WARDOGS Early Access Review: Is It Worth Playing Now?

WARDOGS has a promising three-team objective core, but its progression and endgame are still evolving. Here’s who should buy in Early Access—and who should wait.

WARDOGS is playable now, but it is best suited to players who enjoy large-scale tactical fights and are comfortable with unfinished, changing systems. Its three-team objective mode gives combat a clear purpose, while per-life loadout spending, vehicles, logistics and support play add meaningful decisions. The main reservation is progression and endgame balance: launch-era beta impressions raised concerns, and Bulkhead’s CEO later acknowledged endgame problems. Buy for the core match loop, not on the assumption that planned content or balance work is already complete.

What is WARDOGS?

WARDOGS is an online tactical first-person shooter developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17. It entered Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026. BULKHEAD describes the current build as a game for up to 100 players split across three teams, fighting on destructible battlefields with firearms, vehicles, building and destruction. These are developer-published feature descriptions, not independent performance measurements. Steam store page

How a match works

The central mode takes inspiration from King of the Hill. Teams contest randomized 2×2 km control zones within larger maps. The team with the most players in the zone scores, and the first to reach 100 points wins. Players start with $10,000 in in-game currency and buy a loadout for each life, tying equipment choices to the match economy rather than a single fixed class selection. Steam store page

The developer says the Early Access build also includes dynamic objectives, cash and XP progression, vehicles, logistics, support-focused play and proximity voice chat. That describes the advertised scope; it should not be read as independent confirmation of stability or performance.

What makes the gameplay appealing?

The appeal is the combination of a legible objective and room for teams to improvise. The control zone gives a large battle a shared focus, while loadout purchases and the mix of combat, vehicles, logistics and support let players contribute in different ways. Unlike a tightly prescribed class roster, WARDOGS appears to leave more responsibility to players to decide what a team needs.

That flexibility has a cost: a squad can lack useful tools if nobody chooses to bring them. In a launch-day feature based on a closed beta, PC Gamer’s reporter praised the objective and teamplay loop, in-match spending and flexible roles, but observed that informal roles could leave teams without capabilities they needed. That is one reporter’s beta experience, not a guarantee of how every live match plays. PC Gamer’s beta-based feature

Is progression and balance a problem?

There is reason to treat progression and later-match balance as active concerns, rather than assume they are settled. PC Gamer’s beta-based report noted that XP incentives could encourage overly cautious play. In a September 29, 2026 report, PC Gamer quoted Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer discussing XP grind, armor, mortar ammunition and endgame balance. Brammer described the late game bluntly as “sh*t” and said Season 1 had been intentionally short because the studio knew endgame balancing issues existed. His comments acknowledge problems; they do not establish how they affect every current match or whether a specific fix has since shipped. PC Gamer’s September 29 report

For a buyer, the practical distinction is between a promising core loop and a finished progression system. If you mainly want to learn the maps, contest objectives and experiment with loadouts, evolving balance may be part of the appeal. If you want a settled endgame or a progression track whose incentives are already demonstrably well tuned, the available reporting gives you reason to wait for current patch details and player feedback.

What does Early Access include, and what is still planned?

BULKHEAD says the game is fully playable and uses Early Access to gather feedback and iterate. Its Steam Q&A estimates roughly one to two years in Early Access, while explicitly allowing the duration to change. The developer’s stated plans include additional maps, weapons, vehicles and objective variety, deeper progression and seasonal metagame systems, plus continuing work on balance, performance and stability. These are plans, not guaranteed features or a fixed release schedule. Steam store page

The developer also says the Early Access price is planned to be lower than the eventual full-release price. Steam prices vary by region, and no current regional price is established here, so check the live store listing before deciding whether the present price suits you. Steam’s Early Access notice also cautions that the game is incomplete and may change. Steam store page

Is WARDOGS worth buying in Early Access?

Consider buying now if the three-team, large-scale objective format sounds fun on its own and you are willing to live with unfinished content and balance changes. The case for playing now rests on its match structure and flexible teamplay, not on a promise that progression or the endgame is already polished.

Wait if you prefer complete content, a settled meta, or clear evidence that progression incentives and endgame balance have been addressed. Before purchase, check the live Steam page for current price, recent updates and the PC requirements; the evidence available here does not establish a current requirements table or patch-specific performance assessment.

Platforms, servers and communication

PC now, console plan for 2028

WARDOGS launched in Steam Early Access. An official launch-trailer announcement says “COMING TO CONSOLES IN 2028.” That is an announced plan, not a confirmed release date or a platform-by-platform schedule. Official launch-trailer announcement

Server issues and community hosting

The official announcement feed documented launch login queues and connection problems, followed by a hotfix intended to address players being unable to join, unexpected kicks and extended queue times. Those posts establish launch-period issues, not that the same problems persist now; current server health and the latest patch state are not established here. The feed also named QONZER, BisectHosting and xREALM as approved community-server hosting partners ahead of launch, which is relevant if you are interested in running a community server. Proximity voice chat

The Steam description lists proximity voice chat. A headset with a microphone is a practical optional accessory if you want to use voice, but the published information does not establish that one is required or recommend a particular model. Steam store page
