WARDOGS, Xbox Series S and Low-End Hardware: What the Developer Has Actually Said

BULKHEAD has discussed WARDOGS’s low-end performance targets and PC graphics tiers. The public statements do not establish that Xbox Series S is causing features to be held back.

BULKHEAD has said it is targeting 60 FPS on low-spec hardware and building separate graphics options for lower- and higher-end PCs. But the available statements do not verify that the studio is holding back WARDOGS features because of Xbox Series S. Microsoft lists the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S; that confirms support, not a Series S-driven feature cut.

What BULKHEAD has said about WARDOGS performance

In its developer-published performance video, BULKHEAD says performance goals were part of development from the beginning. The studio says it has been trying to reach 60 FPS on low-spec hardware and calls 60 FPS its minimum bar. Those are stated targets, not independently verified frame-rate results on specific PCs or consoles.

The same video describes graphics tiers intended to cover different PC hardware:

  • Potato Mode: a lower-end graphics option.
  • Overkill: a preset the studio said would be limited at launch to 40-series graphics cards and above. That is a launch-era statement; check the game’s current settings and requirements for present availability.

These comments concern PC performance targets and graphics presets. They do not identify a WARDOGS feature removed or reduced for Xbox Series S.

What the Xbox Series S listing confirms

Microsoft’s Xbox store listing identifies BULKHEAD as developer, Team17 Digital Ltd as publisher, and WARDOGS as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. The listing establishes the game’s Series X|S platform status. It does not say the Series S caused the team to withhold a feature.

Is WARDOGS holding back features because of Series S?

That specific causal claim is not established by the available statements. The sources do not provide an attributable, verbatim statement from BULKHEAD naming features held back because of Series S. A Steam community post summarizes a separate developer interview as discussing a 2 km player and vehicle render distance and says the team is holding back, but it does not connect that decision to Series S. It is a secondary summary, not a primary transcript, so it cannot establish the headline’s cause.

  • HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

It is useful to keep three different claims separate: a developer’s performance target, a graphics option available on a class of PC hardware, and a console feature decision attributed to Series S. The first two appear in BULKHEAD’s performance video; the third remains unverified.

Why low-end targets can have benefits—and trade-offs

Designing around lower-powered hardware can require optimization work, but planning for a constrained target early can also shape a game’s performance requirements and broaden the audience able to run it. A TechRadar set of developer interviews discusses the work involved in supporting Series S alongside more powerful systems. One interviewee, Rose McKee, game producer for Slave Zero X, said parity requirements can be frustrating when they are difficult to meet, while arguing that planning can make the issue manageable and benefit consumers. That is general industry context, not a statement about WARDOGS or BULKHEAD.

  • Xbox One games and accessories work together

For WARDOGS, the evidence supports a narrower conclusion: BULKHEAD has publicly emphasized performance goals and differentiated PC graphics options, while the Xbox listing confirms Series X|S optimization. Neither fact demonstrates that Series S is holding back particular features.
