Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio with Rear 9 and Sub 9: What the System Includes

The Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio is a three-speaker front system; the BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 and Sub 9 are separate, compatible upgrades that add wireless surround speakers and dedicated bass. Sony lists both add-ons as compatible with the Trio, but independent listening evidence cited here covers a Rear 9 and Sub 8—not the exact Rear 9 and Sub 9 setup.

What the Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 each do

The BRAVIA Theatre Trio is the system’s front stage: separate left, centre and right speakers rather than one long soundbar. Sony says the centre handles dialogue, while the left and right speakers broaden the front presentation. Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced are supported with compatible content. Sony also says 360 Spatial Sound Mapping can create up to 24 phantom speakers; these are virtualized positions, not additional physical speakers. The Trio includes a USB Type-C microphone for room calibration. Sony’s Trio product information

The two add-ons address different parts of the system:

  • BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 (SA-RS9): a pair of wireless rear speakers with up-firing drivers and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. They add physical surround channels to the room.
  • BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9): a separate subwoofer for low-frequency output. Sony specifies dual opposing 200 mm aluminum drivers and up to 600 W of power; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

Neither add-on is included in the Trio itself. The full configuration therefore means three front speakers, the separate Rear 9 pair and the separate Sub 9.

Compatibility and setup

Sony lists both Rear 9 and Sub 9 as compatible with the BRAVIA Theatre Trio. Compatibility can still depend on region, product software and the exact equipment combination, so check Sony’s current compatibility information before ordering. Sony also says Rear 9 can connect wirelessly to certain compatible BRAVIA TVs without a soundbar, but only when the TV appears on its compatibility list. Sony’s Rear 9 compatibility and setup information

Set up the Rear 9

  1. Confirm the Trio and Rear 9 are supported together in your region and check that their software is current.
  2. Place the rear speakers where they can serve the listening area, then follow the BRAVIA Connect app’s setup guidance.
  3. For app-based setup, connect the phone and product to the same home network. Sony notes that app features depend on region, compatible products and software.
  4. Use the app’s calibration process to account for the speakers’ positions and your room. The available review describes calibration through BRAVIA Connect and says it can account for speaker location and height.

Sony says a swivel wall mount is included with Rear 9. Check the package details for your region if wall mounting is part of your plan.

Adding a second subwoofer

Sony says two Sub 9 units can be used only with a main system that supports a dual-subwoofer setup, and the two subwoofers must be the same model. Do not assume that adding a second Sub 9 is supported simply because the first one works: confirm the exact Trio configuration in current product documentation.

What independent listening evidence says—and does not say

What Hi-Fi? reviewed the Trio as a 3.0.2-channel system, reporting up-firing drivers in the left and right speakers, HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect support. These are review-reported details; consult Sony’s current regional specifications for the configuration you intend to buy. What Hi-Fi?’s BRAVIA Theatre Trio review

The reviewer praised the Trio’s scale, immersive presentation and genuine left-right stereo separation. The review also noted that some rivals sounded cleaner or more detailed, that the Trio has no traditional display, and that the centre speaker could buzz slightly on very deep bass passages in the standalone setup.

What Hi-Fi? also tried the Trio with Rear 9 speakers and a Sub 8. The reviewer found that this expanded configuration increased immersion and that moving bass duties to the subwoofer removed the centre-speaker buzz heard in the standalone setup. That listening result applies to the tested Sub 8 combination; it is not evidence of how the Sub 9 version sounds. The cited sources provide no independent listening test or measurements for the exact Trio plus Rear 9 plus Sub 9 configuration.

How to compare this setup with alternatives

The Trio with both add-ons is most relevant if you want distinct front speakers, physical rear surrounds and a dedicated subwoofer. Compare it with a premium single soundbar, a bar bundled with surrounds and a subwoofer, or a speaker-based system such as Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Quad. Check the following before deciding:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Front-channel separation: Does the alternative use separate left, centre and right speakers, or create the front stage from one enclosure?
  • What is included: Are rear speakers and a subwoofer in the box, or separate purchases?
  • Room and placement: Can your room accommodate the Trio’s separate front units, rear speakers and subwoofer in useful positions?
  • Formats and connections: Confirm supported audio formats, HDMI connections and streaming features for the exact model and region.
  • Calibration: Check what setup is required and whether the system can account for your speaker positions and room.
  • Total cost: Compare the price of the complete configuration, not just the Trio or another system’s base unit.

In its own listening comparison, What Hi-Fi? found the Trio’s separated front channels gave it greater scale than the Sonos Arc Ultra, while the KEF XIO sounded cleaner and more detailed. Those are that publication’s subjective findings, not universal measurements or a direct comparison of the complete Sub 9 configuration.

US launch prices and current-price context

Sony Electronics’ March 2026 US launch announcement gave suggested retail prices of $749.99 for Rear 9 and $899.99 for Sub 9. Those are launch MSRPs, not guaranteed current prices. On 9 October 2026, Sony’s US product pages displayed sale prices of $549.99 for Rear 9 and $599.99 for Sub 9; sale prices can change. Sony’s UK announcement said Trio preorders would begin on 27 May 2026, but the available information does not establish a current universal Trio price. Should you choose this configuration?

Choose the Trio with Rear 9 and Sub 9 if you specifically want its separate front speakers alongside physical wireless surrounds and a dedicated subwoofer, and your room can accommodate the placements and setup. Treat Sony’s spatial-mapping, driver and power figures as manufacturer claims, and treat the independent review’s expanded-system findings as evidence for Rear 9 with Sub 8 only. If those distinctions matter to your decision, audition the exact combination where possible and verify current regional compatibility, prices and stock.
