Native Camera, an Android video app from N8 Media, offers another way to capture video with more manual control and less reliance on some manufacturers’ default camera processing. It is not a guaranteed quality upgrade: available features depend on the phone, and the available sources do not establish that it produces better footage on every device.
What Native Camera changes
N8 Media describes Native Camera as an alternate capture path that can bypass some manufacturer-supplied processing. The practical appeal is having another set of recording controls and output options—not a promise that the app will improve every clip. The developer positions it for Pixel phones, but that description is not a complete compatibility list.

Android camera access and processing vary by model. A phone may restrict third-party apps from accessing particular camera functions, and the app’s own listing cautions that some devices do not support every feature. Check compatibility for your exact phone before relying on a specific mode.

The Google Play listing describes standard 8-bit SDR recording. It lists Native Camera Pro, a paid in-app upgrade, as the way to access additional features. The listed Pro options include 10-bit HLG HDR video, custom high video bitrates, and Boosted ISO modes on compatible devices.

These are feature descriptions from the Google Play listing, not independent image-quality measurements. A higher bit depth or bitrate can provide more latitude in some workflows, but neither guarantees that a particular shot will look better; lighting, camera hardware, stabilization, and the recording settings also matter.
Check fit before using it for important footage
- Confirm your phone’s support. Read the current Google Play listing and N8 Media’s Native Camera page. Treat the developer’s Pixel positioning as guidance, not proof that every Pixel feature works on every model—or that other Android phones are fully supported.
- Separate free recording from Pro features. If you need 10-bit HLG HDR, custom high bitrates, or Boosted ISO, confirm the feature is supported on your phone and note that the listing places these options in the paid Pro upgrade.
- Make a short test clip. Try the intended lens, resolution, frame rate, stabilization, audio setup, and lighting. Review the saved file in the app or editor you plan to use; do not assume that a mode shown in the interface is available or behaves identically across devices.
- Compare against your phone’s camera app. Record the same scene with both apps, keeping the framing and conditions as consistent as practical. Judge the result for your own use—such as exposure, motion, color, detail, and audio—rather than assuming a less-processed path is automatically preferable.
Where recordings go, and what the privacy disclosures say
The Google Play listing says Native Camera saves recordings locally in the device’s DCIM/NativeCamera directory. N8 Media’s privacy policy, effective July 7, 2026, says the app stores captured media on the device and does not send it to the developer’s servers or third parties. The policy also says the app does not collect analytics or usage data, use advertising or tracking SDKs, or create accounts.

Those statements describe the app according to its developer, not every other service on the phone. The policy notes that a user-enabled operating-system or other-app backup may separately upload camera-roll files under that service’s settings. Check your own backup settings if you want to control where local recordings are copied.
How to compare it with other Android camera apps
Open Camera and ProShot are other third-party options mentioned in coverage of Android video apps, but the available sources do not provide a controlled, feature-by-feature comparison or establish a best app. To choose among them, verify the current listings and test on your phone across the factors that affect your footage:
