There is no universal amount a virtual power plant (VPP) will save you. The clearest recent comparison comes from Australia: in financial year 2025–26, median annual bills for VPP participants in the National Electricity Market were $762–$1,093 lower than bills for regular customers. That is an observed difference between groups, not a guaranteed saving—or proof that joining a VPP caused the entire gap.
What the strongest available comparison shows
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), using Australian Energy Market Operator distributed-energy-resource register data and retailer billing data, reported these median annual bill comparisons for the Australian National Electricity Market in financial year 2025–26:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Customer group | Median annual bill difference versus regular customers |
|---|---|
| VPP participants | $762–$1,093 lower (57–63%) |
| Customers with solar and a battery, whether or not they participated in a VPP | $329–$909 lower (20–52%) |
These are comparisons of customer groups, not a forecast for a particular household. VPP participants may differ from non-participants in ways that affect bills, so the full difference cannot be attributed to VPP enrollment alone. The ACCC says VPP households can reduce bills by shifting more electricity use away from peak periods and receiving greater reimbursement for electricity supplied to the grid than solar-and-battery households outside a VPP.
As of January 2026, about 24% of customers with installed batteries participated in a VPP, according to the ACCC. Its report also cites an AEMO projection that approximately 53% battery participation under the step-change scenario could avoid around $7.2 billion in generation and network investment by 2050. That is a projected system-wide benefit, not money paid to an individual household. ACCC, 2026

Why your VPP offer may pay a different amount
A VPP connects batteries so stored electricity can be used or exported when the grid needs it. The financial arrangement depends on the utility, provider, battery and contract. Some offers provide bill credits; others compensate battery capacity or performance, or pay for electricity exported during events. These amounts are not interchangeable, and advertised maximums are not the same as a guaranteed annual saving.
For example, the NSW Government says households generally need an eligible grid-connected battery, a participating provider and a compatible retailer to qualify for its incentive. Providers set which battery models and locations they support, when they can access a battery, what capacity they can use and how they pay for excess electricity. NSW Government VPP guidance

The figures above do not establish a universal battery payback period. The available comparisons do not provide one household’s battery cost, financing, tariff, exports and electricity use together, so they cannot show how long a specific purchase would take to repay. Treat VPP compensation as one part of the economics, not as proof that a battery will pay for itself. The ACCC’s lower-bill comparison for solar-and-battery customers also does not establish a universal battery payback.
