Short answer: A spare PC is a sensible starting point if it can encode your actual stream, your home connection can sustain the upload, and you can tolerate local power and internet outages. A VPS is worth considering when remote administration and hosting away from home matter more, but only after confirming the specific instance can handle the encoding and sustained network workload. Neither option is a universal winner on cost or reliability; test the finished setup and plan how you will notice and recover from interruptions.
Compare the three practical ways to keep a prerecorded stream running
For an always-on YouTube stream, you can run an encoder on a computer you own, rent a VPS and administer it remotely, or use a cloud service designed to loop uploaded videos. The first two require you to manage the host and encoder; the third shifts that work to the service.

There is no sourced uptime or cost comparison that proves one host is cheaper or more reliable in general. A cloud machine avoids your household power and router as dependencies, but it is still subject to provider, configuration and software failures. A spare PC may have little purchase cost if you already own it, but electricity and hardware wear still matter.
How to decide between a spare PC and a VPS
Check encoding capacity with the stream you will actually run
OBS’s system requirements are not a promise that a particular computer can stream successfully; OBS explicitly cautions that compatibility does not guarantee capability. Workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Test the real loop, not just an idle desktop or a different sample. Verify the outbound connection and its limits
A home encoder sends the stream through your ISP and router. A VPS sends it through the selected provider plan. In either case, check for sustained upload headroom and any data or traffic limits. Cloud bandwidth varies by instance type and operating conditions; AWS documents this for EC2, so check the exact plan rather than assuming all VPS instances provide the same capacity. Compare costs using your own figures
For the PC, use measured power draw and your electricity tariff, and account for any hardware wear. For a VPS, compare a current quote for the precise configuration, region, storage and traffic terms you need. A reader-specific estimate also depends on the ISP’s upload and data conditions. Without those inputs, a monthly saving cannot be stated reliably.

Decide who handles a failure
A PC can be straightforward to access at home, but access while away requires a remote-management plan. A VPS is designed for remote administration, but you still need to notice a stopped encoder or unhealthy stream and take action. Neither choice removes the need for monitoring and recovery.
Set up and test the YouTube encoder
- Confirm the channel can go live. Live streaming must be enabled for an eligible, verified channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled start. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube to configure your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream.
- Choose settings the host can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for a supported codec and stream configuration. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Test the stream and watch stream health. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings rather than assuming a preset works for every host.
- Run a representative test on the intended host. Use the same looping video, duration, resolution, frame rate, audio, overlays and encoder that you plan to use in production. Check the encoder’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream health. A short successful test can show how the setup performs at that time; it cannot establish long-term uptime.
- Plan for the archive separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that a round-the-clock stream will be preserved as one complete replay. If a complete copy matters, retain a separate recording.
- Check rights and platform rules before looping. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and content policies. A continuous stream is not a workaround for those rules; see the copyright safety checklist before going live.
