Choose Vultr if you want a remotely administered host and have confirmed that the selected instance can handle your encoder workload and its transfer allowance covers continuous streaming. Vultr’s low entry price is not proof that its smallest instance can encode your stream. If you want to keep uploaded videos live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is another option: it runs the loop from the cloud.
How the three options differ
A 24/7 YouTube channel needs a video source, an encoder or playback workflow, an internet connection to YouTube, and someone or something able to respond when a problem occurs. Moving the host from your home to a cloud instance changes where the work runs; it does not automatically solve encoding, bandwidth, or monitoring.

| Option | Where it runs | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home PC | Your own computer and home connection | A workflow using locally connected cameras, capture devices, or other audio/video equipment; or an existing PC that you can leave operating. | Power, sustained upload, internet interruptions, and local hardware remain part of the streaming chain. |
| Vultr Cloud Compute | A rented virtual machine in a Vultr data centre | A remotely administered encoder host when the selected instance has adequate capacity for the actual workload. | Plan price, transfer quota, possible overage, operating-system licensing, and remote administration all matter. The reviewed sources do not benchmark YouTube encoding on Vultr plans. |
| StreamNeo | StreamNeo’s cloud service | Playing uploaded videos or a playlist as a continuous YouTube Live stream without keeping a home computer on. | Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-live service. |
When a home PC makes more sense
You use equipment that is already at home
YouTube describes encoder workflows that can share a screen or gameplay and connect external audio/video hardware. If your production depends on devices attached to your computer, running the encoder locally can be the simpler route. A cloud VM is remote; access to local cameras, capture cards, and peripherals can complicate a workflow, though the sources cited here do not test particular remote-capture setups.
You already have a computer and can manage its operating conditions
An existing computer may be adequate, but the evidence here does not establish a minimum home-PC build. Account for continuous operation: the machine must stay powered, avoid sleep or forced restarts during the stream, and have a stable wired or wireless connection. Test with the same content, audio, and motion you plan to broadcast, then preview the stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a setup is ready.

Your actual upload connection is stable enough
Download speed alone does not answer whether a home PC can sustain a live stream. YouTube says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth, recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. Test sustained upload under typical household conditions and check your ISP’s terms before committing to a continuous schedule. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
When Vultr Cloud Compute makes more sense
You want a remote host rather than a computer running at home
A cloud instance can be administered remotely. Vultr documents SSH or its Console for Linux instances, and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for Windows instances. Remote access is useful for administration, but it does not remove the need to install and configure an encoder, make sure the workload fits the instance, or respond if YouTube or the stream process fails. See the Vultr Cloud Compute FAQ.
Do not treat the entry plan as an encoder recommendation
As listed on Vultr’s pricing page accessed October 3, 2026, its entry Cloud Compute configuration is $2.50 per month for 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB memory, 10 GB storage, and 0.50 TB of listed bandwidth. Another listed example is $5 per month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB memory, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB bandwidth. These are plan and price-page details, not performance tests. The sources do not show whether either can encode a particular video at a particular resolution or frame rate. Do not choose by vCPU count alone; verify the software’s requirements and test the actual workload before relying on it for a continuous stream. Higher configurations cost more.

Vultr says location can affect pricing, Windows licensing costs extra, and its pricing page lists bandwidth overage at $0.01 per GB. Confirm the current price and billing details for the data-centre location and instance you plan to use at Vultr’s pricing page.
Account for continuous outbound transfer
Use the actual outgoing bitrate and runtime to estimate transfer before buying a plan. At a constant 14 Mbps, a stream sends about 151.2 GB per 24 hours, or about 4.54 TB over 30 days, using decimal units and excluding protocol overhead. At 17 Mbps, the corresponding estimates are about 183.6 GB per day and 5.51 TB over 30 days. These are arithmetic estimates, not Vultr billing measurements; compare them with the selected plan’s included transfer and verify its current quota and overage rules. A 24/7 stream can use substantially more than an entry plan’s listed allowance.
Set a YouTube stream bitrate and encoder workflow
Choose settings for the stream you will actually send
YouTube’s current English encoder-settings guidance lists recommended H.264 ingest bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommended ingest settings, not required home internet speeds; leave the separately recommended 20% upload headroom. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 among video codec choices. Confirm settings against the current YouTube page and your encoder, since the published guidance has displayed differing bitrate values across locale or rendering versions. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Use the recommended transport and rate controls
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Network allowance: Ensure sustained upload capacity exceeds the total stream bitrate, with YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation.
Test before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended
- Configure the encoder for the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval you intend to use.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio, rather than a static or silent sample that hides problems in the real program.
- Preview the broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health before treating the setup as ready.
- Decide who will notice a failed stream and how they will respond. Neither a home PC nor a cloud VM removes that operational responsibility.
YouTube’s encoder overview explains the workflow for screen sharing and external audio/video hardware: YouTube Help: encoder workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare the full cost, not just the host price
Vultr’s monthly plan charge is only one part of its cost. Include any Windows license, transfer overage, storage or backup add-ons you choose, and location-dependent pricing. Compare that total with your own home-PC costs: purchase or replacement if needed, electricity, internet service, and any backup equipment. Electricity prices and household ISP costs vary by location and are not established here, so there is no universal winner on cost.
For a home PC, a computer you already own may make the marginal hardware cost low, but you still depend on household power and connectivity. For Vultr, a low advertised plan may not suit the encoding workload or provide enough included transfer for a continuous stream. Price both setups against the bitrate and schedule you will actually use.

Reliability: identify the failure you still have to manage
A home setup can be interrupted by local power, PC, router, or ISP problems. YouTube specifically warns that network disruption can break a stream. A cloud instance avoids relying on the home computer’s power and internet for the encoder host, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast or eliminate host, software, network, and platform failures.
Vultr’s SLA concerns infrastructure within Vultr’s control; it is not a guarantee of end-to-end YouTube availability. The SLA excludes GPU instances and requires customers to request outage credits through its process. Read the Vultr SLA for its scope and terms. In either setup, someone needs to notice and respond to a failed stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel’s 24/7 schedule is based on uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is the #1 option to try first: it keeps an always-on YouTube stream running from the cloud, plays your uploads at the quality you made them up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives you the first day free.
