Developers can build useful products around voice AI by helping people complete tasks, connecting speech agents to business systems, and making deployments measurable and reliable. The opportunity is broader than making a machine sound human: products must handle real conversations, take appropriate actions, and show results under production conditions.

What the market signals do—and do not—show

A 2025 survey by Deepgram and Opus Research of 400 business leaders found that 67% considered voice AI core to their product and business strategy, while 84% planned to increase budgets in the following 12 months. The same survey found that 92% captured speech data and 56% transcribed more than half of their interactions. These are sponsor-reported survey findings, not universal measures of adoption or forecasts for every market segment. Deepgram and Opus Research, The State of Voice AI Report (2025).

The survey also points to an implementation gap: 80% of respondents used traditional voice-agent systems, but only 21% reported being very satisfied. Half used traditional voice agents for task or service automation and considered it the most compelling voice-agent use case. That combination suggests a practical opening for developers: improve how systems complete workflows, rather than assuming that interest in voice translates into satisfaction with existing tools.

Coval’s 2026 report claims the market reached $10.3 billion with 51% year-over-year growth, speech recognition accuracy improved by 54%, and costs fell by 60–87% across the stack. These are Coval’s figures; the reviewed report does not establish them as independently measured industry statistics. They should be treated as the report’s claims, not as settled market-wide benchmarks. Coval, Voice AI 2026: A Strategic Guide for Scaling Enterprise Voice AI (2026).

Where developers can find product opportunities

Task-focused agents for a specific industry

Build an agent around a narrow workflow with a clear finish line: for example, answering a service question, changing an appointment, or collecting information before handing a case to a human. Customer support and service automation appear as use cases in the Deepgram survey, and OpenAI describes customer support as an early voice application. The differentiation is likely to come from domain knowledge, reliable actions in existing systems, safe escalation, and proof that the task was completed—not from a generic conversational interface alone.

Language learning and coaching

Real-time voice can support role-play practice or conversational coaching where speaking and listening are central to the activity. OpenAI describes a language-learning app using role-play and a nutrition and fitness coaching app that can make human specialists available when needed. These are examples of product patterns, not evidence that either category has a particular market size.

Voice application infrastructure

Products can also serve teams building voice applications: speech recognition, speech synthesis, real-time audio transport, telephony, orchestration, function calling, interruption handling, and deployment controls. Deepgram presents an integrated voice-agent API while supporting external model choices; OpenAI describes real-time audio streaming and function calling. Infrastructure products can reduce the work required to connect these pieces, but buyers still need to test whether the system fits their application’s languages, users, latency, and deployment constraints. Evaluation and reliability tooling

Teams need to know whether an agent resolves the user’s issue, when it makes an error, and whether a handoff helps or frustrates the customer. This creates room for tools that generate test cases, review calls, measure outcomes, and surface operational problems. Coval’s report emphasizes testing, monitoring, and continuous improvement; Coval also sells evaluation infrastructure, so its recommendations should be understood as vendor perspective rather than independent validation.

Integration and deployment services

Many deployments require connecting an agent to customer records, communications systems, or a specialized environment. OpenAI describes integrations with LiveKit, Agora, and Twilio, while Deepgram lists managed, single-tenant, VPC, and self-hosted deployment choices. These examples indicate integration and deployment work developers can pursue; they do not establish that a particular configuration satisfies a customer’s regulatory or security requirements. Confirm those requirements directly with the providers and the customer.

Choosing an architecture: modular pipeline or unified voice API

Approach What it combines Main trade-off Consider it when
Modular pipeline Separate speech recognition, language-model, and speech-synthesis components. Components can be selected or replaced independently, but the team must coordinate streaming, latency, turn-taking, and interruptions across services. You need control over component selection or want to assemble a system around existing services.
Unified voice API A provider combines speech processing and conversation orchestration, and may include synthesis and tool-calling support. It can reduce integration work, while tying more of the implementation to the provider’s capabilities and terms. You want a more integrated starting point and the API’s behavior fits your requirements.
Direct real-time audio interaction Audio input and output stream directly through a real-time model interface. It can avoid a separate transcription-and-synthesis sequence, but must still be evaluated for control, integrations, cost, and production behavior. Natural conversational timing is important and the interface supports the actions your product needs.

