Vivint’s “no-contract” option refers to month-to-month monitoring when you buy the equipment upfront—not free equipment or a guarantee that every feature works without service. If you finance the equipment, the financing agreement is separate from the monitoring plan, and credit approval is required. The distinction matters: you may avoid a long-term monitoring commitment while still paying substantial equipment and installation costs.
What does “no contract” mean with Vivint?
Vivint says it offers month-to-month monitoring to customers who purchase equipment upfront. Its financing FAQ describes “month-to-month options for customers who prefer flexibility,” while its package FAQ ties that option to paying for the equipment upfront. These are Vivint’s descriptions of its offer, not a substitute for the terms in an individual customer’s agreements. In practical terms, “no contract” is about the monitoring-service commitment. The equipment still has to be paid for, and Vivint warns that system functionality can be limited without a Vivint services plan, including loss of remote connectivity. Ask which functions in your setup depend on ongoing service before deciding that month-to-month monitoring gives you a fully independent system.
What are the published costs?
Vivint’s HomeProtect offer terms list equipment at $349.99, professional installation at $199, and monitoring at $29.99 per month, unless otherwise advertised. These are published offer prices, not a guaranteed or personalized quote; location, selected products and services, fees, taxes, and offer terms may affect what a customer pays. For HomeProtect Pro, Vivint advertises monitoring starting at $44.99 per month, plus $5 per month for each camera. That is starting pricing rather than a quote for every configuration. Vivint’s monitoring page gives the advertised rate.
What happens if you finance the equipment?
Financing spreads equipment payments over time, but it does not merge them with monitoring. Vivint says financing is offered through third-party partners, requires credit approval, and involves a separate financing agreement. Qualified customers may be offered 0% APR for up to 60 months; the available terms depend on the offer and lender approval. The monitoring charge remains separate. That separation changes what “flexibility” means. Month-to-month monitoring does not, by itself, cancel or pay off an equipment-financing obligation. Before signing, get both agreements and ask for the account-specific payoff amount and the process and notice required to end monitoring. Vivint’s public materials do not establish identical cancellation obligations for every signed account.

The public offer terms also say offers may not be available in every location and fees and taxes may apply. Ask for a written quote for your address and configuration, then compare the equipment, installation, recurring monitoring, financing terms, and cancellation obligations separately.

What should you verify before you sign?
- Two agreements: Request the monitoring/service agreement and, if financing, the separate credit agreement. Confirm who the lender is and which terms govern equipment payments.
- Total due now and later: Ask for equipment and installation charges, the monthly monitoring rate, any camera add-ons, fees, taxes, and the financed amount and repayment schedule.
- Cancellation details: Get the required notice, cancellation method, any applicable fees, and the remaining equipment balance in writing. Do not assume month-to-month means cancellation is automatic or cost-free.
- Feature dependencies: Ask which functions require active monitoring or another Vivint service, including remote access and connectivity, and what remains usable if service ends.
- Offer availability: Confirm that the quoted prices and financing terms apply at your address and to your selected equipment; published offers may be location- or offer-dependent.
Why financing deserves a careful review
The Federal Trade Commission says Vivint agreed to a $20 million settlement resolving FTC allegations that its representatives misused credit reports to help unqualified customers obtain financing. The FTC later described payments to harmed consumers. The case concerns those allegations and affected consumers; it does not show that every customer’s financing was affected. Review your own credit authorization and financing documents, and raise any concern directly with the lender and relevant consumer-protection authorities. It may suit someone who wants to avoid a long-term monitoring commitment and can pay for equipment upfront, provided the service agreement confirms the expected cancellation terms and the system’s service-dependent features are acceptable. Financing can reduce the initial equipment outlay, but adds a separate credit agreement and payment obligation; it does not make monitoring part of the equipment loan. The right comparison is the full written quote and both agreements—not the “no-contract” label alone.
