Telekom is the strongest starting point if you want the widest nationwide 5G area coverage in Germany. In the latest precise operator comparison available, published by Telekom on June 17, 2026, the figures are 89.1% for Telekom, 76.2% for O2 (Telefónica), and 75.7% for Vodafone; the company says the comparison uses Bundesnetzagentur data through December 2025. That national lead does not establish which network will work best at your home, workplace, or regular route. For your own answer, compare all three networks at the places you actually use your phone, then consider a test SIM if the choice matters.
What the coverage figures say
Telekom leads the latest precise operator-specific comparison of 5G area coverage. Telekom’s June 17, 2026 release reports 89.1% for its network, 76.2% for Telefónica (O2), and 75.7% for Vodafone, based on Bundesnetzagentur data available through December 2025. Because these figures appear in a Telekom release, they should be read with that source and data date attached.

The Bundesnetzagentur’s December 2025 release provides an earlier regulator-published comparison, covering October 2025: about 87% for Telekom, 76% for Telefónica, and 75% for Vodafone. Both comparisons put Telekom ahead in nationwide 5G area coverage, but the percentages describe land area, not the share of people who have a signal indoors or the quality of service in a specific place.
The regulator’s monitoring page, with data status June 2026, reports that at least one operator provides 4G over 97.8% of Germany’s area, some form of 5G covers 96.2%, and more than 98% has mobile broadband through 4G or 5G. These are combined nationwide figures: they do not mean that each network reaches those same areas.

Why the nationwide winner may not be best for you
A national area-coverage percentage cannot tell you whether a particular room, building, road, or rail journey will have usable service. The Bundesnetzagentur’s mobile map estimates outdoor reception in 100-by-100-metre cells. Reception can vary within a cell, and an outdoor estimate does not establish indoor coverage or guarantee a minimum speed.
Buildings and their materials, terrain, trees, your device’s capabilities, and movement can all affect the signal you experience. A 5G indication also answers a different question from 4G coverage; check the technology available at each location rather than treating any signal as equivalent.

The figures above compare area coverage, not speeds or overall network quality. They do not establish that one operator will be faster or more reliable at every address.
How to compare Vodafone, Telekom, and O2 for your routine
- Open the Bundesnetzagentur’s mobile-monitoring map. Search for your home and compare Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica/O2 at the same location.
- Repeat the check for places you regularly visit. Include work, school, and other destinations, plus the roads or rail routes you actually use. A network that performs well at home may not suit your commute.
- Check the technology layer. Compare 4G and 5G separately, and check 5G standalone where the map shows it. Do not assume that a broad 5G total applies to every operator.
- Use the map as an outdoor forecast. If you depend on reception inside a home or workplace, treat the map as a first check rather than proof of indoor service.
- Try another network locally if the decision is consequential. The Bundesnetzagentur says consumers can use test SIM cards to check other networks before changing provider. Test at the places and times that matter to you.
- Check which network a tariff uses before comparing plans. A provider’s brand is not necessarily the operator of the mobile network behind its service. Confirm whether the tariff uses Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica, or 1&1, then compare its price and terms.
What to do about weak indoor calls
If calls are unreliable inside a building, first check the other networks at that address and consider a local test SIM before switching. Wi-Fi calling may improve call reliability where the feature is available, but it is not a substitute for checking cellular reception on the routes and in the places where you need mobile service.