OpenAI’s October 2024 Realtime API announcement, updated through August 2025, contrasts a multi-step speech pipeline with direct audio streaming and describes function calling. Deepgram’s Voice Agent API product page describes features including barge-in detection, turn prediction, function calling, and bring-your-own-model support. These are provider descriptions; validate behavior with your own workload. OpenAI, Introducing the Realtime API.

Compare systems against the actual deployment

  • Measure end-to-end latency, including pauses and interruptions—not just the response speed of one component.
  • Test recognition with the languages, accents, background noise, and domain terminology your users actually bring.
  • Assess generated voice quality and how much control you have over delivery.
  • Check model flexibility, orchestration, and whether tool calls can complete the transactions your product requires safely.
  • Verify telephony and application integrations, plus deployment, privacy, and data-residency requirements.
  • Review observability, evaluation, escalation, and recovery behavior for failed or uncertain interactions.
  • Estimate total cost using realistic call duration and concurrent usage; confirm the billing unit, current limits, and commercial terms with the provider.

Provider prices and limits change. OpenAI’s launch announcement includes historical pricing and limits; Deepgram’s product page displays a $4.50-per-hour figure for its full stack. Neither figure is a durable, like-for-like cost comparison. Check current pricing and what each rate covers before estimating unit economics.

How to validate a voice product before scaling it

A polished demonstration is not evidence that an agent will work reliably with customers. Coval’s 2026 report presents a comparison of 95% week-one success in controlled demonstrations versus 62% with real customers. These are Coval-reported figures, not independently validated benchmarks, but they illustrate why testing should include realistic users and conditions rather than only scripted demos.

  1. Define success as an outcome. Specify what counts as a resolved task, what information or system change proves completion, and which cases require a human.
  2. Build representative tests. Cover common requests as well as interruptions, unclear speech, unsupported requests, tool failures, and other cases where the agent should recover or escalate.
  3. Test the full interaction. Evaluate recognition, response timing, turn-taking, action execution, and handoff together. A strong component score does not guarantee a successful conversation.
  4. Run trials in production-like conditions. Include relevant noise, devices, call durations, concurrency, and integrations, then check whether behavior remains acceptable outside a controlled demonstration.
  5. Monitor results and improve. Review conversations and operational data to identify recurring failures, refine tests, and prioritize changes. Handle recordings and user data according to applicable customer and provider requirements.

Coval’s report identifies resolution rate, average handle time, human-agent productivity, post-escalation outcomes, and the full customer journey as evaluation considerations. Developers can use these as a starting set of measures, then choose metrics that reflect the product’s actual goal. A faster call is not necessarily a better one if it ends without resolving the customer’s problem.

Business models and costs to test

AWS Startups suggests that voice-AI monetization may combine platform fees with usage-based components. This is a model to evaluate, not a guarantee of viable margins. A developer might test whether customers value a predictable platform charge, usage pricing tied to activity, or a combination; the right choice depends on the product’s operating costs and the customer’s buying preferences. AWS Startups, AI has found its voice, and startups are listening (August 18, 2025).

Before committing to a pricing model, calculate costs at realistic call lengths and concurrency, including the services required to run the complete interaction. Recheck current provider prices, limits, and terms at launch: the available historical and product-page figures are not enough to establish present-day costs or expected margins.

What makes an opportunity durable

Voice can be a better interface when speaking is convenient or when the task benefits from an ongoing spoken exchange. It is not automatically preferable to chat. The strongest product case is one where voice helps a user finish a meaningful task, the agent can act through trusted integrations, and people have a clear path to a human when automation falls short.

That also changes how teams should think about their advantage. A launch-day voice that sounds convincing is easy to mistake for product quality; durable value comes from learning where real interactions fail and improving the system against outcomes that matter. The competitive question is less “How human does it sound?” than “What gets resolved, at what cost, and with what quality of handoff?”
