The right firewall rules depend on your setup: a computer that encodes video and sends it directly to YouTube generally needs an outbound connection, not a public RTMP port on the Vultr host. This guide uses Ubuntu with UFW for its command examples; other operating systems need their own firewall tools and rules.
First identify what the Vultr server does
There is no universal port list for a “YouTube streaming server.” Before changing firewall rules, establish the operating system, what software runs on the instance, and which machine encodes the video. Vultr’s guide to OBS on Ubuntu is one deployment example, not a requirement that every YouTube stream be encoded on a server (Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu guide).

- Local encoder, direct to YouTube: OBS or another encoder runs on your computer and connects outbound to YouTube. The Vultr instance may have no role in the video path. Do not open an inbound RTMP port on it just because you are streaming.
- Encoder on the Vultr instance: The server runs encoding software and sends the stream outbound to YouTube. You still need inbound SSH for administration, but do not expose an RTMP listener unless the software and design actually require one.
- Relay or ingest server: A service on the instance receives a feed and forwards it. Determine the exact listener port, who needs to connect, and whether access can be restricted before adding a firewall exception. The necessary ports depend on the relay software and topology.
- Control panel or website: Allow web ports only if the instance serves HTTP or HTTPS and those services should be publicly reachable.
Keep the network directions straight: SSH is inbound access to administer the Vultr host; YouTube RTMPS is generally an outbound connection from the encoder to YouTube. YouTube’s setup instructions do not establish a need for an inbound RTMP listener on your instance.
Set up SSH keys without risking an existing instance
An SSH key pair has a private key that stays with you and a public key that can be installed on the server. Never share or publish the private key. Vultr documents generating a key on the workstation, adding the public key during deployment, and connecting with the selected private key in its SSH connection guide.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Important for an already-running server: Vultr warns that applying an SSH key through the console after deployment reinstalls the instance and can wipe its data. Do not treat that action as a harmless way to add a key to a live server. If you need to change access on an existing instance, first follow Vultr’s documented recovery or reinstallation process and protect any data you need.
Connect with the private key
From a terminal on the machine holding the private key, use the username and address appropriate to your image and instance:
ssh -i /path/to/private_key username@SERVER_IP
Replace /path/to/private_key, username, and SERVER_IP with your actual values. Keep the private key in a protected location and do not paste it into a public configuration file, support post, or screenshot. Verify that key-based access works before tightening SSH firewall access.

Apply a least-exposure firewall on Ubuntu with UFW
These commands are for Ubuntu using UFW, not a universal Vultr procedure. Vultr’s firewall quickstart describes different tools on different operating systems, including firewalld, IPFW, pf, nftables, and Windows Firewall (Vultr firewall quickstart). Use the firewall appropriate to your installed OS.
Before changing remote-access rules, keep your current SSH session open and have Vultr console or another recovery route ready. A restrictive rule can cut off the connection you are using. Vultr’s troubleshooting guidance describes using console recovery when firewall rules interrupt SSH access (Vultr UFW troubleshooting).
- Inspect the current state and rules:
sudo ufw status verbose - Allow the SSH port you actually use before enabling UFW. If SSH is on the default port, use:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcpIf SSH uses a different port, allow that port instead. Do not assume port 22 if you have changed the daemon configuration.
- Set the baseline policy:
sudo ufw default deny incoming sudo ufw default allow outgoingThis blocks unsolicited inbound connections by default while allowing the server to initiate outbound connections.
- Add only necessary service exceptions. For example, allow web traffic only if this host serves it. Add any relay or ingest port only after confirming the service and who must reach it. Do not open a port to make YouTube’s outbound RTMPS connection work.
- Enable UFW only after reviewing the rules:
sudo ufw enable sudo ufw status verboseConfirm the expected SSH allowance and service exceptions appear. Test a new SSH connection from a second terminal before closing the original session.
If you are applying an existing ruleset rather than starting fresh, adapt the order to those rules and the access path you have. Preserve console recovery access while testing restrictive changes.

Limit SSH to trusted addresses when practical
Allowing SSH from anywhere is convenient when you administer the server from different networks. Restricting it to a known public IP reduces exposure, but only works reliably if that address is stable and your workflow permits the restriction. Vultr’s Ubuntu UFW guide recommends limiting SSH to trusted IPs (Vultr UFW guide).
For example, replace TRUSTED_IP with the administrator’s public IPv4 address and use the actual SSH port:
sudo ufw allow from TRUSTED_IP to any port 22 proto tcp
Check that the specific rule is correct and test a second connection before removing a broader SSH allowance. A changing home address, mobile connection, or travel can leave you outside the allowlist; ensure console recovery is available first.

Changing the SSH port is not a substitute for access controls
A non-default SSH port may reduce automated connection attempts, but it does not replace key authentication, updates, trusted-source restrictions, or a deny-by-default firewall. Vultr’s production SSH guidance treats a port change as only one hardening measure (Vultr SSH production practices).
If you change the port, allow the new one in the firewall before restarting the SSH service. Test a fresh connection using the new port while the old session remains open; remove the old firewall allowance only after the new connection succeeds.

The encoder normally initiates this connection outbound. If SSL connection troubleshooting requires it, YouTube says port 443 can be specified. That is an outbound connection setting, not a reason to open inbound port 443 on the Vultr host unless that host separately serves HTTPS.
Keep the YouTube stream key private
YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: avoid exposing it in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs. YouTube explains stream key management and resetting in Manage live stream settings. If you suspect exposure, reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new one.
Test the stream and troubleshoot access safely
Firewall hardening cannot guarantee stream quality. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, testing before the event, and monitoring stream health; quality also depends on encoder settings and available upload capacity (YouTube encoder settings).

- SSH times out after a firewall change: Use the Vultr console or other recovery route, inspect UFW status, and restore the SSH rule for the port you use. Do not close the working session until a separate connection succeeds.
- Key-based SSH authentication fails: Confirm you are selecting the correct private key and username, and that the matching public key was installed. Do not expose the private key while troubleshooting.
- Encoder cannot connect to YouTube: Check that it is using the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that outbound connectivity is available, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s port 443 troubleshooting guidance if applicable.
- YouTube reports a stream problem or quality is unstable: Check encoder configuration, available upload capacity, and stream health. An inbound firewall rule on the Vultr host will not fix an outbound encoder-to-YouTube issue.
- Relay clients cannot connect: Verify the relay service is running and listening on the intended interface and port, then permit only the required inbound traffic. Avoid opening a broad port range without a topology-specific reason.
Or let it run in the cloud
