Voice-enabled AI can expose more than the words you say: depending on the device and its settings, an activation may send audio to a provider, create a retained recording or transcript, or connect speech to sensitive accounts and devices. Reduce that risk by checking the microphone controls, storage and deletion settings, human-review options, linked permissions, account security, and network protections. For organizations—especially health-care providers—also control who and what can connect, monitor the system, and isolate sensitive equipment and data from household devices.

What does a voice assistant hear?

Many voice assistants listen locally for a wake word or similar activation pattern. That does not necessarily mean they continuously upload everything in the room. But a device can mistake a similar sound for its wake word and activate; after activation, it may record an interaction and send it to the manufacturer’s servers. The exact behavior depends on the product, its settings, and how its speech processing is implemented. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this distinction in its consumer advice on securing voice assistants.

Audio is only one possible data type. A service may also handle transcripts, account details, commands, or profiles inferred from how and when the assistant is used. The provider’s current privacy policy and device settings are the places to check what applies to a particular product; there is no single retention or processing rule for all voice assistants.

Where can audio and related data go?

When an assistant sends an activated interaction to a provider, audio may be retained for a period of time, and some providers have offered settings to review or delete recordings, set a retention period, or enable automatic deletion. The FTC advises users to check these controls rather than assume recordings are deleted automatically. Look separately for settings about audio, transcripts, and use of recordings to improve services, since one control may not govern every data type or purpose.

Some manufacturers have used human review of recordings in certain circumstances, and settings may provide an opt-out. Check the current controls for the account and device you use. In June 2023, the FTC described complaints about Amazon’s voice-assistant practices, including allegations of permanent retention, deficient deletion, and employee access concerns. Those were allegations discussed by the FTC about that company’s practices; they should not be treated as findings about every provider or every current product.

Why are voice recordings sensitive?

A recording can include private conversations, names, routines, or details about people other than the account holder. Voice recordings and voice-derived identifiers can also be biometric data. In a June 2023 explanation, the FTC said biometric data, including voice recordings, warrants the utmost protection and discussed risks such as bias, discrimination, and harmful use.

That does not mean every audio recording legally qualifies as biometric data in every jurisdiction or context. Whether a particular recording or derived identifier falls under a legal definition depends on the applicable law and how the data is collected and used.

What can go wrong beyond recording retention?

Linked accounts and household access

An assistant may have permission to interact with email, calendars, contacts, shopping, or other connected accounts. Anyone who can use a shared device may be able to trigger actions, hear responses, or access information, depending on the assistant’s permissions and safeguards. Unnecessary integrations and weak purchase controls can turn a compromised or casually accessed assistant into a route to more sensitive services.

Account compromise and connected devices

If someone gains access to the assistant account, they may be able to view settings, recordings, or linked services, subject to the provider’s controls. A speaker may also control connected devices. Use a long, unique password and multifactor authentication (MFA) when available; secure purchase actions with a PIN or passcode if the service offers one.

Home network exposure

A voice assistant is one device on a network that may also carry computers, cameras, phones, and other connected equipment. The FTC recommends securing the router. Keep network equipment and connected devices’ software and settings current, and avoid treating the assistant as isolated from the rest of the home network.

How can you reduce risk at home?

  1. Check when the microphone is active. Look for a clear listening indicator and a physical microphone switch or mute button. Use the physical control when you do not want the device to hear nearby conversation; check the device documentation to understand what mute does.
  2. Review audio and activity settings. In the provider’s account or privacy controls, look for whether recordings are stored, how long they are kept, how to delete them, and whether automatic deletion is available. Review separate controls for transcripts, history, or service improvement where offered.
  3. Check human-review choices. See whether people may review recordings in particular circumstances and whether an opt-out is available. Do not assume disabling one feature deletes older recordings or changes other data uses.
  4. Reduce account permissions. Remove linked services you do not need. Use a PIN or passcode for purchases or sensitive actions where available, and use guest or household settings when they provide useful limits on access.
  5. Protect the account. The FTC recommends a password of at least 15 characters for a voice-assistant account. Use a unique password rather than reusing one from another service, and enable MFA when available. The 15-character figure is FTC advice, not a universal security standard.
  6. Secure the home network. Protect router access, keep its software current, and maintain current software and security settings on connected devices. For practical network protections, see the FTC’s voice-assistant security guidance.

How should you assess a voice AI system?

When choosing or configuring a system, assess its data flows and controls rather than assuming a particular brand or architecture is safest. Ask the provider or integrator for clear answers to these questions:

Area What to establish Why it matters
Wake-word and speech processing Which processing happens on the device and which happens remotely? Local wake-word detection does not establish that later speech processing stays local.
Data collected and retained Are audio, transcripts, or derived data kept? For how long, and can users delete them? Retention and deletion controls determine how much past activity remains accessible.
Human review and secondary use Can people review recordings? Are recordings used to improve services, and what meaningful controls exist? These uses create access and privacy considerations beyond the live interaction.
Device and account controls Are there clear listening indicators, physical mute controls, deletion options, and permission controls? People need a way to understand and limit activation, access, and stored history.
Authentication and authorization How are users, devices, and sensitive actions authenticated and authorized? Controls should limit who can access data or issue consequential commands.
Encryption and network design How are communications protected, and are sensitive systems separated from other devices? Network isolation can limit the consequences of a compromised device.
Responsibility across providers Who operates the assistant, platform, integration, and downstream service, and who handles incidents and data requests? Voice systems often involve multiple organizations; responsibility should be clear across the data path.

On-device processing may reduce the amount of data sent elsewhere and can reduce response time, but it is not by itself proof that no data leaves the device. Locally stored information and derived usage profiles may still be accessed or misused. The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) makes this point in its technical training on virtual voice assistants.

What changes for health-care and organizational deployments?

A voice assistant used in a home-health service may sit between a patient and a provider while sharing a home network with personally owned devices. A compromised device or poorly separated network can create routes to sensitive data or systems. NIST’s Cybersecurity White Paper 34, published December 17, 2025, examines hospital-at-home systems connected with smart-home technology and uses voice assistants as a representative Internet of Things device. It describes risks including unauthorized access, interception or manipulation of data, service disruption, altered commands, and data exfiltration.

NIST identifies access control, authentication, encryption and other data-security measures, continuous monitoring, governance, and network segmentation among the mitigations. For a deployment, define authorized users and devices; protect communications; monitor systems; govern how data is handled; and isolate health-care equipment and data from personal IoT devices on the home network. These controls address system risk as well as the privacy of an individual interaction.

The EDPB’s Guidelines 02/2021 on virtual voice assistants, dated July 7, 2021, address data-protection principles, legal basis, technology, and privacy by design and default. They are EU regulator guidance, not a complete legal answer for every location or deployment. Applicable obligations depend on jurisdiction, data type, the roles of controllers and processors, and the use case; organizations should assess their own legal and operational responsibilities.

What local processing does—and does not—guarantee

Processing speech on the device can keep some information local and may reduce response time. It does not establish that all data remains there: other operations may send data to a provider, and local records or usage profiles can still be accessed or misused. Treat local processing as one factor in a system’s data-flow assessment, not a substitute for retention controls, account security, access restrictions, and network safeguards.

Sources and scope

This guide draws on consumer guidance from the FTC, EU guidance from the EDPB, and NIST’s December 2025 health-care cybersecurity paper. It does not establish a universal legal rule, verify the current settings or behavior of a specific product, or identify one assistant as safest. For a particular device or deployment, confirm its current documentation and applicable regulatory requirements.
