Three VPN providers state in their own published materials that they run RAM-only servers: ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and CyberGhost. Those are the only providers this guide can attribute that claim to, so it does not present a five-provider ranking. A fair best-five order would also need current, independent comparisons of audits, speeds, apps, and prices, which are outside what is covered here.
What RAM-only means for a VPN
RAM is volatile memory. Its contents disappear when power is removed or the machine reboots. A RAM-only VPN server runs its software from that memory, so data handled by the server is wiped on reboot instead of being written to a disk that persists between restarts.

Each of the three providers describes the design this way. ExpressVPN says its TrustedServer technology runs on RAM only and that data is wiped with each reboot. Surfshark’s no-logs page says volatile data is erased when a session ends or a server restarts. CyberGhost’s no-logs page says its servers use RAM-only technology and wipe data on reboot.

- It describes where server data lives, not what a provider records. A service can keep account, billing, or other records on separate systems, and a RAM-only server design does not address those.
- It is not a no-logs policy. No-logs claims need their own policy language and their own audits.
- It does not protect a server that is compromised while running. Data held in memory on a live machine can be exposed whatever the storage medium is.
- It is not the only sound design. Proton VPN argues that full disk encryption can match RAM-only protection under the threat model it describes (covered below).
The three providers that make the claim
Provider pages and trust listings were checked on 7 October 2026. Audit dates are as the providers list them.

| Provider | Official RAM-only statement | Audit listed by the provider | What the listing does not show |
|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | TrustedServer servers run on RAM only; data is wiped on reboot | Cure53 audit of TrustedServer, May 2022 (Trust Center) | Whether a newer review covers the current setup: not stated |
| Surfshark | Servers use RAM only; volatile data is erased when a session ends or a server restarts | SecuRing infrastructure review, completed December 2025 (Trust Center) | Whether the review covered the RAM-only claim itself: not stated |
| CyberGhost | RAM-only servers that wipe data on reboot | None listed on the cited no-logs page | Independent verification of the RAM-only claim: not stated |
ExpressVPN: TrustedServer
ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists a Cure53 audit of TrustedServer dated May 2022. That is a review from 2022 and describes a past point in time. It is not a current performance test, and it does not by itself show how the service is configured today.
Does Surfshark use RAM-only VPN servers?
Surfshark’s own no-logs page says it does. The page states that its servers use RAM only and that volatile data is automatically erased when a session ends or a server restarts. Surfshark’s Trust Center reports a SecuRing infrastructure review completed in December 2025. That listing does not say whether the review examined the RAM-only claim, so treat the two as separate facts rather than as confirmation of each other.

- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*

- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
CyberGhost: RAM-only servers
CyberGhost’s no-logs page says it runs RAM-only servers that wipe data on reboot. The cited page does not name an independent audit of that claim. CyberGhost’s server directory describes availability in over 100 countries. That is a provider-published figure, not one measured independently, and it can change, so check the current count on that page before relying on it.

Why NordVPN is not on the list
NordVPN’s no-logs page describes repeated independent no-logs reviews. Its sixth no-logs assurance announcement, published 3 February 2026, refers to an engagement covering 2025. Those reviews concern logging practices. The pages cited here do not verify NordVPN’s RAM-only claim specifically, so NordVPN should not be counted as a verified RAM-only provider unless a direct, current authoritative source confirms it.

- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Proton VPN: the counterpoint
Proton VPN does not run RAM-only servers. In its 2024 explanation, Proton disputes the idea that RAM-only is inherently more secure than full disk encryption. Its argument is that a running machine can expose data regardless of storage medium, and that properly implemented full disk encryption can offer comparable protection under the threat model it describes. That is Proton’s position, not a settled industry consensus. It is useful here because it shows RAM-only is one design choice among several, and that the threat it addresses (data persisting on disk) is only part of the picture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audits: policy reviews and infrastructure reviews are different
A no-logs assurance review looks at what a provider records. An infrastructure review looks at systems and configuration. Neither is a hands-on test of speed, streaming, or app behavior. When a provider lists an audit, note whether it is a policy review, an infrastructure review, or both, and what it covers. Audits from different dates and different scopes should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to check a RAM-only claim before you subscribe
- Open the provider’s technology or no-logs page and read the exact wording. Note whether it applies to all servers or only some.
- Find the audit listing in the provider’s trust center. Record the auditor, the date, and whether it is a policy review, an infrastructure review, or both.
- Compare the audit date with the claim. An audit from several years earlier describes the system as it was then.
- Read the privacy policy for what is retained about accounts, payments, and connections. RAM-only server design does not cover those.
- In the app, look for a kill switch and leak protection settings, and confirm they work on the devices you plan to use.
- Confirm current prices, renewal terms, refund policy, and country availability at checkout. These vary by market and change over time.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
