I Vibe-Coded a Mission Control for My Coding Agents—and Now I Use It Every Day

When coding agents spread across terminal tabs and projects, termist puts their sessions in one local dashboard so you can see which one needs attention.

When several coding agents are running in different terminal tabs, the urgent question is simple: “Which agent is waiting for me right now?” Eyup Ucmaz built termist to answer it: a local dashboard for tracking agent sessions across projects, seeing which ones need attention, and responding without first hunting through terminals.

The problem: agent sessions compete for attention

Running multiple coding agents can turn a productive workflow into a coordination problem. Each session may be doing useful work, but the developer still has to notice when one has finished or needs a decision. When sessions are scattered across terminal tabs and projects, finding the one that requires attention adds context switching of its own.

Ucmaz’s motivating question was: “Which agent is waiting for me right now?” Termist is his attempt to make that answer visible in one place. It is not presented as a replacement for a terminal emulator, editor, or Git; its purpose is to provide an overview and route attention to the right session.

How termist works

Termist consists of a terminal user interface (TUI) and a background daemon. The daemon owns the pseudo-terminals (PTYs) and persistent session state; the TUI attaches over a local socket and displays sessions as cards. Session data is stored locally in SQLite, according to the project README.

Statuses reflect agent signals

The cards distinguish states such as running, waiting for input, done, error, and disconnected. Crucially, termist’s documentation says status comes from each agent’s hooks or integration—not merely from whether its process is alive. A live process may be waiting for a user, while a finished or disconnected session tells a different story.

Respond without hunting through tabs

From the overview, a user can jump to a session that needs attention or send it a follow-up prompt without first entering its terminal pane. The daemon can keep sessions alive when the TUI closes, and the README says sessions may be resumed after a restart. Those capabilities make the control layer useful beyond a momentary status display.

Local state and supported agents

The repository describes termist as running installed agent command-line tools rather than writing into project repositories or changing the agents’ own configuration. It lists Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode, and describes support for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Installation options and platform details can change; consult the current repository instructions for the release and setup that apply to your system.

What “vibe-coded” meant in this project

Ucmaz says he used Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode throughout termist’s design, implementation, testing, and iteration. In his account, these tools helped with scaffolding, repetitive code, experiments, and interface iterations. They accelerated work, but did not make the product decisions for him.

The difficult work was deciding what the tool should do and checking whether it actually did it: whether status matched reality, how process lifetimes behaved, and what happened during cancellation and restart. Ucmaz also tried the real command-line agents in a real terminal rather than treating plausible generated code as proof of a working workflow.

“The agent could generate a plausible implementation. I still had to decide whether it was the right implementation.”

That distinction is the practical lesson in his account. AI assistance can make implementation faster, but someone still has to validate the behavior that matters to users.

What to know before trying it

The project’s maturity labels differ by source and date. In his September 28, 2025 DEV Community article, Ucmaz described termist as beta software and cautioned that Windows had received less real-world testing than macOS and Linux. The repository README inspected October 7, 2026 calls the public build alpha, identifying it as v0.1.0-alpha.1 and warning users to expect rough edges. For current status, the repository is the more recent reference.

  • Agent integrations can change. Because status depends on hooks or integrations, upstream changes to supported agent CLIs may affect them.
  • Terminal and recovery behavior matter. Terminal emulation and restart behavior need to work reliably in real use, not just in a generated implementation.
  • Platform experience may vary. Ucmaz specifically noted less real-world Windows testing in his 2025 account; the repository’s platform listing does not establish equal maturity across systems.

Does a status grid reduce context switching?

Termist addresses a clear workflow problem: seeing which of several agent sessions needs attention and acting on it without searching through terminal tabs. Whether that visibility reduces context switching in practice—or simply makes the chaos more visible—depends on how well its status signals match what is happening and whether the dashboard fits a developer’s working habits. No head-to-head comparison or measured productivity result is established in the sources.

Ucmaz closes his DEV Community article with the question: “does a status grid reduce context switching, or does it just make the chaos more visible?” It is a useful way to frame termist: a personal workflow tool built to solve an increasingly familiar coordination problem, not a proven universal fix.
