It aims to reduce baseline bundle size and improve performance, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every component: Vapor does not support the Options API or features that rely on VNodes or the component public instance proxy.
Release status is important: as of October 7, 2026, Vue’s release list showed v3.6.0-rc.10 as a pre-release and v3.5.43 as the latest stable release. Vue 3.6 was not yet stable on that date.

What Vapor Mode changes
Vue’s conventional rendering path uses the Virtual DOM. Vapor is an alternative compilation strategy for SFCs: components explicitly marked for Vapor are compiled to use that mode rather than silently changing the rendering of an entire Vue application.

The original public outline described Vapor as an opt-in approach for performance-sensitive use cases and envisioned Vapor subtrees inside existing Vue 3 apps. It also described removing the Virtual DOM runtime from an all-Vapor app as a design goal. That 2022 direction is historical context; current behavior and adoption decisions should follow the Vue 3.6 release notes and documentation. How to opt a component in
The documented SFC syntax adds the vapor attribute to the script block:
<script setup vapor>
// component logic
</script>
<template>
<!-- component template -->
</template>
The release notes also document <script vapor> as shorthand for <script setup vapor>, and list template-only SFCs as supported. The opt-in is component-level; ordinary components are not automatically converted simply because an app uses Vue 3.6.
Check compatibility with the exact Vue release candidate and the build and language tools used by your project. The reviewed release material does not provide an exhaustive compatibility matrix for every ecosystem package.
What Vapor does not support
Vapor components have specific compatibility boundaries. The release notes state that the Options API is not supported and identify features dependent on VNodes or the component public instance proxy as unavailable. Consequently, “mostly identical” API behavior should not be read as a promise that all existing components and libraries will work unchanged.
- Options API: components using it cannot be treated as supported Vapor components.
- VNode-dependent patterns: code that requires VNodes falls outside the stated support boundary.
- Public instance proxy: features that depend on that proxy are unavailable in Vapor mode.
These limits make a component and dependency audit more useful than assuming a whole Vue codebase can switch modes without changes.

Vue 3.6 release status and stability
On October 7, 2026, Vue core’s release list marked v3.6.0-rc.10, released September 30, as a pre-release. The latest stable entry shown was v3.5.43, released September 17. These dates describe the release list on that day, not a forecast of when Vue 3.6 would become stable. Vue core releases
The Vue 3.6 RC announcement said the release was entering the RC phase after the intended Vapor feature set was complete. Feature-complete describes the scope of that milestone; it does not make an RC stable. Vue’s release policy says alpha, beta, and RC versions are unstable, intended for integration and stability testing and feedback, and should not be used in production. It also advises pinning exact versions when using pre-releases. Vue has no fixed release cycle; minor releases typically arrive three to six months apart and go through a beta phase. How to evaluate Vapor in an existing app
- Choose a suitable candidate. Start with a performance-sensitive component or page rather than migrating the application wholesale.
- Check its dependencies and APIs. Look for Options API usage and patterns or libraries that rely on VNodes or the component public instance proxy.
- Pin the exact release candidate. Use an exact version for an evaluation, as Vue recommends for pre-releases, and verify the build and language-tool setup against that version.
- Compare equivalent work. Measure bundle contribution and runtime behavior for the same representative workload using the existing rendering path and the Vapor version.
- Keep a rollback boundary. Make the change small enough that you can return to the conventional component path if compatibility or measured results do not justify it.
This process tests whether Vapor helps a particular application; it does not presume a performance win. The release note refers qualitatively to third-party benchmarks but does not identify a publisher, method, or numeric result that can support a general percentage claim.
Vapor and the standalone repository
Vapor is now developed in Vue core rather than as a separately maintained general-purpose framework. The standalone Vue Vapor repository says it is no longer maintained and points development to Vue core’s Vapor branch. Standalone Vue Vapor repository
