Windows Media Player Legacy is a better fit if you specifically want its built-in library, metadata, playlist, audio-CD creation, and portable-player transfer features. This is a feature-based comparison, not a claim that one player is faster or more reliable in every setup.

Which player handles more local file types?
VLC has the stronger published case for format breadth. Its feature list names common containers such as MP4 and AVI as well as MKV, FLAC, MPEG, and numerous codecs. That makes it a practical first choice when files come from different sources or you do not know which codecs they use.

A filename extension alone does not guarantee that a player can decode a file: containers such as MP4 can hold different codecs. Windows Media Player 12 has a documented supported-file list, but Microsoft notes that adding codecs to Windows may enable additional formats. Its page also describes a specific MPEG-2 program-stream limitation when an MPEG-2 video decoder is not installed; that condition should not be treated as a universal statement about every file or current Windows configuration. Choose WMP Legacy if you want a music-oriented workflow that combines a library with playlists and metadata, including album art. Microsoft also describes creating audio CDs and transferring music to portable players. Those bundled functions may matter more than broad format coverage if your collection already works with the player and you want to manage it there.

Keep the edition distinction in mind: WMP Legacy is not the newer Media Player app. Microsoft recommends the newer app for modern video features such as 4K. Microsoft’s current WMP Legacy guidance.
DVDs, CDs, and setup on Windows
For DVDs, VLC has the clearer advantage: VideoLAN lists DVD input, while Microsoft explicitly says DVD playback is not included in WMP Legacy. VideoLAN also lists Video CD, Super Video CD, and Audio CD input. If your PC has no optical drive, the player choice alone will not provide one.

VLC’s Windows download page lists version 3.0.23 and says that build runs from Windows XP SP3 through the latest Windows 11. WMP Legacy’s availability is less uniform because Windows treats it as an optional feature and availability depends on edition. How to choose for your setup
- Pick VLC if you often encounter varied formats, want a player whose published capabilities include DVD input, or prefer not to depend on Windows Media Player 12’s documented format list.
- Pick WMP Legacy if your files already play and you value its library, playlist, metadata, CD-creation, and portable-player transfer workflow.
- Check a problem file’s codec if playback fails. The extension is only part of the picture, and WMP’s supported-format page allows for additional codecs installed in Windows.
- Check your Windows edition if WMP Legacy is missing, especially on an N edition where the Media Feature Pack is relevant.
- Try both interfaces if control layout is the deciding factor. There is no controlled comparison here that establishes one as universally easier to use.

The available official product and support material supports a comparison of listed formats, features, and Windows availability. It does not provide a controlled benchmark for playback speed, reliability, or ease of use, so those are not grounds for a universal winner.
