Which VPN works with your DD-WRT router?
Start with compatibility, not a provider ranking. DD-WRT support varies by router model and hardware revision, and the installed build determines which client features are available. Check the DD-WRT supported-device list for your exact hardware, then confirm that your firmware exposes the protocol you plan to use.

The provider documentation reviewed here establishes one possible route: Private Internet Access (PIA) gives instructions for manual OpenVPN configuration. Its guide does not guarantee compatibility with every device or build.

Choose this route only after confirming that your router’s installed build offers the required client interface. Provider setup instructions cannot add a protocol that the build does not support.

What to check before choosing
Router model and hardware revision
Confirm the exact model and revision against DD-WRT’s device support information before buying hardware or installing firmware. Closely named versions can differ, so a match on the product name alone is not enough.
Firmware build and client protocol
For OpenVPN, check whether your build includes an OpenVPN Client section. OpenVPN’s DD-WRT tutorial notes that this section may be missing if the installed build is not OpenVPN-enabled.

Router processing capacity
VPN encryption requires router resources, so the same subscription can perform differently on different hardware. PIA Support notes that consumer routers often have less processing power than phones or computers, and says VPN speeds are often lower as a result. Its router article is dated October 5, 2026; read its explanation at PIA’s router article. This is a caution about hardware limits, not a universal throughput figure.

What to expect when configuring DD-WRT
- Verify the device and build. Confirm the router’s exact model and hardware revision are supported, and note the installed DD-WRT build.
- Confirm the client interface exists. For OpenVPN, look for the OpenVPN Client section. If it is absent, the build may not include OpenVPN support; do not assume the provider’s instructions will apply unchanged.
- Collect provider-specific setup details. For an OpenVPN configuration, OpenVPN’s tutorial demonstrates using a downloaded
.ovpnprofile and configuring the client fields. - Follow the provider’s current DD-WRT guide. Enter only the credentials, keys, server details and other values supplied for that provider and your selected server.
- Check that the router connects. Verify the connection in DD-WRT and test a device using the router before relying on the setup. If the expected client controls are missing, revisit build and protocol compatibility rather than substituting unrelated configuration values.
Does one option have the best speed?
The available evidence does not establish a general DD-WRT VPN speed winner or a reliable Mbps figure for this provider. Router performance depends on hardware and configuration, so a result from one device should not be projected onto another.
A 2025 case study, Performance Analysis of OpenVPN on a Consumer Grade Router by Michael J. Hall, examined a Linksys WRT54GL. It found that throughput was mainly limited by cipher choice, while round-trip time mostly depended on transport protocol. That single-router study is useful context for why configuration and hardware matter, but it is not a current buying benchmark or a provider comparison.

How to make the choice
- Choose a DD-WRT-supported router and verify its hardware revision before purchase or firmware changes.
- If your build supports OpenVPN, PIA has a documented manual OpenVPN route for DD-WRT.
- Do not choose on assumed speeds: the published setup guidance does not establish a universal winner, and router CPU capacity can constrain results.
