What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, then use Find my files to review search scope and customize indexed locations. For Classic indexing, select Customize search locations, choose Modify, and clear the check box beside any folder you want to remove from the index.
How do I stop Windows Search from indexing a folder?
- Open Settings and go to Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Microsoft’s Windows 11 search settings guide documents this route.
- Under Find my files, check whether the search scope is Classic or Enhanced.
- For Classic, select Customize search locations, then Modify. In the Indexing Options window, clear the check box beside the folder you want to exclude, select OK, and close the dialogs. Microsoft explains that indexed locations can be managed through this control in its search indexing guidance.
- Give Windows time to update the index, then search for a known file to check the change. Microsoft says an initial index build can take up to a couple of hours; later changes are processed in the background. That is general guidance, not a timing guarantee for an individual PC (Microsoft Support).
Removing a location means its files may no longer appear in indexed search results. If you still need a file from that folder, open the folder in File Explorer and search there. Searching This PC covers more locations but can be slower, according to Microsoft’s file-search guidance.

Choose Classic or Enhanced indexing
The indexing mode controls broad coverage; it is not a substitute for checking the folder list when you want to exclude specific locations.
| Mode | Coverage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | By default, Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop. | Narrower scope than Enhanced; use Customize search locations to review the included locations. |
| Enhanced | User folders and files across the whole PC. | More comprehensive coverage, but can use more system resources and affect CPU consumption and battery life. |
These are Microsoft’s documented distinctions for Windows search and indexing; Microsoft does not quantify a performance difference for a particular computer.

Exclude file contents without removing a folder
If you want to keep a file’s name searchable but do not need to search inside its text, change the setting for its file type instead of excluding its folder. In Indexing Options, select Advanced > File Types, choose the relevant extension, and set it to index properties only rather than properties and file contents. Properties-only search can retain filename and other property matches, but the document’s text will not be searchable. Microsoft Support notes that “Choosing not to index the contents of files can reduce the size of the index, but it makes files harder to find in some cases” (Search indexing in Windows).
What to expect after changing indexed locations
Windows needs time to incorporate the change. Microsoft’s general guidance says an initial indexing process can take up to a couple of hours and that later updates happen in the background as files change. The index is usually less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files, but Microsoft cautions that many very small files (under 4 KB) or computer code can increase that proportion. Neither figure is a guarantee for a particular PC (Microsoft Support).

If search results are still incomplete
For missing files after a Windows upgrade, Microsoft’s support flow directs users to Advanced indexing options > Advanced > Index Settings > Troubleshoot search and indexing. Follow the wizard. Microsoft presents this as an upgrade-related troubleshooting path, not a guaranteed solution for every indexing problem (Microsoft Support).
Windows 10 location setting
On Windows 10, Microsoft lists Start > Settings > Search > Searching Windows for the indexing controls. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this path applies to the older operating system and does not mean it remains supported (Microsoft Support).
