How to Maximize a Browser Window in Selenium Ruby

Maximize Selenium Ruby’s current browser window with driver.manage.window.maximize, and learn when explicit resizing or fullscreen is a better fit.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To maximize the current browser window in Selenium Ruby, call driver.manage.window.maximize after creating the WebDriver instance.

Maximize the current browser window

Use this runnable Ruby example as a starting point:

require 'selenium-webdriver'

driver = Selenium::WebDriver.for :chrome
driver.manage.window.maximize

# Continue with browser automation...

driver.quit

The maximize call acts on the current WebDriver window. Selenium says that on most operating systems the window fills the screen while leaving the operating system’s menus and toolbars visible. The exact resulting geometry can depend on the operating system and its window manager. Selenium’s window and tab documentation and the Selenium Ruby Bindings guide document the Ruby call.

Choose maximize, resize, or fullscreen

Goal Ruby operation What to expect
Use the largest available window area driver.manage.window.maximize Enlarges the current window; normal operating-system menus and toolbars generally remain visible.
Request particular dimensions driver.manage.window.resize_to(1024, 768) Requests an outer-window size. The page’s rendered viewport may differ from those dimensions.
Show a fullscreen view driver.manage.window.fullscreen Enters a mode similar to pressing F11 in most browsers.

Use maximize when the test should occupy the largest area offered by its environment. Use resize_to when you need a chosen size, and fullscreen when you want an F11-like presentation. These operations do not guarantee identical page viewport dimensions across environments; verify the resulting dimensions where the test runs.
