Instead, connect the Roku to a network protected by a VPN—usually through a compatible router or a computer sharing its VPN connection. The three options below have Roku-relevant setup or comparison evidence; none can guarantee access to a particular streaming service or catalog.
How a VPN works with Roku
Roku does not offer native VPN app installation. The VPN has to protect the network the Roku joins, rather than run as an app on the Roku itself. That means your practical choice is between configuring a VPN-compatible router, using dedicated VPN router hardware, or sharing a computer’s VPN connection through a hotspot.

Router setup
A compatible router can protect the Roku whenever it connects to that network. Before buying hardware or changing router settings, check the router manufacturer’s documentation and the VPN provider’s current firmware and configuration support. Compatibility depends on the specific router and firmware; a provider’s general router instructions do not establish that every router will work.
ExpressVPN documents a dedicated router, manual router configurations, a router app for certain devices, and a Windows virtual router. Its support page says security updates have ended for its router app on select Asus, Linksys, and Netgear routers. Do not treat that legacy app as a secure default: check whether your exact model is affected and consider a currently supported configuration instead.

Windows hotspot setup
A Windows hotspot can share a computer’s VPN connection with Roku without requiring a dedicated VPN router. It does require a Windows computer to stay part of the setup, and the available settings can vary by Windows version. NordVPN documents Windows wireless-sharing methods; consult the provider’s current instructions before configuring yours.

This is a shortlist based on the available provider setup documentation and independent comparisons, not a promise of universal streaming access. Setup support and review results are different kinds of evidence: support pages describe documented methods, while review findings reflect the reviewer’s tests and conditions.

These options are not ranked by a universal speed or access guarantee. The evidence does not establish that any VPN will work with every Roku model, streaming service, region, account, router, or ISP. Streaming platforms can change VPN detection and account-location rules, so check the service’s current terms and your VPN provider’s current setup support before subscribing or reconfiguring a network.

Choose the setup method before the VPN
Choose a VPN-compatible router if you want the Roku protected without keeping a computer on
First check the exact router model and firmware against both the manufacturer’s documentation and the VPN provider’s supported configurations. Some setups require manual configuration or additional hardware. A dedicated VPN router is an option, not a requirement for every Roku setup; verify the model, subscription requirements, and compatibility before purchase.

Choose Windows sharing if you want to avoid dedicated router hardware
This method trades hardware for configuration and reliance on a computer. As an example, the provider instructions described for Windows sharing involve installing the VPN app, selecting OpenVPN for the documented setup, enabling Windows mobile hotspot, and sharing the VPN connection. The exact controls may change with Windows and VPN-app versions, so follow current instructions for your system rather than assuming the labels remain identical.
Check account location and Roku remote discovery
ExpressVPN advises that the Roku account location should match the VPN router location for streaming. Its guide says Roku account location is based on the IP address used when the account is set up. Treat this as provider guidance, not a guarantee that changing a VPN endpoint changes an account’s eligibility for a service or catalog.

Putting a phone on a VPN can also interfere with the Roku mobile app’s ability to find a Roku on the local network. Roku Support Canada, in guidance last updated August 24, 2026, warns: “Some VPN applications route all traffic through the virtual network, causing your Roku device to not be visible.” If the remote app cannot find the Roku, check that both devices are on the same network and review router isolation settings; the VPN routing behavior on the phone may also matter.

They are useful for comparing reported experience, not predicting your exact speed or proving continuing access to a streaming catalog. Provider setup pages establish that a method is documented, not that it will work with your particular router, account region, or ISP.

Before committing, verify your router’s compatibility, the VPN provider’s current setup steps, and the streaming service’s rules for your account and region. Recheck these details if a provider changes its apps, router support, or server availability.
