The right path depends on each workload: move it to another virtualization platform, shift it to managed cloud infrastructure, modernize the application, or keep it on VMware under a different licensing model. Compare operational fit, hardware and storage, migration effort, support, and total cost before choosing.
What should a business compare when evaluating VMware alternatives?
Treat this as a platform strategy decision, not just a hypervisor comparison. Some applications may move to another hypervisor with limited change; others may be better candidates for managed cloud services or redesign. A continued VMware deployment may also remain viable if its licensing and operating costs fit the business.

Start by grouping workloads according to their dependencies and change tolerance. Identify which ones need specialized hardware, particular storage behavior, high availability, strict recovery targets, or integrations with existing management and backup systems. Then compare candidate paths against those needs rather than assuming every workload should move to the same destination.

Which VMware alternative fits each operating model?
| Path | Why evaluate it | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Proxmox VE | Proxmox describes VE as a bare-metal platform using KVM/QEMU for virtual machines and LXC for containers. Its listed capabilities include clustering, high availability, migration, and multiple storage options. The software has no license cost according to Proxmox, which also offers commercial subscription support. | Can the team operate the platform and obtain the support it needs? Validate storage, backup and restore, availability, integrations, guest support, and migration behavior with representative workloads. Vendor feature descriptions are not a substitute for that validation. |
| Nutanix AHV / Cloud Infrastructure | Nutanix is an integrated hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) option. A 2025 NAND Research report hosted by Nutanix identifies Nutanix Move as a migration tool. | Check hardware compatibility, storage architecture, migration scope, commercial terms, and partner support. Treat the report’s comparative assessments as attributed analysis: it is hosted by a vendor that recommends Nutanix, not independent proof that the platform is the best fit. |
| Microsoft Hyper-V / Azure-integrated infrastructure | Worth evaluating where Microsoft ecosystem alignment is valuable. The 2025 NAND Research report includes Microsoft options in its discussion of alternatives. | Confirm workload compatibility, supported hardware, management tooling, licensing, Azure operating costs, and whether the features your workloads actually require are available in the proposed configuration. |
| Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization | Runs virtual machines alongside containers within Kubernetes. It is most relevant when VM migration is part of a broader application-modernization strategy and Kubernetes is an intended operating model. | Assess Kubernetes skills, migration tooling, feature requirements, and the boundary of vendor support. Do not select it solely as a way to change hypervisors if the organization is not prepared to operate Kubernetes. |
| Public cloud or application modernization | Selected workloads can move to managed infrastructure or cloud-native services instead of being rehosted on another hypervisor. Microsoft’s Azure VMware Solution update names Azure-native infrastructure, Azure Red Hat OpenShift, and Azure App Services among possible Azure destinations. | Model application changes, network and data dependencies, security, compliance, cost controls, operational ownership, and exit options. A destination that suits one application may be unsuitable for another. |
| Continue Azure VMware Solution (AVS) | For businesses that want to keep VMware in Azure, a VCF bring-your-own-license (BYOL) SKU is a lower-disruption path to evaluate against moving workloads elsewhere in Azure. | Determine whether affected license-included reservations can transition in time, and compare the cost and operational implications of BYOL with the alternatives available for each workload. |
How do hardware, storage, support, and cost change the decision?
Check the full infrastructure path
Confirm that the destination supports the server hardware, storage design, network configuration, guest operating systems, and integrations your applications depend on. A platform’s feature list does not establish that a particular combination of hardware, storage, backup, and workload will behave as required. Validate those combinations directly with the relevant vendors and in a proof of concept.

Include the operating model and support
Account for who will patch and monitor the platform, manage capacity, handle incidents, test recovery, and maintain automation. Compare the support you can obtain with the support your service levels require. A technically suitable platform may still be a poor operational fit if the team lacks the necessary skills or cannot secure the right support arrangements.
Build a workload-based total-cost comparison
A lack of software license fees does not establish a lower total cost. For each candidate, include hardware, migration labor, training, storage and backup, network changes, ongoing staffing, and support. Also account for periods when both the old and new environments must run. No apples-to-apples prices or total-cost figures are established here, so use your own workload inventory and vendor quotations rather than assuming a savings percentage.

What should Azure VMware Solution customers know about the licensing dates?
Microsoft Learn’s Azure VMware Solution licensing update, last updated 1 September 2026, says that AVS itself is not ending; the change concerns license-included SKUs. It lists two dates that affected customers should distinguish:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- 31 October 2026: Microsoft says license-included PayGo SKUs retire on this date.
- 30 August 2027: Microsoft says license-included services retire on this date. Affected customers need to move to a VCF BYOL SKU or fully migrate to a new Azure destination to avoid service disruption on 31 August 2027.
These dates apply to the license-included arrangements described by Microsoft, not to every AVS customer. Check Microsoft’s current guidance and your specific reservation or service terms before acting; transition options depend on the customer’s situation.

How should a business plan and validate a VMware move?
- Inventory applications and dependencies. Record workload owners, service dependencies, data location, network connections, recovery needs, performance requirements, and licensing constraints.
- Sort workloads by the change they can tolerate. Separate those that may move with limited application change from those needing redesign, hardware refresh, storage rework, or a new operations model.
- Shortlist destinations per workload. Compare a new virtualization platform, managed cloud infrastructure, application modernization, or continued VMware operation according to the workload’s requirements.
- Run a representative proof of concept. Set acceptance criteria in advance for recovery behavior, performance, backup restoration, maintenance windows, monitoring, automation, access controls, and vendor support boundaries. Test more than a simple successful startup.
- Plan cutover and rollback per application. Define the change window, validation steps, decision point for rollback, and responsibilities for each workload. Include the cost and staffing needed while both platforms operate during transition.
- Confirm commercial and technical terms before commitment. Verify current licensing, hardware compatibility, support scope, migration-tool availability, and partner assumptions with the relevant vendors. Platform details and commercial terms can change.
How to make the final choice
Choose a destination only after it meets the workload’s technical and recovery requirements, the business can operate it, and the full transition cost is acceptable. A mixed strategy is often more realistic than forcing every application onto one replacement: retain VMware where continuity justifies it, re-virtualize suitable workloads, and modernize or move others when that produces a better operational fit.
