Voice Access, Voice Typing or Windows Speech Recognition: Which to Use in Windows 11

For Windows 11 22H2 and later, Voice access is the recommended speech engine for controlling your PC and writing by voice. Here is how it differs from Voice typing and the legacy Windows Speech Recognition.

For Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, use Voice access if you want to control your PC and write or edit text by voice. Use Voice typing if you only need to dictate into a text field. Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) is the older feature. Microsoft says Voice access replaced it for Windows 11 22H2 and later in September 2024, so WSR matters mainly on earlier Windows versions.

Choose by what you need the feature to do

The three options differ in scope, not in quality. Voice access is the broad tool. Voice typing is a narrow text-entry tool. WSR is the legacy option that Microsoft has retired on current Windows 11 builds.

Check your Windows version first

Open Settings > System > About and look for the version under Windows specifications. If it shows 22H2 or a later version, Voice access is the recommended choice. If your system is older, use WSR where it is available and consider updating Windows before relying on it for daily use.

Voice access: what it does

Microsoft’s Voice access setup page describes the feature as enabling people to “control their PC and author text using only their voice and without an internet connection.” Read that sentence as describing use after setup. The first run still requires a download of language files, as covered below.

Voice access can navigate Windows, interact with on-screen controls, and dictate and edit text. Because it handles commands as well as dictation, it is the better choice for someone who wants hands-free operation rather than a single text box.

Voice typing: the narrower option

Voice typing is started with Windows logo key + H and sends speech into the currently focused text field. It does not provide the full PC-control feature set. If you only write emails, documents, or search queries, Voice typing may be all you need. If you want to open apps or click controls by voice, switch to Voice access.

Windows Speech Recognition on older systems

WSR is still documented by Microsoft, and its command page states that “Voice access replaced Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) for Windows 11 22H2 and later versions in September 2024.” WSR is relevant only if you are on an earlier Windows version where Voice access is not available. On Windows 11 22H2 and later, Microsoft directs users to Voice access.

Setting up Voice access

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Speech and turn on Voice access. You can also search for “Voice access” from the Start menu.
  2. During first setup, select a supported language and allow the required language files to download. This step needs an internet connection.
  3. Choose the input microphone you want Windows to use. Setup also checks microphone permissions.
  4. If Windows reports that microphone access is blocked, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow access for apps.
  5. Optionally, run the interactive guide to learn the commands before relying on them.

Language support

Microsoft’s setup page lists the following language options for Voice access. Language support can change, so confirm the current list in the setup screen before you rely on a particular dialect.

Microphone and noise filtering

Microphone choice

Voice access lets you select the input device during setup. Microsoft’s instructions do not require a headset or recommend a specific product. A USB headset with a built-in microphone is a reasonable optional choice if you want a dedicated input device, but the official setup material does not establish that it performs better than a built-in or other microphone.

Noise filtering options

Voice access offers three filtering settings:

  • Voice Isolation is designed to focus on your voice when there is background sound or other speakers nearby.
  • Remove background noise only filters non-speech sounds but does not apply the voice-focus processing.
  • No filtering leaves the microphone input unprocessed.

On privacy, Microsoft’s Voice Isolation documentation states: “All speech processing happens on your device, so your voice data stays private and is never sent to the cloud.” That statement applies to Voice Isolation processing. Microsoft also says its setup does not save raw recordings. It does not make a general claim about every speech feature in Windows.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Language files will not download: the first setup needs internet access. Connect, then retry the language selection.
  • Commands are ignored in a noisy room: try Voice Isolation. Microsoft notes that overlapping speech and very noisy environments can still cause recognition errors, and in a quiet room Voice Isolation may not make a noticeable difference.
  • Windows does not hear you: confirm the correct microphone is selected and that microphone access is allowed in Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  • Your language is missing: check the language list above. If your dialect is not listed, choose the closest supported option or use Voice typing if your text entry needs are simpler.

What the official sources do not establish

Microsoft’s support pages describe features, languages, setup steps, and privacy behavior. They do not publish accuracy, speed, or accent-performance comparisons between Voice access, Voice typing, and WSR, and they do not rank microphones. This guide therefore recommends engines by task and Windows version, not by measured recognition quality.
