“Software Is Over”: AI Developer Announces Seven Open-Source Adobe-Inspired Apps

Artcraft has announced seven open-source apps modeled on Adobe tools. They remain an early-alpha project, and claims of near-term feature parity have not been demonstrated.

Artcraft developer Brandon Thomas has announced seven open-source creative apps modeled on Adobe products, but the announcement is not evidence that they can replace Adobe’s software today. Ars Technica described the suite as “super early alpha”; Thomas’s claims of rapid feature parity are projections, not demonstrated results.

What Artcraft announced

On October 7, 2026, Ars Technica’s Kyle Orland reported that Artcraft—previously presented as a controllable AI tool for artists—had pivoted to a suite of seven apps modeled on Adobe interfaces and tools.

Vector illustration Illustrator
Video editing Premiere
Photo workflow Lightroom
Motion graphics After Effects
Page layout InDesign
PDF work Acrobat Pro

The report says Thomas described the apps as “clean-room replacements” built in Rust with Claude Opus 5.5, and said WebAssembly versions would run in a browser. Those are details attributed to Thomas, not independently verified implementation findings. The Ars report does not provide app-by-app tests, feature inventories, or evidence of compatibility with Adobe files and workflows. Ars Technica’s report is the source for the announcement and the qualifications below.

Are these open-source Adobe alternatives ready to use?

Not on the evidence available in the announcement. Ars Technica characterized the software as “super early alpha” and noted commenters’ criticism of shortcomings. That description matters: an early alpha may be incomplete or unstable, and resemblance to an Adobe interface does not establish that an app can handle a professional task, preserve a complex project, or exchange files reliably.

The report does not establish current release availability, reliability, security, file-format compatibility, or the breadth of features in any individual app. It therefore cannot support calling the suite a proven open-source Photoshop alternative—or a finished replacement for any of the seven Adobe products. People evaluating it for real work should verify the current build and test it on copies of their own files before depending on it.

What Thomas means by “Software is over”

Thomas’s headline-making claim is an argument about what AI-assisted development could make possible, not a finding that software development or Adobe’s products have already been displaced. Ars Technica quoted him saying, “Software is over,” and describing the ambition to create “1:1 functional equivalents, clean room, that are highly performant and cross-platform.”

His timeline changed in the comments reported by Ars Technica. Thomas first said, “We’re going to reach 100% [feature] parity within a month.” He later revised the estimate: “99% parity will take a while, but I’m sure it’ll be measured in months and not years.” Neither statement is a measured result. The report supplies no independent comparison showing parity, and its early-alpha description points to a project still at an initial stage.

Licensing, funding, and the trade-dress question

Ars Technica reports that the free apps are offered under MIT/Apache licenses. It describes their intended funding source as token-based access to Artcraft’s existing visual AI model and IDE, which Thomas said would be available within the apps alongside third-party models. This does not establish that every capability is free or that third-party models share the same terms.

The report also raises a possible legal concern: software reverse engineering can be lawful in general, but close imitation of Adobe’s visual trade dress could still invite legal trouble. That is a reported risk, not a ruling about Artcraft or a conclusion that the apps infringe. The article does not report an outcome of any legal challenge.

What to check before switching from Adobe

For now, treat Artcraft as an announced early-stage project rather than a drop-in replacement. A practical evaluation should answer questions the announcement leaves open:

  • Task coverage: Does the specific app complete the work you need, rather than merely resemble an Adobe tool?
  • Maturity: Can it reliably open, edit, save, and recover your actual projects?
  • File exchange: Does it preserve the formats, layers, effects, and handoffs your workflow requires?
  • Terms and cost: What do the applicable app license and any token-based services cover?
  • Privacy: What data is sent to Artcraft’s model or any third-party model, and under what terms?

The Ars Technica report does not answer these comparison questions with test results. Until those details are established, the announcement supports interest in an ambitious experiment—not a conclusion that Adobe alternatives have reached feature parity.
