Microsoft’s Data Wrangler extension lets you inspect and clean supported spreadsheet data, then generate Python code for the changes. That makes VS Code especially useful when you want to explore a dataset or turn a one-off cleanup into a repeatable workflow.
Can I open an Excel file in VS Code?
Yes. Microsoft documents Data Wrangler support for Excel’s .xls and .xlsx formats, as well as .csv, .tsv and .parquet. Microsoft describes Data Wrangler as “a code-centric data viewing and cleaning tool that is integrated into VS Code and VS Code Jupyter Notebooks.” See Microsoft’s Getting Started with Data Wrangler in VS Code.

To load a local spreadsheet, open the folder containing the file in VS Code and use the documented Data Wrangler action to open it. For an Excel workbook, you may specify a sheet where applicable. You can also read data into a Pandas DataFrame in a Jupyter notebook and open that data object in Data Wrangler instead.

What can VS Code do with an Excel spreadsheet?
Data Wrangler presents data in a grid so you can examine its contents, inspect column statistics and visualizations, and apply cleaning or transformation operations. As you work, it generates Pandas code corresponding to those transformations. That code connection is the key difference: you can inspect the steps and reuse them rather than relying only on manual spreadsheet edits.

Microsoft says the tool provides a sandboxed environment for exploring and transforming data. Your original data is not changed until you explicitly export the result. Available outcomes include exporting cleaned data to a new CSV or Parquet file, exporting generated code to a notebook, or copying the code. These options do not amount to editing and saving a fully featured Excel workbook in place.
How to set up a practical Excel-data workflow
- Open the data folder. In VS Code, open the folder containing your local workbook so the file is available in the workspace.
- Open the workbook in Data Wrangler. Use the Data Wrangler action documented by Microsoft and choose the Excel file; select a sheet if the workflow calls for one.
- Inspect before changing. Review the grid, column statistics and visualizations to understand the data and identify the cleanup you need.
- Apply transformations. Use Data Wrangler’s cleaning operations. Check the generated Pandas code to see how the changes are represented.
- Choose an output deliberately. Export the cleaned data as a new CSV or Parquet file, send the generated code to a notebook, or copy the code. The original remains unchanged unless you explicitly export changes.
If you prefer to start in a notebook, load the data into a Pandas DataFrame there and open that object in Data Wrangler. Microsoft’s Python in Visual Studio Code documentation explains that the Python and Jupyter extensions work together to view and modify notebook code cells, run them and debug them.

When Excel is the better tool—and when VS Code helps
This is a task-based distinction, not a formal feature-by-feature comparison. Excel remains the natural choice for spreadsheet-first work: interacting with a workbook as a workbook. VS Code with Data Wrangler, Python and Jupyter is useful when the task is to inspect, clean or analyze tabular data and make transformations repeatable in code. The Data Science profile in VS Code combines Data Wrangler, Jupyter and Python as a starting setup for this kind of work; Microsoft describes profiles in its Profiles in Visual Studio Code documentation.

If the result needs to remain a richly formatted workbook with its spreadsheet-specific structure and interface, the documented Data Wrangler export options do not establish that VS Code can replace Excel for that job. Use the tool that matches the deliverable: workbook interaction in Excel, or code-connected data work in VS Code.

What you need to install and what can go wrong
For notebook-based work, install and configure Python and the Jupyter extension as needed. Microsoft’s Data Wrangler quick start specifies Python 3.8 or higher and says that its first launch checks for a Python kernel and dependencies such as Pandas. Requirements can change as the extension evolves, so consult the current Data Wrangler documentation when setting up.
Direct file loading can fail with a UnicodeDecodeError if a file has a non-UTF-8 encoding or is corrupted. Microsoft’s documented workaround is to read the file through a notebook and specify encoding options when loading it. This notebook route also gives you a way to work with a DataFrame before opening the data in Data Wrangler.

Before installing any extension, review its Marketplace listing rather than treating availability there as a safety guarantee. Microsoft recommends checking details such as the publisher, install count, rating, README, dependencies and setup requirements.
