Alabama’s Keelon Russell and Mississippi State’s Kamario Taylor entered their October 3, 2026, matchup as unbeaten first-year starters drawing Heisman attention. In the Associated Press preview published October 2, Russell had 1,129 passing yards and eight touchdown passes through four games; Taylor had 1,192 yards and 14 touchdowns. Mississippi State was scheduled to host No. 7 Alabama at 11 a.m. Central.
What to know about Alabama–Mississippi State
The game was scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, in Starkville. Mississippi State’s official media center listed an 11 a.m. kickoff, and the AP preview framed the matchup as No. 7 Alabama visiting No. 16 Mississippi State.
The AP report by Henry Sklar, published October 2, described both quarterbacks as having unbeaten starts and unquestioned places in the Heisman Trophy conversation. That is pregame framing, not a prediction or a claim about the game’s eventual outcome.
How the quarterbacks compared before kickoff
The AP preview reported the following figures through the teams’ first four games. They are a pregame snapshot, not final-season totals.

| Quarterback | Completion rate | Passing yards | Touchdown passes | Interceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keelon Russell, Alabama | 71% | 1,129 | 8 | 2 |
| Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State | 69% | 1,192 | 14 | 2 |
Taylor had the larger passing-yardage and touchdown totals in that snapshot, while Russell had the higher completion percentage; both had two interceptions. AP said Taylor’s 14 touchdown passes were tied for the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision at the time of its preview. Those early figures describe different teams and do not, by themselves, establish which quarterback was better or forecast how either would perform in Starkville.
Why the matchup drew attention
The appeal was the meeting of two unbeaten first-year starters whose early passing production put them in the Heisman discussion, with Mississippi State hosting a highly ranked Alabama team. AP characterized the Bulldogs’ offense as averaging 533.3 yards and 43 points per game, and noted the team had lost 11 straight games against top-10 opponents. Those are AP-reported pregame context figures, not independently verified statistics here.

What the available figures do—and don’t—say
- They show early production: the quarterback totals cover the first four games as reported in the AP preview.
- They are not a head-to-head test: the figures came from separate games and team contexts.
- They do not establish the outcome: no final score or postgame quarterback statistics are established by the pregame information available for this article.
