Warlock ransomware could disrupt a telecom company without taking down its core network. The August 2025 Colt Technology Services incident shows how an intrusion and protective shutdowns can affect customer-facing support platforms: ITPro reported disruption to Colt Online and its Voice API, while Colt said the affected internal system was separate from customer infrastructure. The incident does not establish that Warlock compromised Colt’s core network.
Could ransomware take down a telecom business?
It could interrupt important parts of the business, but “telecom outage” does not always mean the carrier’s core network has failed. Customer portals, voice APIs, provisioning workflows and internal support systems can be disrupted even when customer infrastructure remains separate and core connectivity is not reported as compromised.
In Colt’s case, the distinction is important. ITPro reported that Colt detected issues on an internal system on August 12, 2025, and took some systems offline. The resulting disruption affected Colt Online and the Voice API platform. Colt said the affected internal system was separate from customer infrastructure and that it had taken protective measures and notified relevant authorities.
ITPro attributed the Warlock claim and data-theft allegations to the ransomware group and researcher Kevin Beaumont; those allegations were not confirmed by Colt in the reporting. The group’s claimed sale of a million documents is not an independently verified statistic. The available reporting supports a real telecom incident with service disruption, not a conclusion that Warlock crippled a telecom operator’s core network.

How does WarLock ransomware get into a network?
Microsoft Security Intelligence says it first observed WarLock in coordinated campaigns in June 2025. Microsoft associates the operation with Typhoon infrastructure and reports exploitation of internet-facing enterprise applications, including Microsoft SharePoint and SmarterMail. For SharePoint, Microsoft describes exploitation associated with the ToolShell vulnerability chain. These are Microsoft’s reported observations; they do not mean every WarLock incident uses the same entry point or sequence.
After access, Microsoft reports activity that can include credential theft, persistence using legitimate administrative tools and Group Policy, attempts to disable security tools, data exfiltration and encryption. This combination matters to telecom operators because trusted administration paths and shared identities can give an intruder room to move beyond the system initially exposed.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Exposed applications: An internet-facing server can be an entry point when applicable vulnerabilities remain unpatched.
- Compromised identities: Stolen privileged credentials may let an attacker use approved tools rather than rely only on conspicuous malware.
- Expanded impact: Access to administrative systems can expose other systems or data and interfere with recovery, especially if backups are reachable from production.
Microsoft’s WarLock threat guidance says: “Immediately remove the infected device from all networks.” Treat that as an urgent containment direction for a suspected infected device, coordinated with the incident-response plan so isolation does not create avoidable service risks elsewhere.
Why can a support-system incident affect customers?
Telecom service depends on more than the network that carries traffic. Customers and staff may rely on portals, APIs and operational tools to request, manage or support services. If those layers are taken offline during containment, customers can lose access to functions or support even when the evidence does not show a core-network compromise.

For business continuity planning, map dependencies rather than treating “the network” as one system. Identify which customer and staff workflows depend on portals, APIs, identity services, administrative platforms and data stores, then determine which functions can continue safely if one of those components is isolated. Communications-infrastructure hardening guidance from CISA and partner agencies addresses visibility and device security broadly; it is not WarLock-specific.
Which defenses should telecom operators prioritize?
Reduce exposure and patch promptly
Inventory internet-facing SharePoint, mail and other enterprise systems. Apply relevant security updates promptly, and restrict administrative interfaces to authorized access paths. Microsoft specifically recommends patching exposed applications and limiting administrative exposure.

Protect privileged identities
Require multifactor authentication for remote access and administrative accounts, apply least privilege, and monitor privileged activity. Do not give web or mail service accounts domain-administrator rights. These controls reduce the chance that one compromised account can become a route to broad administrative access.
Watch for misuse of legitimate tools
Monitor endpoint and network activity for unusual administrative actions, lateral movement, suspicious service creation and unexpected data transfers. Because attackers may use legitimate management tools, detection should consider whether the activity is unusual for the account, device, time and operational task—not just whether a tool is normally allowed.

Keep backups outside the attacker’s reach
Maintain tested offline or immutable backup copies separated from production, using separate access credentials. Microsoft warns that online backup repositories may be targeted. A backup is not a reliable recovery path if compromised production credentials can also delete, encrypt or alter it.
Design for telecom operations
Evaluate controls by what they cover, how well they are isolated from production, how quickly they support verified recovery, and whether they have been tested with the organization’s telecom environment and high-availability requirements. CISA’s communications-infrastructure guidance can inform visibility and device-security planning, while Microsoft’s WarLock guidance is relevant to the specific threat activity it describes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a telecom company do after a ransomware attack?
Use the organization’s incident-response plan, coordinate decisions across security and service operations, and involve qualified incident responders and appropriate authorities. CISA’s ransomware guide provides general preparation and response guidance. Do not restore systems simply because they appear available: Microsoft’s guidance calls for recovery only after the environment is verified clean.
- Contain the suspected compromise. Follow the response plan and isolate affected devices or systems in a coordinated way. Microsoft’s immediate instruction for an infected device is to remove it from all networks.
- Preserve evidence. Retain relevant logs and other evidence for investigation before routine changes or restoration obscure what happened. Assign responsibility for evidence handling and coordinate with responders.
- Assess service dependencies. Determine which customer-facing and support functions rely on affected systems, what can remain safely available, and which continuity procedures apply. Keep technical containment decisions aligned with operational teams.
- Communicate through assigned leads. Prepare customer, employee and authority communications as appropriate to the incident and applicable obligations. Use verified facts and distinguish confirmed service effects from unverified claims.
- Verify before restoring. Establish that the environment is clean, then follow a defined recovery sequence using protected backups. Confirm that restored services and their dependencies are safe before returning them to normal operation.
Before an incident, assign owners for isolation decisions, evidence preservation, service continuity, customer communications and recovery approval. A plan that has been exercised against realistic system dependencies is more useful than a list of tools without clear decision rights.
