Choose Freeview if you want free-to-view live TV and can receive the channels you want through an aerial. Choose Vodafone TV if you are eligible for its paid plan and want a connected TV hub, extra channels and apps—or value the Netflix and HBO Max subscriptions included with its Essential tier. The right choice depends on reception at your address, your Vodafone eligibility, what you already pay for, and whether you prefer an aerial or internet-delivered TV.
Vodafone TV vs Freeview at a glance
| What matters | Vodafone TV | Freeview and Freeview Play |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Vodafone’s 2 October 2026 launch announcement lists £10 per month for Vodafone TV and £17 per month for Vodafone TV Essential, on 24-month plans. | Freeview live channels have no monthly subscription. A compatible receiver, aerial or installation may involve a one-off cost. |
| Live TV delivery | Streams via Freely and the internet; Vodafone says no dish or aerial is required. | Uses a working aerial and compatible TV, box or recorder. Reception and channel availability vary by address. |
| Catch-up and apps | Includes Freely catch-up and on-demand content, with other apps and services available; some may require separate subscriptions. | Freeview Play adds supported catch-up players on compatible internet-connected equipment. |
| Included subscriptions | Essential includes Netflix Standard with Ads and HBO Max Standard with Ads under the launch terms. | Freeview itself does not include paid streaming subscriptions. |
| Best suited to | Eligible Vodafone customers who want a single interface and will make use of its included services and features. | Viewers who want free-to-view live channels and have suitable reception and equipment. |
Vodafone’s launch announcement describes Freely as offering over 70 live channels, plus an additional 150+ live channels on the wider service. Vodafone’s package page uses a separate headline of 200+ live channels, so these counts should not be treated as a directly reconciled total. Freeview says its service offers over 100 channels, but the number available in a home depends on coverage.

What Freeview and Freeview Play require
Freeview live TV
Freeview is the UK’s digital terrestrial TV service. Its live channels do not require a monthly subscription, but you need a compatible TV or receiver and a working aerial. Use the Freeview postcode checker to see what is receivable at your address before choosing equipment or arranging aerial work.

Freeview Play and internet features
Freeview Play adds supported catch-up and on-demand services alongside live TV on compatible, internet-connected equipment. Freeview lists services including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, All 4, 5 and UKTV Play, although availability depends on the device. Freeview states a minimum 2 Mbps internet connection for catch-up and on-demand use. A compatible recorder can also provide pause, rewind and recording, but check the specific model’s feature list.
Freeview has no monthly charge for its channels, but a receiver or recorder, aerial and any installation can cost extra. A TV licence is a separate UK legal requirement when watching broadcast TV; Freeview does not remove that obligation. See Freeview’s cost guidance and Freeview Play overview.

Which service should you choose?
Choose Freeview if you want straightforward free-to-view TV
- You want live channels without a monthly TV-service subscription.
- Your home receives the channels you care about, and you have a working aerial or can arrange one.
- You already have compatible equipment, or the one-off cost of a receiver or recorder makes sense for you.
- You are content with Freeview Play’s supported catch-up services rather than a single paid aggregation package.
Choose Vodafone TV if its bundle fits your household
- You meet Vodafone’s eligibility requirements and have the required internet connection.
- You want Freely and additional channels, apps and games gathered in one TV service.
- You value the Netflix and HBO Max tiers included with Essential enough to justify its recurring plan cost.
- You are comfortable with a 24-month plan and its specified annual charge increases.
Do not count an included subscription as a saving unless you would otherwise pay for it. Compare the exact Netflix Standard with Ads and HBO Max Standard with Ads tiers, not just the services’ names, with the subscriptions your household currently uses.

- Check reception: enter your postcode in Freeview’s channel checker and confirm that the channels you want are available locally.
- Check your equipment: establish whether your TV has Freeview built in, whether your aerial works, and whether you need recording or pause and rewind.
- Check Vodafone eligibility and terms: confirm that your mobile or broadband plan qualifies, the current price, the contract length, and any scheduled price changes.
- Compare the household’s actual costs: include existing streaming subscriptions, any one-off aerial or receiver costs, and whether you would use Vodafone’s included services.
- Consider your connection: Freeview live TV comes through an aerial, while Vodafone TV depends on internet-delivered television; Freeview Play also needs internet for its catch-up features.
Why headline channel counts are not enough
The services deliver TV differently, and their published counts are not necessarily like-for-like. Freeview’s total depends on local reception. Vodafone’s announcement distinguishes Freely’s over 70 live channels from an additional 150+ channels, while its package page headlines 200+ overall. Compare the actual channels and services you watch, rather than choosing by a headline number.

There is no independent comparison in the cited material establishing which service offers better satisfaction or value overall. Vodafone commissioned an Opinium poll of 2,000 nationally representative UK adults, conducted 25–29 September 2026; it reported that 40% felt they paid for TV services they did not regularly use. That is a Vodafone-commissioned survey, not an independent measurement of Vodafone TV versus Freeview.
