For Shopify support, a chatbot handles written conversations; phone support handles calls. They are different channels, not interchangeable labels for AI. Shopify Inbox provides customer messaging with staff replies and an optional automated Inbox agent. Gorgias documents an AI Agent for chat and a separate Voice phone product, but its reviewed documentation does not establish that the AI Agent answers calls. Choose based on how customers contact your store and what your team needs to do in each channel.
Should you use voice AI or a chatbot for Shopify customer support?
Start with customer behavior, not the word “AI.” Count written chats and phone calls separately, then group them by reason: product questions, shipping, returns, sizing, policies, order status, or a problem needing human judgment. Consider which requests need access to a customer’s order and which can be answered from accurate public information.

- Prioritize chat automation if customers mainly ask repeatable questions in writing and your answers can be grounded in current product, policy, and storefront information.
- Prioritize a phone workflow if shoppers regularly call and your team needs call routing, queues, voicemail, or call records alongside agent support.
- Consider both if meaningful volumes arrive through both channels. Check whether agents can see relevant Shopify customer and order context in one workflow rather than treating channel coverage alone as proof of a unified system.
Shopify’s July 4, 2026 guide says about 70% of Shopify Inbox conversations are with customers making a purchase decision. That is a Shopify-published figure, not an independently established result for every store or chatbot. Shopify’s AI chatbot customer-service guide
What Shopify Inbox can do
Shopify Inbox is a native customer-messaging option. Staff can reply to conversations, and merchants can opt in to an Inbox agent for customer chat. Shopify says the agent can draw on the catalog, policies, knowledge-base material, and published storefront content. Staff can also send product links, discount codes, and images.
#1 Best Overall
That makes Inbox a reasonable place to assess written support needs before adding another chat tool. Evaluate whether the available shop information gives useful, correct answers to your store’s actual questions, and decide who will take over when a conversation needs a person. Inbox is a messaging option; its documentation does not make it a telephone voice-AI service.
What Gorgias offers for Shopify chat and phone support
AI Agent on chat
Gorgias documents its AI Agent for pre-purchase and post-purchase conversations across channels including email, chat, SMS, and social. For Shopify-connected chat, setup requires a connected Shopify store, an active AI Agent subscription, Chat installation, and knowledge onboarding. The setup guide says the agent can hand over a conversation when it lacks confidence or relevant knowledge, or detects a listed handover topic. Gorgias also describes handover for sensitive topics and shopper frustration. Gorgias Chat setup · Gorgias AI Agent Chat setup · Gorgias AI Agent documentation
Rank #2
Depending on configuration, Gorgias says the AI Agent can take actions such as canceling orders, processing returns, or updating shipping addresses. Before enabling actions, check which requests require identity verification, what permissions are granted, and how exceptions reach staff. A connected Shopify store can provide customer profiles, order history, fulfillment information, and order management in the helpdesk; confirm the relevant access and configuration for your account. Voice for phone operations
Gorgias documents Voice as a phone product with integrations and features such as phone numbers, call queues, routing, IVR, voicemail, call records or transcripts, and Shopify profile matching. These are phone-support capabilities; the reviewed documentation treats Voice and the AI Agent as separate products and does not establish that the AI Agent automatically answers calls. How the options compare
| Option | What is documented | Best-fit evaluation question |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | Native customer messaging, staff replies, and an optional Inbox agent that uses shop data and published content. | Can written support meet your needs, and who handles questions the agent should not answer? |
| Gorgias AI Agent on chat | AI chat for a connected Shopify store and subscribed account, with onboarding and handover; configured order actions are possible. | Which conversation types and actions will you allow, and how will identity checks and escalation work? |
| Gorgias Voice | Phone integrations and documented calling workflow features, including queues, routing, IVR, voicemail, and call records or transcripts. | Do call volume and team needs justify a phone workflow, and are numbers and features available where you operate? |
| Zendesk | Shopify’s 2026 comparison guide describes a multichannel helpdesk option that includes voice and a Shopify App Store connection; this is secondary editorial evidence, not a verified current vendor specification. | Verify the current Shopify integration, voice and AI scope, pricing, and support operations directly before choosing. |

What to check before choosing
- Measure channel demand. Track chats and calls separately, and classify their common reasons. Do not assume a chatbot will reduce phone demand, or that phone software provides automated voice responses.
- Test knowledge quality. Identify the source of truth for catalog details, policies, shipping, and returns. Check how the tool is onboarded and how it behaves when information is missing or conflicting.
- Set safe boundaries for actions. For order changes or returns, review permissions, authentication, and approval rules. Keep a clear route to a staff member for uncertain or sensitive cases.
- Inspect the agent workflow. Confirm how customer identity, Shopify order context, conversation history, and escalations appear to staff. For calls, also assess queue, routing, voicemail, and call-record handling requirements.
- Compare total cost at your real volume. Include subscriptions, usage-based charges, included limits, and the staff time required to configure and maintain the system. Dated price examples in comparison articles are not a reliable quote for current terms.
- Pilot representative conversations. Test routine and difficult cases using your own products and policies. There is no independent head-to-head benchmark or measured resolution result in the cited material establishing that voice AI or chatbots perform better for Shopify stores.
Can a Shopify chatbot handle phone calls?
Not by virtue of being a Shopify chatbot. Chat automation handles written conversations; calls require phone-channel capabilities. Gorgias documents AI Agent chat and Voice phone operations separately, and the reviewed materials do not show that its AI Agent answers calls. If you need automated spoken responses, verify that a specific product explicitly supports AI call answering rather than inferring it from a Voice or helpdesk feature list.
