To get the RHIB keys in How to Fish, complete the scientist’s bait request, defeat the regular Bowhead Whale, throw its body into the volcano, then defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale and hand its Whale Fin to the scientist. Take the keys and start the RHIB to trigger the ending; defeating the final boss alone does not finish the game.
Before you start: reach Volcano Island and complete the bait request
Volcano Island is also called Island 5. A walkthrough describes the route as Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano, with quest completions unlocking later destinations. The endgame chain begins with the scientist’s request for five fish or catches, which supplies the bait used to summon the regular whale.

Guides differ on whether any five fish count or whether the catches must be native to Volcano Island and obtained through the Scientific Lure route. Prepare for both whale fights before triggering the first
The regular whale’s body is needed to start the harder encounter, so the two fights are effectively one linked sequence. Guides recommend an upgraded assault rifle and a supply of cooked fish for healing. These are recommendations, not verified minimum requirements or a quantified weapon comparison.

Do not sell, cook, or otherwise lose the regular Bowhead Whale’s body after the first fight. You will need to carry it to the volcano, and the Mutated Bowhead Whale appears when you throw it in. A guide reviewed against version 1.0.5 and dated August 23, 2026 advises preparing before the first whale for this reason; that version marker does not establish that every mechanic remained unchanged through October 2026.
Complete the whale and key sequence
- Use the scientist’s bait. Once the required catches register, use the bait to summon the regular Bowhead Whale.
- Defeat the regular Bowhead Whale and keep its body. This is the first encounter, not the final boss.
- Take the body to the volcano and throw it in. This triggers the Mutated Bowhead Whale encounter.
- Defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale and collect its Whale Fin. Some guides call this creature a mutated or lava whale; they describe the same final encounter in this sequence.
- Return to the scientist and hand over the Whale Fin. The scientist then gives you the RHIB keys, also described by some guides as military-boat keys.
- Go to the RHIB and use its start interaction. Starting the boat triggers the ending.
If the scientist does not give you the keys
- Confirm the trophy. The cited hand-in is the final boss’s Whale Fin, not ordinary meat or another creature’s trophy.
- Confirm you fought the final whale. Defeating the regular Bowhead Whale is not enough; take its body to the volcano and defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale.
- Recheck the bait request. Because guides describe the five-catch requirement differently, use the scientist’s live quest wording and verify the counter registers your catches.
- After the hand-in, finish the boat interaction. Collect the keys, go to the RHIB, and use its start control; the key hand-in itself does not trigger credits.
What the boss guides establish—and what they do not
The guides describe attacks such as charges, stomps, and lava attacks at a high level, but they do not establish reliable current health, damage values, or precise attack timings. No exact stat or dodge window is necessary to follow the progression chain, and inventing one would make the instructions less dependable.

The central sequence—bait, regular whale, body in the volcano, mutated whale, Whale Fin hand-in, and RHIB start—is repeated across several unofficial guides. Their agreement supports the route, but it is not a substitute for developer documentation or a guarantee against version-specific quest differences.
