Wi‑Fi is a way for devices to connect wirelessly to local network equipment; it is not the internet service itself.
Internet and Wi‑Fi do different jobs
Internet service connects your home network to online destinations. Wi‑Fi is a wireless local networking method that lets nearby devices connect to a router or access point. The Federal Trade Commission describes a home Wi‑Fi network as a wireless connection that usually involves a router sending a signal through the air (FTC guidance on securing home Wi‑Fi).

Think of internet service as the connection coming from your provider, and Wi‑Fi as one way your devices reach the equipment that shares that connection. A modem or equivalent equipment handles the incoming service and provides a connection—often Ethernet—for a router. Google explains the modem’s role in connecting an incoming service to a Wi‑Fi router (Google Home Help: What is a modem?).
The equipment may be a separate modem and router, a standalone access point, or a combined gateway. The exact arrangement varies, but a router alone does not create an internet subscription: it needs an upstream connection.

Ways to get online without joining Wi‑Fi
| Connection method | How the device connects | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | Wirelessly to a router or access point on a local network | Local signal quality and an upstream connection for internet access |
| Ethernet | With a network cable to appropriate router, gateway, or network equipment | A working local network connection and upstream internet service |
| Mobile data or hotspot | Directly over a phone’s cellular connection, or through a phone hotspot shared with another device | Cellular coverage and a mobile plan that supports the connection |
Ethernet avoids relying on a device’s Wi‑Fi link, but it does not bypass the need for internet service if you want to reach online websites and apps. A phone can also access the internet over mobile data; a hotspot shares that cellular connection with other devices. These alternatives are described in AT&T’s internet-versus-Wi‑Fi explainer.
How to tell whether the problem is Wi‑Fi or internet service
A Wi‑Fi problem affects the wireless link between a device and local network equipment. A broadband problem affects the connection from that equipment to the provider or beyond. Symptoms offer clues, not certainty: outages, equipment faults, and device-specific issues can make the distinction less clear.

- One room or one wireless device has trouble: Check its distance from the router, signal strength, router placement, and possible interference. Ofcom notes that placement and nearby electrical devices can affect Wi‑Fi performance (Ofcom’s Wi‑Fi guidance).
- Several devices have trouble: Check whether they are all using the same Wi‑Fi network, then look at the modem or gateway’s connection status. A shared issue may involve the wireless network, equipment, or provider connection.
- A wired device also cannot reach online services: Because Ethernet does not depend on the device’s Wi‑Fi link, this points away from a Wi‑Fi-only fault. Check the upstream connection and equipment status; it does not by itself prove the provider is at fault.
Ofcom identifies both Wi‑Fi difficulties and broadband service problems as possible causes of connection issues. A wired test can help separate them, but it is a diagnostic clue rather than a guarantee.
Do you need a Wi‑Fi router?
You need a Wi‑Fi router or access point only if you want devices to connect wirelessly to your local network. If you use Ethernet for every device, Wi‑Fi is optional. A router can distribute a connection around your home, but it cannot replace the internet service or guarantee compatibility with every provider; equipment requirements depend on the service and provider.
