A smart TV without internet can still be useful: connect an HDMI device, or use an antenna if the TV supports over-the-air reception. While disconnected, it cannot send data over that internet connection—but built-in streaming apps and other connected features may stop working. The exact setup and offline behavior depend on the TV model.
What still works when a smart TV is offline?
For many TVs, the screen can keep displaying content from devices connected over HDMI even when the TV itself has no internet access. RTINGS says the TVs it tested could be disconnected after setup and used as basic HDMI displays; that finding applies to its tested sample, not every model. Roku Support likewise says Roku-branded TVs can play HDMI content after setup while offline.

Some compatible TVs can also tune live over-the-air broadcasts from an antenna. The Federal Trade Commission says TVs made since 2007 have a digital tuner for antenna reception. That is a compatibility threshold, not a guarantee of reception: signal availability depends on your location and conditions, and an antenna does not provide premium subscription channels. Check setup requirements first
Offline use may depend on completing initial setup while connected. Roku Support says all Roku-branded TVs require internet to complete setup, then can be disconnected for HDMI sources or antenna Live TV. Do not assume that requirement applies to other brands; check the setup instructions for your exact model. Roku Support: Getting to know your Roku TV

What does disconnecting change about privacy?
When a TV has no internet connection, it cannot send data over that connection during the offline period. That is a practical consequence of being offline, not proof that the TV did not collect or store data earlier, that every radio is disabled, or that the device never communicates by another route.
Smart-TV data practices vary by manufacturer, model, settings, region, and the services used. The FTC’s 2016 smart-TV workshop discussed viewing-data collection and automated content recognition (ACR), which can identify screen content and report it. The workshop is historical context, not a current audit of every television. FTC: Fall Technology Series—Smart TV

Turning off one tracking feature may not stop every data flow
Roku’s Smart TV Experience disclosure says that, when enabled, ACR can collect information about viewing through antenna and devices connected to a Roku TV. It also says that disabling the feature does not affect data collected when a user streams through internet channels; those channel operators may have their own practices. This is a Roku-specific disclosure, but it illustrates why an ACR opt-out and stopping all collection are not the same thing. Roku: Smart TV Experience

What do you give up by keeping the TV offline?
Depending on the model, built-in streaming apps, online recommendations, and internet-delivered updates may be unavailable until the TV reconnects. A TV may still serve as a display, but it will not provide the same connected experience. Consult its manual for what works without a network and how updates are delivered.
If you need streaming apps, an external HDMI streaming device can provide them while the TV remains offline. That does not make streaming private: the device’s platform has its own data practices and privacy controls. RTINGS describes this as a shift in the connected-platform relationship, not the elimination of it. RTINGS: Why Smart TVs Track What You Watch: And Why It’s So Hard To Stop Them

Which option fits what you watch?
| Approach | Privacy and convenience | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the TV offline; use HDMI or antenna | It cannot report over its internet connection while disconnected. Built-in connected services may be unavailable. | People who mainly use a game console, disc player, cable box, or local broadcasts. |
| Keep the TV online; adjust settings | Preserves connected features, but settings vary and opting out of ACR may not stop app or service data collection. | People who want built-in apps and are willing to review privacy controls. |
| Keep the TV offline; add a streaming device | Restores streaming convenience, but the streaming provider has its own data practices and controls. | People who want apps without connecting the TV itself. |
| Use an antenna for broadcasts | Receives local over-the-air channels without internet delivery; reception depends on location and conditions. It does not supply premium subscription channels. | People seeking local broadcast TV on a compatible set. |
How to make the change without losing what you need
- Check the TV’s setup requirements. Look up the instructions for the exact model and confirm whether initial setup requires internet. Roku-branded TVs, for example, require a connection to complete setup.
- Identify your content sources. Confirm that the HDMI devices you rely on work, or check antenna compatibility and likely reception if you want local broadcasts.
- Decide whether built-in apps are essential. If they are, either keep the TV online and review its controls, or consider an external streaming device with a separate privacy relationship.
- Disconnect the TV from the network. Use the model’s network settings or disconnect its wired network connection. Menu names and exact steps differ by television.
- Test the sources you plan to use. Switch to each HDMI input or scan for antenna channels as applicable. If a feature depends on an internet connection, reconnect or consult the manual for a model-specific alternative.
If you keep the TV online, reduce unnecessary data sharing
Disconnecting is not the only option. The FTC advises people to update connected devices, disable or disconnect features they do not use, review smart-TV tracking controls, and remove unused apps. Its concise recommendation is: “Disable or disconnect what you don’t use.” The available settings and their effects depend on the TV and its services.
