If Intel VT-x is disabled, virtual machines and some virtualization-based features may not be able to use your processor’s hardware support. That does not, by itself, show that ordinary Windows apps are running more slowly: the available official guidance does not establish a general speed penalty or a performance gain from turning VT-x on.
What VT-x does—and what it does not prove
Intel VT-x is processor technology that lets virtualization software use hardware extensions to run virtualized environments. For that use, processor capability is only part of the picture: the system firmware must also support and enable virtualization. Intel explains the distinction in its guides to why Intel virtualization can show as disabled even when supported and running Intel virtualization on a new motherboard.

The title’s performance claim needs a qualification. Microsoft and Intel’s cited guidance describes virtualization availability, not a general slowdown in everyday Windows use when VT-x is off. It provides no benchmark or typical speed gain for enabling it. Turn it on when an application or feature needs virtualization, rather than expecting it to make ordinary programs faster.

Check the three layers behind a virtualization error
If Windows or an app reports that virtualization is unavailable, check these separately instead of assuming the processor is the problem:

- CONNECTIVITY - Network hardware includes a full-speed Wi-Fi 7 module with Bluetooth 5.4 & 5Gbps LAN; Rear ports include USB 20G Type-C and 7.1 USB High Performance Audio with Audio Boost 5 (supports S/PDIF output)
- Processor support: The CPU must support Intel virtualization technology. Intel’s guide explains how to check whether a processor supports it: Does my processor support Intel virtualization technology?
- Firmware support and setting: The system’s BIOS/UEFI must support the feature, and the setting may need to be enabled. A supported processor alone does not guarantee it is active.
- Windows features and software use: Firmware virtualization is distinct from Windows optional features. Microsoft notes that Virtual Machine Platform may be needed in some use or upgrade scenarios. Also, another hypervisor or virtualization component may already be using the hardware extensions; Intel says only one software component can use them at a time.
Many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled, according to Microsoft. If your app works and Windows reports no issue, there may be nothing to change.
How to enable virtualization in UEFI or BIOS
Menu names and locations differ among manufacturers and models, so use the device maker’s instructions rather than a universal menu path. Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 route to firmware settings is:
Rank #2
- AMD Socket AM4: Ready to support AMD Ryzen 5000 / Ryzen 4000 / Ryzen 3000 Series processors
- Enhanced Power Solution: Digital twin 10 plus3 phases VRM solution with premium chokes and capacitors for steady power delivery.
- Advanced Thermal Armor: Enlarged VRM heatsinks layered with 5 W/mk thermal pads for better heat dissipation. Pre-Installed I/O Armor for quicker PC DIY assembly.
- Boost Your Memory Performance: Compatible with DDR4 memory and supports 4 x DIMMs with AMD EXPO Memory Module Support.
- Comprehensive Connectivity: WIFI 6, PCIe 4.0, 2x M.2 Slots, 1GbE LAN, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
- Find your PC manufacturer and model. Keep the model information available so you can locate the correct firmware guidance.
- Open Windows Recovery. In Windows, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, then select Restart now. The exact route can vary by Windows version and device configuration.
- Enter UEFI settings. After restart, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart. If UEFI Settings is absent, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- Locate the virtualization option. In firmware, look for the manufacturer’s setting for Intel virtualization or VT-x. Its label and location vary. Confirm the system and firmware support the feature using the manufacturer’s guidance and Intel’s documentation.
- Enable only the needed setting, save, and restart. Avoid changing unrelated firmware options. Microsoft warns in its Enable Virtualization on Windows guide: “Only change what you need to in the UEFI (or BIOS). Adjusting other settings might prevent you from accessing Windows.”
If virtualization is still unavailable
Verify that the firmware change took effect
Re-enter UEFI and check whether the virtualization option is enabled. If it is missing or cannot be changed, consult the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s documentation; firmware support, menu wording, and access restrictions vary by device.

Check Windows features separately
Some workloads need a Windows component such as Virtual Machine Platform in addition to firmware virtualization. These are separate configuration layers: enabling a Windows feature does not substitute for enabling VT-x in firmware, and enabling VT-x does not automatically install every Windows virtualization feature an application may require. Microsoft lists Virtual Machine Platform in its Windows virtualization guidance.

- Enhanced Power Solution: Digital 3+3 VRM Design and premium chokes and capacitors for steady power delivery.

Consider whether another component is using the extensions
Intel notes that only one software component can use the hardware extensions at a time. If the firmware setting is enabled but an application still reports a conflict, check the application’s requirements and the active Windows virtualization or security components. Do not disable security features as a first troubleshooting step; first identify what is using the extensions and whether the application supports that configuration.

Enabling VT-x makes the processor’s virtualization extensions available to compatible software, assuming the firmware and required Windows components are configured correctly. It is a compatibility and capability change—not a supported general-purpose speed tweak. No specific speed increase can be promised without evidence for the exact PC and workload.
