Choose the workflow that matches what you want to do; the apps, equipment, and network requirements differ.
Choose the right VR streaming workflow
| Your goal | Direction of stream | Typical workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Watch 360° or VR180 video | Online video into the headset | Open a compatible video app, such as YouTube VR on a supported headset. |
| Play a PC VR game on a headset | Game from a PC to the headset | Use Steam Link wirelessly or a supported wired/wireless Meta Horizon Link setup. |
| Show the headset view on a TV, phone, or computer | Headset to another screen | Use the headset’s casting feature or a development tool such as Meta Quest Developer Hub. |
| Livestream gameplay to an audience | Headset to a public platform | Use a headset sharing or broadcast app that supports your device and destination platform. |
Before installing an app or buying hardware, check its current supported-device list. Compatibility is app-specific: a headset that plays one service does not necessarily support another.

How to watch 360° video in a VR headset
Use YouTube VR
YouTube VR lists Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, PICO 4, and Apple Vision Pro as supported devices. Its Quest app lets viewers switch between immersive and panel viewing and filter results for 360°, VR180, 4K, 3D, and captions. YouTube says the app supports 8K resolution on Quest 3; it also describes up to 4K for purchased movies on Meta Quest. These options depend on the device and video, so check the quality choices shown for the specific title in the app. See YouTube’s current YouTube VR device and setup guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.
Use another compatible video app or browser
A headset can display ordinary flat video on a virtual theater screen. That is not the same as immersive 360° video: a 360° or stereoscopic file fills the viewer’s field of view only when both the video format and playback app support it. Steam separately documents a Steam 360 Video tool for immersive playback on SteamVR-compatible headsets. Check the app’s supported formats and headset list before choosing or downloading a video; a file labeled “3D” or “360” is not by itself a guarantee of compatibility. See Steam Support’s guidance on streaming videos on Steam.

How to stream PC VR games to a headset
Steam Link: wireless PCVR
Steam Link sends games from a Windows PC running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets. This is for PC VR gameplay; it is not a general way to watch every online 360° video inside a headset. Steam’s minimum requirements include Windows 10 or newer, a supported PC GPU, a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network using at least Wi-Fi 5, and a supported headset. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. These are Steam’s stated requirements, not a guarantee of identical performance on every home network.
- On the PC, sign in to Steam and make sure SteamVR is installed and available.
- Connect the PC and headset to the same local network. For wireless PCVR, confirm the router uses a 5 GHz channel and meets Steam’s Wi-Fi 5 minimum; consider Steam’s Wi-Fi 6 or 6E recommendation if your current setup is not meeting your needs.
- Install Steam Link in the headset from its supported app store.
- Open Steam Link and follow its on-screen connection prompts to pair with the PC and start a game.
See Steam Support’s Steam Link requirements and setup for Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets, accessed October 3, 2026. Check the page for the current headset and PC compatibility list before troubleshooting or buying a router.

Meta Horizon Link: a separate PC-connected workflow
Meta documents a PC-connected setup for its VR devices using Meta Horizon Link on Windows over USB or Wi-Fi. For the specified cable setup, Meta calls for a USB-C data cable rated for 5 GB/s or higher. This is workflow-specific guidance: it does not mean every Quest video-watching or casting task requires a cable. See Meta’s Hardware Setup documentation, updated September 10, 2026.
How to cast a headset view to a TV or computer
Casting sends what the headset wearer sees to another screen; it is not the same as playing a video immersively in the headset or broadcasting to a public audience. Meta describes casting to a phone, tablet, TV, or browser in real time. The exact destinations and steps can depend on the headset and available casting options. See Meta’s sharing documentation, updated April 6, 2026.
Cast to a desktop with Meta Quest Developer Hub
Meta Quest Developer Hub (MQDH) is a developer tool, not the only consumer casting option. Meta’s debugging documentation describes casting to a desktop; for wireless casting, the headset and desktop should share Wi-Fi and ADB over Wi-Fi must be enabled in Device Manager. MQDH provides bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate controls and can record video to headset storage. Meta’s documented recording flow does not yet support microphone audio, so do not assume it will capture the streamer’s voice.

