practical comparison before purchase
- Legality and certification: Is this exact kit permitted and certified for your location?
- Permission and utility steps: Do you need landlord or building approval, registration, or utility notification?
- Mounting and sun: Can you place the panels securely where they receive useful sunlight without an unapproved alteration?
- Capacity and timing: How much electricity is the system likely to produce when you are home and using power?
- Moving out: Can the system be removed without leaving damage or violating the lease?
- Total cost: Does the complete kit and any necessary mounting hardware make sense against a location-specific savings estimate?
What a renter should do next
- Identify the rules for your address. Check official local guidance, utility requirements, and any registration or certification rules.
- Get required permission first. Ask the landlord, freeholder, or building manager about both the equipment and its proposed placement, especially before attaching anything to a balcony or exterior.
- Choose a complete, compliant kit. Confirm the exact model and its included inverter, cables, and mounting hardware meet local requirements.
- Assess the outlet, circuit, sunlight, and mounting. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult a qualified professional if electrical suitability or secure placement is uncertain.
- Install and register or notify as required. Follow the local process and retain the product documents and any permissions or confirmations.
