Can an Affordable Fitness Band Replace an Expensive Smartwatch?

For everyday steps, heart-rate checks, sleep tracking and long stretches between charges, an affordable fitness band can be a better buy than an expensive smartwatch. A smartwatch earns its higher price when you need independent GPS, richer phone-linked features or more detailed workout tools. The right choice depends less on the price tag than on whether you need your wearable to work without your phone.

What a budget fitness band can—and cannot—do

Most people looking for a simple wearable want a few things: activity and heart-rate tracking, sleep information, workout modes and notifications. An inexpensive band can cover those basics without the cost or frequent charging associated with some feature-rich watches.

Which? found that average heart-rate sensor differences in its tests were no more than 4% across resting, walking and higher-intensity training. That suggests a low price alone does not make a tracker’s heart-rate readings useless. It does not establish that every band is equally accurate, or that wrist-based readings are a substitute for medical measurements.

Activity-mode counts can also look impressive without telling you how useful a device will be. Which? noted that most trackers in its review set that year had often more than 150 activities, but a long menu of modes is not the same as advanced training analysis. If your priority is everyday movement and general workout logging, a basic band may be enough; if you need reliable route and distance data, GPS matters more.

Where an expensive smartwatch can justify its cost

GPS that works without your phone

Some affordable bands use a paired phone’s location rather than having GPS built in. TechRadar says the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 relies on a phone for location tracking. That can help keep cost down and battery life up, but you need to bring your phone if you want location-based workout tracking.

A device with built-in GPS can record a route without the phone. Which? lists built-in GPS on the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 9 Pro, along with a 1.74-inch AMOLED display and more than 150 sport modes. It also notes that this model lacks NFC and call handling. The Smart Band 10 and Mi Smart Band 9 Pro are different models; their GPS specifications should not be confused.

Phone-linked features

Smartwatches generally offer more ways to interact with a phone: depending on the model and paired handset, they may let you handle calls, respond to messages, control music, use apps or make payments. A fitness band may show notifications or offer a subset of these features, but support varies. Check the exact model’s compatibility and feature list rather than assuming that every watch—or band—can perform the same tasks.

Battery life: compare real use with the claim

Paying more does not automatically buy longer battery life. In the trackers it reviewed, Which? reported that models costing under £50 averaged just under 10.5 days, compared with around 9.5 days for pricier trackers. Those are averages for Which?’s reviewed set, not a guarantee for a particular model or a universal result across the market.

Manufacturer figures also depend on how a device is used. Amazfit says its Band 7 lasts up to 18 days in regular typical use, or up to 28 days in battery-saver mode. Huawei lists up to 14 days for Band 7 in typical use and 10 days in heavy use, with its own stated test assumptions. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.

Actual battery life can be shorter when features such as frequent notifications, continuous monitoring or GPS are used. In a Tom’s Guide review, Nikita Achanta reported getting 13 days from the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 Pro, compared with Xiaomi’s claim of up to 21 days. That is one reviewer’s experience under their usage, not a controlled test or a promise of what every owner will see.

How to decide whether you need a smartwatch

  1. Decide whether you will carry your phone during workouts. If you want a route recorded without it, choose a model with built-in GPS. If phone-dependent location is acceptable, a less expensive band may suit you.
  2. List the phone features you actually use. If you need to respond to messages, take calls or pay from your wrist, verify that the specific wearable supports those functions with your phone. A band’s notification support does not automatically mean it can handle replies or calls.
  3. Set realistic tracking expectations. For steps, general activity and heart-rate trends, a basic tracker may cover your needs. For route-based workouts or more advanced training features, compare the individual device’s GPS and analysis tools instead of relying on its number of workout modes.
  4. Compare battery claims on like terms. Look for whether the quoted figure refers to typical use, heavy use or a power-saving mode. Consider which features you will keep enabled, and treat maximum manufacturer figures as estimates rather than guaranteed runtimes.
  5. Check price and compatibility where you live. Prices and model availability vary by region and over time. Confirm that the wearable supports your phone and the features you want in your local market.

So, is an affordable fitness band good enough?

Yes, if your main goal is everyday health and activity tracking and you are comfortable using your phone for any location tracking the band cannot do itself. The Which? results show why a higher price alone is not a reliable proxy for longer battery life or better average heart-rate readings. A more expensive smartwatch is worth considering when you specifically need independent GPS or phone-linked tools that an affordable band does not provide.
