OBS documentation does not compare their long-session reliability, CPU or GPU use, or failure rates. How Media Source works for a single looping video
Media Source adds audio or video files directly to an OBS scene. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a single showroom video, add a Media Source, select the file, and turn on Loop in its properties. OBS restarts the file when playback completes.
Other properties can affect playback behavior: you can restart playback when the source becomes active, use hardware decoding when available, hide the source when playback ends, close the file when it is inactive, adjust playback speed, and choose a YUV color range. Keep the default behavior unless you have a specific scene or playback requirement; in particular, test any changes to activation or visibility behavior in your scene.

How VLC Video Source works for a playlist
VLC Video Source plays files through VLC libraries and supports a playlist. OBS describes its playlist behavior as similar to an image slideshow. Add the showroom videos to the playlist, then set Loop Playlist if the sequence should begin again after its final item. For randomized playback, enable Shuffle Playlist as well.
Install the matching VLC edition first
VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. If you run 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; otherwise the source may not be available in OBS. The VLC installation requirement applies to VLC Video Source, not Media Source.

Choose what happens when the source is not visible
VLC Video Source includes a Visibility Behaviour setting that determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is hidden. Consider how your scenes use the source: a hidden source that keeps playing may not resume where you expect, while pausing or stopping changes what happens when it becomes visible again. VLC Video Source also documents network caching and audio and subtitle track settings.

Set up the showroom loop in OBS
- Prepare the media. Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast every video and audio asset. Keep the files accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Choose the source. In the scene where the showroom content should appear, add a Media Source for one repeating file, or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. For VLC Video Source, install VLC first and match its bitness to OBS.
- Set the playback behavior. Turn on Loop for a single Media Source file. For a VLC playlist, set its item order and enable Loop Playlist; also enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized order.
- Check the scene composition. OBS scenes and source ordering determine the composed layout and which items appear above others. Confirm that the video, any overlays, and any audio sources appear as intended.
- Start the encoder stream and check YouTube’s preview. YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance calls for verifying the channel and checking the Live Control Room preview before going live. Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast; a file looping in OBS does not prove the outgoing stream is working correctly.
YouTube Live checks for a showroom broadcast
- Channel eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to use encoder-based live streaming.
- Rights and policies: YouTube’s live terms require compliance with Community Guidelines. The provider represents that it has the necessary rights to live content, including applicable music licensing rights. Check rights for both picture and sound, including music in a showroom video.
- Long-stream archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends a local archive backup, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive as the sole recording of a long-running loop.
What the source choice does—and does not—settle
The number of files and desired playback order are the clearest decision points: Media Source loops one file, while VLC Video Source handles playlists with loop and shuffle controls. The sources also differ in dependency and playback controls: VLC requires an installed VLC edition matching OBS’s bitness and provides visibility behavior for playlist playback; Media Source offers controls such as restarting when active and closing the file when inactive. Documentation does not establish a performance or reliability winner, so those questions require testing on the specific system.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and ensure its bitness matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- A single file stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- A playlist does not start over after its last item: Enable Loop Playlist in VLC Video Source.
- A playlist plays in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled and review the playlist order.
- Playback changes when switching scenes: Check VLC Video Source’s Visibility Behaviour, or review Media Source’s restart-when-active and close-when-inactive controls.
- The OBS preview looks right but the YouTube broadcast does not: Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor the outgoing audio and video; local playback in an OBS source alone does not verify delivery to YouTube.
- The long stream has no complete YouTube archive: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording plan for content you need to retain.