How to livestream Quest gameplay to an audience
Livestreaming broadcasts the headset experience to a platform for viewers; it is different from casting privately to a nearby screen. Meta’s sharing overview identifies livestreaming as a device-sharing capability. BeamXR Live is one example in a Meta developer story: it describes broadcasting Quest VR or mixed-reality experiences to Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms, with overlays, live chat, and clipping. Check the current app listing and destination-platform support before relying on a specific feature; the story does not establish that BeamXR is the only available option.
Meta’s story quotes BeamXR’s lead developer describing improved quality and performance after the team moved from software to hardware encoding. That is the team’s account in a vendor case study, not an independent benchmark or a performance guarantee for other headsets or users. See Meta’s BeamXR developer story, accessed October 3, 2026.

What affects VR video quality and comfort?
Network, device, and content all matter
Wireless PCVR depends on the whole path from PC to router to headset, not just the broadband speed advertised by your internet provider. Steam specifies 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum for Steam Link and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. For online immersive video, the headset decoder, app, video encoding, selected quality, and network conditions also affect playback.
Read Meta’s media figures as developer guidance
Meta Horizon OS Developers’ media requirements, updated August 28, 2026, recommend adaptive bitrate profiles and give a minimum threshold of 4 Mbps for rectilinear 2D content. For immersive media, Meta recommends 48–60 frames per second and describes 30–60 pixels per degree as a target range, constrained by the device’s decoder and display. Meta says AV1 works on Quest 3 and above only. These are recommendations for developers building apps on Meta devices, not a promise that any consumer stream will work at 4 Mbps or achieve a particular visual result. See Meta’s media requirements and guidelines.
Latency and comfort
Meta cautions that streaming performance and latency vary with the user’s environment. Its developer guidance emphasizes handling poor connectivity so an experience does not freeze or judder or undermine consistent positional tracking. If a game feels unstable, reduce network congestion or use a supported wired workflow where appropriate rather than assuming a higher video resolution alone will fix it. See Meta’s streaming quality guidance.

Quest app policy considerations for streamed content
Meta’s Quest streaming policy applies to covered apps, not to all consumer VR streaming services. It requires notices about streamed content and connectivity for apps that stream immersive content from virtual devices or cloud sources; the policy says those sources are not allowed for covered apps unless expressly approved in writing. Developers should review the current requirements for their app category rather than treating this as a blanket prohibition on watching online video or using consumer casting features. See Meta’s policies for VRC.Quest.Streaming.1, VRC.Quest.Streaming.2, and VRC.Quest.Streaming.3, updated July 31, 2024.
Common VR streaming problems and fixes
- The video appears on a theater screen instead of surrounding you: You may be watching flat video or using a panel mode. Select immersive mode when available, and confirm the title is actually 360° or VR180 and the app supports that format.
- The 360° or 3D video looks wrong: Check whether the app supports the file’s projection and stereoscopic layout, such as side-by-side or over-under. A “3D” label alone does not identify the format the player needs.
- Steam Link cannot find or connect to the PC: Confirm Steam and SteamVR are running on the Windows PC, the PC and headset share the same local network, the headset is supported, and wireless networking meets Steam’s stated 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 minimum.
- Wireless PCVR stutters or feels delayed: Check the full PC-router-headset connection and local network conditions. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E; Meta also warns that performance and latency vary by environment. Try reducing competing network traffic or use a supported wired PC connection.
- MQDH wireless casting does not start: Confirm the desktop and headset share Wi-Fi and ADB over Wi-Fi is enabled in Device Manager. Check the selected bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate controls if the cast is unstable.
- A recording has no voice audio: MQDH’s documented recording flow does not support microphone audio. Use a capture workflow whose current documentation explicitly supports the audio you need.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different job—keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded recordings—StreamNeo is a cloud service, not a VR headset streaming or casting app. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly costs $9.99 per month.
