VPN Certificate Errors: Check the System Clock, Not Just the Displayed Hour

A VPN certificate validity error can come from an incorrect system clock—but if time is correct, check certificate dates, trust, installation, and VPN configuration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your VPN says a certificate is expired or not yet valid, check the device’s actual date and time and whether its clock is synchronized. Certificate validation compares a certificate’s notBefore and notAfter dates with the local system clock, so an incorrect clock can make a valid certificate appear invalid. If the time is correct and the error remains, investigate the certificate and VPN configuration instead of repeatedly changing the clock.

Why the system clock can cause a certificate error

A certificate is valid only within a defined time window. Microsoft explains that certificate validation checks notBefore and notAfter against the local clock in its Linux VM certificate troubleshooting guidance. If the device’s clock is materially ahead or behind, that check may fail even when the certificate itself is otherwise valid.

The displayed hour alone is not enough to confirm the clock is right. Check the full date, time, time zone, and synchronization status. A correct-looking hour can coexist with an incorrect date or a clock that has stopped synchronizing.

Check the error before changing anything

Record the complete error text or code, the VPN client and operating system, and whether the connection uses certificate-based authentication. A validity-period message makes time and certificate dates relevant. An error stating that the certificate chain ends at an untrusted root indicates a trust problem, which is distinct from clock skew. Microsoft documents these as separate VPN failure causes for Azure point-to-site VPN and Windows Always On VPN.

Check and synchronize the actual time

Use the time settings supported by your operating system or your organization’s administrator-managed process. For Linux, Microsoft’s example checks UTC with date -u and checks time-service status with chronyc tracking or ntpq -p. Those commands are examples for Linux environments, not universal instructions for every VPN or operating system.

  1. Check the device’s full date and time, including the time zone.
  2. Check whether its time service reports successful synchronization. On Linux, the commands above can help inspect UTC time and service status.
  3. If the clock is wrong or unsynchronized, correct it using the supported system settings or your organization’s process.
  4. Retry the VPN connection once, or repeat the certificate verification relevant to your setup. Microsoft recommends rerunning verification after synchronizing time in its Linux troubleshooting example.

If the validity-period error clears after the correction, clock skew was a likely cause. If it does not, move on to the certificate and VPN configuration.

If the clock is correct, check the certificate and VPN setup

Certificate stores and requirements differ by VPN configuration, so use the documentation for the specific client, gateway, and operating system. Microsoft’s Azure point-to-site and Windows Always On VPN guidance describes distinct certificate locations and failure causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Certificate presence and location: Confirm that the required certificate is installed in the expected store. For the Azure point-to-site configuration covered in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide, the client certificate is identified in the current user’s Personal certificate store.
  • Validity dates: Check whether the relevant client or server certificate has expired or is not yet valid. Microsoft lists an expired server machine certificate as a possible IKE authentication cause for Always On VPN; its certificate-template tutorial explains how to inspect certificate validity dates.
  • Trust chain: Verify that the appropriate root certificate is installed and trusted for the VPN configuration. Microsoft identifies a missing trusted root as one possible cause of Always On VPN error 0x800B0109; a trust-chain error is not fixed by adjusting the clock if the clock is already correct.
  • Server certificate requirements: For Always On VPN, check whether the server certificate includes the required Server Authentication Enhanced Key Usage and whether its name matches the VPN configuration. Microsoft lists missing usage and name mismatch among possible certificate errors in its Always On VPN guidance and certificate tutorial.
  • VPN package or gateway configuration: A corrupted or expired key, incorrect certificate placement, or gateway configuration issue may require an administrator to correct the setup, as described in Microsoft’s Azure point-to-site troubleshooting guide.

When to contact your VPN administrator

For an organization-managed VPN, send the administrator the exact error text or code, your device’s date and time synchronization status, and the VPN client and operating system. Include certificate details only through the organization’s approved support process. Do not disable certificate validation or install a certificate that the system reports as untrusted; those actions bypass protections rather than resolve the underlying trust or configuration problem.
