Combat and teamwork are central

Heroes and careers offer build variety
Five heroes and 15 careers give players a range of roles and ways to approach missions. Career-specific abilities, talents, weapons, and equipment create reasons to experiment with different characters and team combinations. That variety supports replay, especially for players who like learning a roster rather than settling on one character.
There is more than one mode
The cooperative missions are the core experience, but Versus adds an asymmetrical mode in which players alternate between the Heroes and player-controlled Pactsworn. Fatshark describes it as a free update for owners, with 4v4 play and mode-specific rewards; the support page says it requires no separate download. Fatshark’s Versus FAQ explains the mode’s format.
Progression and onboarding received changes
Patch 6.0.0 changed difficulty access and rewards, and added clearer in-game information. Fatshark’s progression update also explains the rationale for the Handbook, which was introduced to help players understand mechanics that extend beyond the Prologue. These changes show that the progression and guidance systems have been adjusted, though they do not remove the game’s underlying learning curve.
Vermintide 2 cons
New players may need to learn beyond the tutorial
Career abilities, talents, equipment, enemy behavior, and difficulty choices all contribute to the game’s systems. Fatshark said the Prologue did not explain every nuance and introduced the Handbook to cover mechanics. Players who want a game that teaches everything quickly and keeps its systems simple may find the onboarding demanding.
Progression involves repeated missions and gear
Character leveling, loot chests, item power, crafting, and difficulty-linked rewards are part of the progression structure. Fatshark reworked parts of this system in Patch 6.0.0 with the aim of making progression smoother, but the core loop still rewards playing missions repeatedly. Some features depend on your platform
Fatshark lists mod support for PC only. Versus also warrants a platform check: in a March 4, 2024 report about its closed alpha, Fatshark said technical memory and networking limits left it without a viable console alternative at that time. A later launch announcement confirms the mode’s release, but the materials cited here do not establish its current availability on every platform. Versus balance feedback is historical, not a verdict on the live mode
In the closed-alpha report, Fatshark described feedback that the mode favored Heroes and that the Hero team reached the safe zone more often than desired. The developer said it adjusted damage, pickups, and talents for a subsequent test. That documents an issue raised during an alpha and an effort to address it; it does not establish the current live balance.

The game’s official description centers on co-op, so its clearest fit is for players who want cooperative missions, especially with friends or a team willing to coordinate. Its roster and progression can still offer things to work toward, but those features do not change the team-based nature of the core combat. If you mainly want a solo action game, or prefer competitive PvP as the main attraction, make sure the modes available on your platform match what you want before buying or installing.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: players who enjoy co-op melee action, teamwork, trying different character builds, and repeating missions as their heroes progress.
- A less natural fit: players who want minimal onboarding, little gear management, or a game that does not ask them to replay content.
- Check first: players choosing it mainly for Versus or PC mods, since feature availability depends on platform and the cited materials do not confirm current Versus support on every platform.
What the alpha figures do—and do not—tell you
Fatshark’s March 4, 2024 closed-alpha report recorded slightly over 3,600 PC players, 6,056 rounds across 2,093 games, and draws in 7% of alpha matches. The report said matches on the Screaming Bell Versus mission generally lasted 20–30 minutes. These figures describe that test, not current player numbers or the live mode’s present performance.
The same report said 94% of survey respondents had played Vermintide for more than 60 hours; 85% usually played Legend or Cataclysm, and another 13% played Champion. Because the respondents were heavily experienced players, those percentages should not be treated as representative of the wider player base. They do, however, show that the alpha feedback came largely from people already familiar with the game.
Verdict: Is Vermintide 2 worth playing?
Vermintide 2 is a strong candidate if your priority is team-based, first-person melee combat with a roster worth exploring. Its main trade-offs are the time needed to learn its systems and a replay-and-gear progression loop that will not suit everyone. Treat Versus and mod support as platform-specific considerations, and verify availability for your system rather than assuming every version has the same features.
