To check a VPS’s internet speed, install Ookla’s official Speedtest CLI on the VPS and run speedtest. The result measures the connection between that VPS and the selected Speedtest server at that moment; it is not a guarantee for every route or proof that a provider has broken a plan commitment.
Install Ookla Speedtest CLI on your VPS
- Connect to the VPS. Use SSH or your provider’s console with an account allowed to install packages.
- Check the operating system and architecture. Ookla lists Linux packages for i386, x86_64, armel, armhf, and aarch64. Choose instructions for the VPS’s distribution and CPU architecture from Ookla’s official Speedtest CLI page.
- Install the official package. For Debian and Ubuntu, Ookla’s page provides a Packagecloud repository setup script followed by installation of the
speedtestpackage:curl -s https://packagecloud.io/install/repositories/ookla/speedtest-cli/script.deb.sh | sudo bash sudo apt-get install speedtestUse the current instructions for your operating system rather than assuming these commands apply to every Linux distribution.
- Check for conflicting installations if needed. Ookla warns that other, non-official binaries may conflict. If the command behaves unexpectedly, check whether an older
speedtestor similarly namedspeedtest-clipackage is already installed, then follow Ookla’s package-removal guidance.
Run the test and identify what it measures
Run the command on the VPS, not on your laptop or desktop:

speedtestFollow any license or privacy prompts if they appear. The exact prompt sequence can vary by build. The test reports measures including download and upload bandwidth, latency, and packet loss. These describe different aspects of the connection; a strong download result does not by itself establish low latency or no packet loss.
Choose a server and make repeat tests comparable
The test server and the route between it and your VPS can affect the result. For useful comparisons, record the server and timestamp, keep the selected server and test conditions consistent where practical, and run tests at different times. To inspect server-selection or output options, use speedtest --help for the version installed on your VPS. Option names found in older documentation may not apply to a current build.

- For a change-over-time check, repeat against the same server when practical.
- For a suspected route-specific issue, compare with a second known server and note that it tests a different path.
- Compare repeated readings rather than treating one unusually high or low result as the VPS’s normal performance.
Interpret a low or inconsistent result
A Speedtest result is a snapshot of the VPS-to-test-server path. It may reflect the VPS plan’s bandwidth ceiling, contention on shared infrastructure, route quality, test-server load, or a temporary condition. Compare repeated readings with the bandwidth limits stated for your VPS plan. If results remain inconsistent or below what you expect, a second server or separate measurement method can help narrow down whether the issue is tied to one route; the CLI result alone does not establish a provider fault or guarantee.

When comparing two VPS measurements, keep the test setup in view alongside the readings. Compare download bandwidth, upload bandwidth, latency, packet loss, consistency across test times, and the test server’s location or selection. These measurements help describe observed performance; they do not create a universal benchmark threshold or provider ranking.
