Vultr Review 2026: Plans, Pricing and What Happens When You Stop a Server

Vultr’s Cloud Compute starts with a documented $0.005/hour configuration, but exact rates vary by plan and location. Learn how hourly billing, stopped servers and add-on charges affect cost.

Vultr charges for server usage by the hour, and shutting a server down does not stop the charges: you must destroy it to release its reserved resources. Its Cloud Compute overview lists a small configuration at $0.005 per hour, but the title’s “from $2.50/mo” figure is not established as a current universal price. Check the live rate for your chosen plan and data-center location before budgeting.

How Vultr billing works

Vultr says, “Vultr bills all servers on an hourly basis.” Its billing documentation, updated December 16, 2025, specifies a one-hour minimum. For non-GPU server types, including Cloud Compute, the monthly billing ceiling is 672 hours; GPU instances have a 730-hour ceiling. Vultr generates invoices on the first of each month for charges accrued during the preceding billing period. Vultr Docs: How Am I Billed for My Servers?

This is usage billing with monthly caps, not evidence of a traditional fixed-term renewal. The total depends on the server configuration, how long it exists, its location, and any additional services or usage charges.

Stopping a server does not stop billing

A stopped server still reserves resources and continues to accrue charges. Vultr says you must destroy the server to stop billing. Before destroying it, save any data you need: deleting the instance is not the same as merely powering it off, and should be treated as a destructive action.

Vultr Cloud Compute prices and the $2.50 claim

Vultr’s Cloud Compute overview lists a starting example of $0.005 per hour for a configuration with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of storage. That example is not proof of a universal $2.50 monthly price or of availability at the same rate in every data center. Vultr says rates can vary by location and directs customers to its pricing page for current hourly and monthly rates. Verify the selected configuration and region there before estimating recurring spend.

The listed hourly starting example should not be multiplied into a promised monthly bill without checking the live plan terms and the applicable billing ceiling. Vultr’s published pricing information does not establish a current full price table by region, so a precise 2026 monthly total cannot be stated here.

Costs that can add to the instance rate

  • Bandwidth overage: Vultr lists overage at $0.01 per GB beyond the plan’s bandwidth allocation. Check the allocation for the specific plan. Vultr Docs: Bandwidth Overages
  • Windows licensing: Windows is an additional fee based on the selected compute plan rather than an included part of the base instance price. Confirm the fee for the plan you intend to use. Vultr Docs: Windows Server Licensing

Cloud Compute plan categories

Vultr describes Cloud Compute as shared-CPU virtual machines, with configurable vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth. Its three categories differ in processor and storage characteristics:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Vultr’s published description Potential fit
Cloud Compute Previous-generation Intel CPUs and regular SSD storage Bursty workloads such as low-traffic sites, blogs, CMS deployments, development and test environments, and small databases
High Frequency Higher-clock-speed CPUs and NVMe storage Workloads where those processor and storage characteristics suit the application
High Performance Newer-generation Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC CPUs and NVMe storage Workloads that fit the available configuration and benefit from the published hardware characteristics

These are category descriptions, not independent benchmark results. The available evidence does not establish how much faster one category is for a particular application.

Vultr Docs: Choosing a Cloud Compute instance

Which plan should you choose?

Start with the workload rather than the lowest advertised rate. Compare the exact plan’s vCPU count, memory, storage, bandwidth allocation, data-center location, and total cost. A small site or test environment may need fewer resources than a production application; a database or CPU- and storage-sensitive workload may call for a different configuration. Estimate the cost for the time the instance will remain provisioned, including time spent stopped, then account for possible bandwidth overage and Windows licensing.

  • For a low-traffic website or development server: Cloud Compute is described for these bursty use cases; size the memory and storage to the application.
  • For higher clock speeds or NVMe storage: consider whether High Frequency’s published characteristics match the workload.
  • For newer-generation Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe: review High Performance configurations, while checking their actual regional price and resource allocation.

Verdict

Vultr Cloud Compute is a configurable shared-CPU option for websites, applications, test environments, and small databases. Its billing mechanics deserve particular attention: charges accrue hourly, a stopped instance remains billable, and destroying it is required to stop the charges. The $0.005-per-hour configuration is a documented starting example, not a guarantee that the title’s $2.50-per-month figure applies to every region or plan. Confirm the live configuration price and include likely extras before committing.
