If you want your VIZIO TV remote to change soundbar volume, the documented setup is to connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and enable HDMI-CEC on the TV. That is HDMI device control—not Bluetooth pairing between the TV remote and soundbar. Exact compatibility and TV menu names depend on your models.
What “pairing” means in this setup
VIZIO’s instructions describe using HDMI ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC so an existing TV remote can control soundbar audio. The soundbar manual says, “Now you can use your existing TV remote control to control the soundbar audio.” VIZIO’s SV210M-0808 manual and SV210X-0805 product information describe this behavior for those products. It is not a universal promise for every TV and soundbar combination.

Set up TV-remote volume control over HDMI
- Check the ports. Confirm that both the TV and soundbar have HDMI ARC or eARC ports. Connect the soundbar’s TV/eARC port to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC. Use the included HDMI cable if you have it; VIZIO says a cable is included with the cited models.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV. Find the CEC setting in the TV’s settings and turn it on. TV makers use different names and menu paths, so consult the TV’s manual rather than relying on a universal path. VIZIO’s soundbar manual also refers users to the TV manual for CEC instructions.
- Select the soundbar as the audio output if needed. Use the TV’s audio or sound-output settings to select the external audio system or soundbar, if the TV does not switch automatically.
- Test the TV remote. Try volume up, volume down, and mute. VIZIO says the HDMI eARC connection on the cited SV210X-0805 allows the TV remote to control soundbar volume.
If the remote still does not control the soundbar
- Confirm the cable is connected to the ARC/eARC-labeled ports on both devices, not simply any HDMI port.
- Check that HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV, and verify the audio output is set to the external soundbar where that setting is available.
- Check the exact TV and soundbar manuals for model-specific compatibility and settings. The available instructions do not establish one menu path or feature behavior for every model.
- If you are using an optical connection, treat that as a different setup. The cited VIZIO manual directs optical-connection users to VIZIO support; it does not promise the same TV-remote behavior or give a universal optical procedure.
Do not confuse TV-remote control with app pairing
VIZIO also documents Bluetooth pairing between a mobile phone and a soundbar for app control. That is a separate control path: pairing a phone with the soundbar does not pair the TV remote. App discovery steps and timing vary by guide, so follow the instructions for your specific soundbar rather than applying a model-specific button sequence to another model.

What to check before replacing a cable or remote
The HDMI cable is included with the VIZIO models cited here, so a replacement is only relevant if yours is missing or damaged. Before buying an HDMI ARC cable, verify that both devices have compatible ARC/eARC ports. If by “VIZIO remote” you mean the soundbar’s own remote rather than the TV remote, check the soundbar’s model number and remote compatibility before choosing a replacement; availability and compatibility vary by model.

For model-specific help
For more exact steps, identify the TV and soundbar model numbers and say whether they are connected by HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. Those details determine which settings and control behavior apply.
