Christa Pike could still face execution because the September 30, 2026, lethal-injection attempt did not, in the sources available as of October 3, vacate her death sentence. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has paused the other scheduled executions for 2026 and ordered an independent review. No new execution date for Pike is reported, so another attempt is possible but neither scheduled nor certain.
Why the failed attempt did not automatically end Pike’s death sentence
An execution attempt and the legal sentence behind it are separate things. The Tennessee Supreme Court had set September 30, 2026, as Pike’s execution date. The attempt took place, but the current reports and court materials described here do not say that her death sentence was overturned, commuted or otherwise vacated.
That means the failed attempt, by itself, does not establish that Tennessee has lost the legal authority to carry out the sentence. Any future execution would still depend on the case’s legal posture, the outcome of the state’s review and subsequent decisions about whether and when to schedule it. The sources available as of October 3 do not report a new date.
What happened during the September 30 attempt
Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. Her attorneys said the state administered two doses of pentobarbital and that she remained alive. The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) said it followed every step of its established protocol, which it said did not authorize additional procedures beyond those carried out. The state has not publicly explained what failed in the accounts reported by the Associated Press.

What is known about Pike’s condition
Pike was taken to a hospital. Her attorneys reported that she was unconscious, on a ventilator and in critical condition while receiving life-saving treatment. Those details were attributed to her attorneys in the Associated Press’s reporting; the reports cited here do not provide an independent medical account of her condition.
What her attorneys allege about the IV lines
Pike’s attorneys alleged that the IV lines were improperly placed or that veins had blown, so some or all of the drug may have entered tissue rather than her bloodstream. They wrote that execution-team members apparently did not realize the lines were not correctly placed. This is the attorneys’ account, not an established medical finding; officials had not publicly explained the cause in the reporting available as of October 3.

What Tennessee’s protocol says—and what it leaves unresolved
TDOC says its December 2024 revised protocol uses a single drug, pentobarbital. According to Associated Press reporting on the protocol, it provides for a backup set of syringes if the person is not deceased after the first set, but does not specify what to do if the person remains alive after the second. TDOC said its staff followed the protocol and that no additional procedures were authorized.
This reported gap helps explain why the state’s position that it followed the protocol does not answer the central question of what happened medically or what should happen if a person survives the protocol’s described doses. The independent review ordered after the attempt may examine those issues; the reports cited here do not give its findings.

What the pause and independent review mean
Governor Bill Lee paused the remaining Tennessee executions scheduled for 2026 and ordered an independent third-party review after Pike’s attempt. In a statement quoted by the Associated Press, Lee said carrying out a lawful sentence must be done in a way that is “not only legal and constitutional, but is effective.”
The pause is a scheduling action, not evidence that Pike’s sentence has been changed. It also does not establish that Tennessee will make another attempt. The review could inform later decisions, but no outcome or new date for Pike is reported in the available sources.

How Pike’s earlier legal challenges fit in
A filing in the U.S. Supreme Court docket recounts the September 30 execution order and Pike’s challenges to Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol, including constitutional claims. A party filing describes arguments and procedural history; it is not itself a court ruling that the protocol is unconstitutional. The materials cited here do not establish such a ruling.
Accordingly, the fact that Pike challenged the protocol should not be confused with a court having invalidated it. The cited sources also do not establish that a new execution method has been approved or scheduled for her.

Why Tennessee’s execution history matters, but does not explain this attempt
An independent review released in 2022 found that Tennessee had not complied with its lethal-injection process since the protocol was revised in 2018. As reported by the Associated Press, the review found required endotoxin testing had not been conducted in the executions it examined and that one execution drug had not been tested for potency. AP also reported that the state’s unidentified executioner had no formal healthcare training.
Tennessee later adopted the single-drug protocol that TDOC says it uses now. The earlier findings are relevant background to oversight and procedure, but they do not show what caused Pike’s failed attempt. That cause remains unestablished in the reports cited here.
The case behind Pike’s sentence
Pike was 18 when she participated in the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, for which Pike was sentenced to death. That crime is the basis of the sentence; the current dispute concerns the attempted execution and the state’s procedures for carrying it out.
Death Penalty Information Center executive director Robin M. Maher described Pike’s experience as “singular and unparalleled,” as quoted by the Associated Press. University of Richmond law professor Corinna Barrett Lain said, “Tennessee has botched executions so badly that two people this year have survived their own executions,” also as quoted by AP. These are attributed characterizations, not legal findings or medical determinations. AP reported that four of more than 140 U.S. executions since 2022 had been carried out in Tennessee.
