What Vultr can—and cannot—tell you about 24/7 streaming
Vultr’s documentation covers both a managed Broadcaster Marketplace app and a do-it-yourself Ubuntu setup for streaming to YouTube. They are distinct deployment paths, not two configurations of the same Cloud Compute plan. The Marketplace instructions specify an A16 GPU instance; the self-managed guide gives general VM resource recommendations.

Neither guide establishes an uptime guarantee for a continuous broadcast, nor do the sources independently benchmark stream quality, latency or reliability. Treat the configuration and bitrate figures below as Vultr’s published guidance, not tested performance results. A cloud VM can remove the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not remove the need to configure, monitor and maintain the stream.

What to budget for the self-managed route
Start with Vultr’s suggested server baseline
Vultr’s 1 April 2025 OBS guide recommends an Ubuntu server with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, 80 GB of storage and 3 TB of bandwidth. Use this as a planning baseline for the documented workflow, not as evidence that every codec, scene, resolution or continuous stream will run reliably on that configuration. Resource needs can vary with the encoding workload.

Estimate outbound transfer from bitrate and time
A stream sends data continuously. Higher bitrate and more time live mean more outbound transfer, so a 24/7 schedule magnifies bandwidth use even if the bitrate is modest. Vultr’s guide gives these example OBS bitrate ranges by output resolution and frame rate:

These are ranges published by Vultr in its 2025 guide, not independent recommendations or measurements. Before deploying, check the bandwidth allowance and overage terms for the exact plan and region you intend to use. Vultr’s bandwidth dashboard can show transfer usage and overage fees; the available evidence does not establish a current allowance or full monthly bill for a particular streaming plan. The Cloud Compute overview displayed a starting price of $0.005 per hour at retrieval for a 1-vCPU, 0.5-GB RAM, 10-GB storage configuration—substantially different from the OBS guide’s suggested baseline, and not a useful estimate of the streaming setup’s cost. Set up the self-managed Ubuntu stream
Vultr’s guide describes installing OBS Studio and FFmpeg on Ubuntu, configuring OBS to send a stream to YouTube, then starting and monitoring the broadcast. Follow the guide for installation commands and version-specific details; the core operational sequence is:
- Provision the VM: Choose Ubuntu and a configuration at or above the guide’s suggested 2-vCPU, 4-GB RAM, 80-GB storage and 3-TB bandwidth baseline. Confirm region, included transfer and overage terms before you create it.
- Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg: Use the package and installation steps in Vultr’s Ubuntu guide. Keep the system and streaming software maintained rather than treating the initial install as a set-and-forget appliance.
- Configure the YouTube output: In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming destination and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Set the output resolution, frame rate and bitrate deliberately, using Vultr’s published bitrate ranges as planning examples.
- Set recovery behavior: Vultr recommends an automatic reconnect delay of 3 seconds or less and at least 1,000 maximum retries. These settings can help OBS attempt to reconnect after an interruption; they do not guarantee that a stream will recover or stay online.
- Start with a test: Confirm YouTube receives the stream and that the picture and audio are correct before relying on a continuous broadcast. For a file-based loop, ensure the source media is available to the server and that the OBS scene or playback workflow is configured to repeat it.
- Monitor the live process: Watch OBS CPU usage and bandwidth consumption. Vultr warns that CPU utilization above 90% may cause dropped frames and buffering; that is its operational warning, not an independent test result. If CPU use is high, reduce output demands or move to a more suitable instance.
Set up Vultr Broadcaster from the Marketplace
Vultr’s Broadcaster instructions use a separate One Click Vultr Broadcaster A16 GPU instance. The documented path is browser-accessible OBS with GPU integration, not the general-purpose Ubuntu baseline above.

- Configure the broadcast: Set the output resolution and frame rate in the broadcaster, add YouTube as the destination and provide the channel’s stream key.
- Transfer source video for continuous playback: Vultr explicitly advises uploading source files for a 24/7 stream. Its guide shows SFTP and also mentions FTP, SCP and Rsync as transfer methods.
- Test before relying on it: Start a test stream and confirm the YouTube feed and playback behavior. The guide describes setup steps, not a measured uptime result for continuous operation.
Reliability: plan for operation, not just deployment
A VM running in a data center avoids dependence on a home PC remaining powered and connected, but continuous operation still has failure points: the encoding process can stall, the instance can run short of CPU, the source file can become unavailable, or the connection to YouTube can drop. OBS reconnect settings provide retry behavior, not an availability guarantee. Vultr’s guides do not establish an SLA for the described streaming setup, a predictable latency, or independent evidence that a particular instance will stay live indefinitely.
- Check the OBS process and CPU load, especially when using demanding output settings.
- Track outgoing transfer in Vultr’s dashboard and compare it with the selected plan’s limit.
- Keep source files on the server for file-based streaming and verify they remain accessible.
- Test the YouTube output and playback loop before leaving it unattended.
