Check those stages in order before changing bitrate or replacing equipment. A live connection can remain active even when the picture has stopped advancing.
Find the stage where playback freezes
Compare what you see at the source, in the encoder, in YouTube Live Control Room, and on an affected viewer’s device. Note the time of the freeze so you can match it against encoder logs, local recordings, and YouTube stream-health messages.

- Source: Does the same file or playback source freeze when played outside the live setup?
- Encoder: Does its preview freeze at the same moment, or does the encoder report errors or unusually high CPU load?
- YouTube ingest: Does the local archive show the same fault, and does Live Control Room report a health error?
- Viewer playback: Does the stream look healthy in the encoder and archive while only some viewers report freezing?
This comparison helps distinguish a faulty source from an encoder, upload, or viewer-side issue. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance likewise separates source and encoder problems from outbound internet problems.

1. Check the original video
Play the prerecorded video outside the live pipeline and inspect the section where viewers saw the freeze. If it stalls there too, the problem is already present in the source; changing YouTube settings will not repair that file. If the source plays normally, continue to the encoder.

2. Inspect the encoder preview, errors, and local archive
Watch the encoder preview while the stream runs. Check its error messages and CPU load, and compare the preview with a local archive of the outgoing stream, if you record one. A matching freeze in the preview or archive points toward the routed source or encoding stage rather than viewer playback.
For a continuous stream, also check that the source is advancing and that the local archive file continues to grow. YouTube’s live-event tips recommend checking the preview, verifying archive integrity and file growth, testing encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video quality. The source-advancing check is a practical extra for a looping 24/7 stream.
Update the encoder software if it is out of date. If the source appears sound but the preview or archive still fails and the cause is unclear, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.

3. Read Live Control Room stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator. Note the timestamp and severity of each message, then compare it with the preview, archive, and encoder logs. YouTube describes red errors as critical and potentially capable of preventing an event from starting or causing user problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality.
Pay particular attention to keyframe-related messages. YouTube’s live-stream error reference notes that keyframes not being sent often enough can cause buffering. Match the message to the time of the freeze rather than changing settings blindly.
4. Test whether the upload connection can sustain the stream
If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble, investigate the outbound connection. Test the upload path under conditions representative of the broadcast, and contact your internet service provider if the connection is poor. Choose a stream quality the connection can sustain reliably, test encoder settings before relying on them, and monitor stream health during the stream.

Average bitrate alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: congestion can still cause trouble even when a connection can sustain the average rate. YouTube’s guidance is to “choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.”

If the source, encoder, archive, and stream health show no fault at the same time as the report, ask affected viewers to try another network and a supported device. YouTube’s viewer-side guidance also recommends using the YouTube app or youtube.com, updating the browser or device, and restarting where appropriate.
For viewers watching on a TV, YouTube says the “Default” broadcast-delay setting is best for minimizing playback interruptions. “Decrease” lowers delay but is more likely to interrupt playback.

Review settings that can affect continuity
Quality, bitrate, and connection capacity
There is no single bitrate that fixes every freeze. Choose settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and for the upload capacity available throughout the stream. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance covers protocol, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes; treat its recommendations as applicable to the chosen format and connection, not as universal values. Test with representative motion and audio before depending on the setup.
Keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. This is a configuration recommendation, not a guarantee that changing the interval will fix a frozen source or every kind of playback problem. Use it when reviewing encoder configuration or when stream health reports point to keyframes.
Latency
Lower latency leaves viewers with less read-ahead buffer, so playback is more vulnerable to buffering. If a prerecorded 24/7 stream does not depend on real-time interaction, the lowest possible delay may not be worth that continuity trade-off. Choose latency based on whether immediate interaction matters to the channel.

If you run the stream yourself, use a continuous monitoring routine
A 24/7 stream can develop a problem long after its initial setup. Check that the video keeps advancing, watch the encoder preview and YouTube health indicator, confirm any local archive continues growing, and review logs when viewers report a freeze. Test failover before relying on it, and compare a reported incident’s timestamp across the source, encoder, archive, and stream-health messages. These checks help locate the failing stage without assuming that every freeze has the same cause.
