A spare PC is often the sensible choice if you already own a capable machine, can measure and afford its electricity use, and have a stable home connection. A VPS is a better fit when you want the encoder off your home power and internet path and can budget for both compute and sustained outbound data. Neither guarantees an uninterrupted stream: the right choice depends on tested encoding performance, actual costs, and how you will recover from interruptions.
What YouTube requires—and what it does not
YouTube evaluates the feed your encoder delivers; it does not require the encoder to run on a particular kind of host. Whether the encoder is on a local PC or a VPS, choose an ingestion protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval that the encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describes it as a secure extension of RTMP, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Recommended H.264 bitrates
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 bitrates. They are recommendations for the applicable ingestion settings, not guarantees of quality or required minimum upload speeds.

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder-settings guidance, retrieved October 3, 2026: YouTube Live encoder settings. Your upload path needs to carry the selected bitrate reliably. Leave headroom for connection variation and other traffic, but determine what is adequate by testing rather than relying on a universal multiplier.

Test the whole stream before choosing a host
A speed-test result alone does not establish that a 24/7 stream will remain healthy. YouTube advises creators to choose a quality that suits their connection and test before going live. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health and read any messages shown during the event. The same checks apply whether the encoder is in your home or in a data center.
- Confirm the encoder can sustain the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with the actual video and audio.
- Check the upload path from the host that will run the encoder—not a different device or network.
- Watch the stream-health indicators during a test and address warnings before relying on the stream continuously.
- Verify that your restart and reconnect approach works after an encoder interruption; do not assume the host alone will recover the stream.
Spare PC: use existing hardware, accept home dependencies
A spare PC can be economical when it is already available, runs the encoder comfortably, and your home upload connection is stable. You retain control over the machine and avoid paying a VPS provider for compute. But the stream still depends on local electricity, the home router and ISP, and your ability to keep the computer maintained.

Power and maintenance to account for
Measure the PC’s average power draw at the wall while it is doing the real encoding workload. Updates, reboots, hardware faults, and encoder crashes can all require attention. A UPS may bridge some short power interruptions, but it will not prevent an ISP outage, a hardware failure, or an outage longer than its available runtime; size it against the measured load and the runtime you need.

average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per month × electricity price per kWh
Include a modem, router, or other always-on equipment only if its consumption is incremental to this project. Add the cost of a PC purchase or replacement only if that cost applies to your setup. There is no universal wattage or electricity rate that can give a reliable monthly figure for every reader.

VPS: move the encoder off the home network, budget for transfer
A VPS can remove your home power and ISP from the encoder-to-YouTube leg. It still depends on the provider, the plan you select, and a working configuration for monitoring and restarting the encoder. Do not assume a low-cost plan has enough CPU for live encoding: test the actual workload and settings for stable output before depending on it.
Compute price is only part of the bill
Estimate the compute tier required by your encoder, then check the plan’s included outbound transfer, how the provider accounts for it, and its overage policy. As a dated provider example, DigitalOcean’s pricing page retrieved October 3, 2026 lists bundled Droplet plans starting at $4/month, with included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB/month. This is one provider’s published starting point, not a benchmark for all VPS plans or evidence that the smallest plan can encode your stream: DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

DigitalOcean’s bandwidth documentation, last verified in 2026, says additional outbound Droplet transfer costs $0.01 per GiB, allowances are pooled across a team, and inbound transfer is free. Check the current terms and your account’s pool before estimating an overage: DigitalOcean Droplet bandwidth billing.
Estimate sustained outbound data
For a rough estimate, multiply the stream bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to get approximate decimal GB per hour. For example, a continuous 10 Mbps stream is about 4.5 GB per hour, or about 3,240 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and differences between decimal GB and a provider’s accounting units. This is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a published YouTube usage statistic. If the encoder runs on a VPS, the feed it sends to YouTube is outbound provider traffic where that provider bills it. Apply the provider’s actual units, allowance pooling, and overage rules to your estimate.

These are conditional trade-offs, not a ranking by measured uptime. There is no comparable uptime or total-cost figure established for a spare PC versus a VPS: your local power and internet history, electricity rate, encoder workload, and the VPS plan’s compute and data terms determine the result.
Choose by testing and calculating, not by the label
- Set the intended output. Choose a YouTube-compatible protocol and encoder configuration based on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you need.
- Test each candidate host. Run representative content at those settings and confirm both encoding performance and a stable upload path.
- Calculate full operating cost. For the PC, use measured wall draw and your electricity rate. For the VPS, include compute and sustained outbound transfer under the provider’s current billing rules.
- Plan for interruptions. Decide how you will monitor, restart, and reconnect the encoder, and consider which dependencies—home power and ISP or provider and plan—are acceptable.
Choose the spare PC if its measured performance, electricity cost, and home-network dependence work for you. Choose a VPS if moving the encoder off the home connection is worth its compute, transfer, and administration costs. A correctly sized and tested setup matters more than whether it is called local or cloud-hosted.
