No—a VPN’s threat protection is not a substitute for antivirus. A VPN encrypts network traffic in transit; antivirus protects the device by scanning files and monitoring for suspicious activity. Some VPNs also block harmful sites or downloads, but that filtering does not, by itself, establish that the service can detect malware already on your device. On Windows 11, Microsoft includes Defender Antivirus, so check that it is active and current before paying for another product.
What a VPN protects—and what antivirus protects
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for network traffic, making it harder for others to intercept that traffic, according to Microsoft’s home security guidance. That helps protect data moving between your device and the VPN service; it does not, on its own, inspect every file or process on the device.

Antivirus is endpoint protection: it runs on the device, scans for malware, and can monitor behavior that may indicate an attack. Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as including real-time, behavior-based, and heuristic protection in its Windows 11 security documentation. These functions address a different part of the threat chain from an encrypted connection.

VPN providers may add features that block or warn about phishing sites, malicious websites, or downloads. Those are useful web protections, but a blocklist or web-reputation check alone does not show that the product scans local files, watches process behavior, or can respond to malware that is already running.

Do not assume every VPN’s feature works the same way. Implementations vary, and without evaluating a particular provider, it would be inaccurate to say that all VPN threat protection is simply DNS filtering—or that it provides the same endpoint coverage as antivirus.
Microsoft’s mobile documentation illustrates the distinction: Defender for Endpoint web protection on Android and iOS uses a local VPN mechanism for web and phishing protection, while Microsoft documents Defender Antivirus separately as endpoint protection. Do you need to buy antivirus?
If you use Windows 11, start by checking the protection already included with the operating system. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is included in Windows 11 and continually monitors for malware. Windows Security also provides real-time scanning, offline scanning, security-intelligence updates, and ransomware controls. Check the actual device and its settings rather than assuming a paid suite is necessary: Microsoft’s Windows Security settings guidance.

Compare capabilities and costs against what is already enabled; buying a second product simply because a VPN advertises “threat protection” does not resolve the difference between network filtering and endpoint scanning.

How to compare protection features
When assessing a VPN’s add-on filtering or an antivirus product, check what it actually does rather than relying on the label. Useful questions include:
- Device and operating-system coverage: Which of your devices and operating systems are supported?
- Endpoint scanning: Does it scan files and processes in real time, or only block access to selected websites and downloads?
- Behavior monitoring: Does it look for suspicious activity on the device?
- Web protection: Does it warn about phishing and malicious sites, and does it inspect downloads?
- Ransomware response: Does it offer protections such as controlled folder access or recovery options?
- Updates: Are antivirus and anti-malware updates handled automatically and kept current?
- Privacy and usability: What data does the provider handle, and can you operate the protection without disrupting normal use?
- Total cost: What additional feature or support need justifies paying beyond the protection already available on your device?
These are evaluation criteria, not a ranking of products. Microsoft’s documentation describes Windows protections but is not an independent comparative test of VPN or antivirus vendors.

Keep both layers—and the device—up to date
Neither a VPN nor antivirus makes a device invulnerable. CISA’s StopRansomware guidance recommends automatic antivirus and anti-malware updates and notes that attackers may exploit VPNs or use compromised credentials as routes into systems. Its advice is particularly relevant to ransomware and organizational security; it is not a comparative test of consumer VPN threat-blocking features.

- Keep antivirus protection and its security intelligence current; enable automatic updates where available.
- Install software and operating-system updates promptly.
- Avoid suspicious links and attachments, even when a VPN is connected.
- Use unique, strong credentials and protect accounts with multi-factor authentication where available.
