For most plumbing and electrical jobs, a rechargeable head torch is the most practical starting point: it keeps both hands free and directs light where you look. Add a positionable inspection light when you need steady illumination on equipment or a work surface. If a job involves a potentially explosive atmosphere, choose only a light approved for the site’s classification; ordinary brightness and convenience features are not substitutes for hazardous-area certification.
Which torch format suits the job?
There is no single best torch for every trade task. Choose by how the light must be positioned, how long it must run in the mode you use, and what the worksite requires. Manufacturer product listings illustrate available features, but they are not independent performance tests.

Head torches for hands-free work
A head torch is useful when both hands are occupied and you need light to follow your line of sight. Ledlenser UK describes its Work Series as designed for professional daily use and specifically names electricians and plumbers. Milwaukee UK likewise markets rechargeable head torches for hands-free worksite lighting; its listing gives up to 20 hours for a USB-rechargeable headlamp, but runtime depends on model and operating mode. Check the exact product listing and the mode you intend to use before relying on that figure.
Inspection lights for fixed, close-up illumination
A handheld light can be more useful when you need to aim illumination at a fitting, panel, or work surface without moving your head. A magnetic base or hook can hold the light independently while you work. Brennenstuhl lists those features on its HL 1000 ACW inspection light, along with front COB lighting, a spot light, a replaceable 18650 battery, and an IP54 rating. Its CL 600 MA is described as a compact adjustable light for tasks including electrical and plumbing work, with magnetic and attachment features.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep a backup available
For work where losing illumination would complicate the task or exit, consider whether you need a separate backup light. A primary torch’s stated runtime is not a guarantee of runtime in your chosen mode or of uninterrupted lighting if its battery runs down.
How to compare ordinary work torches
Do not rank work lights by lumens alone. Match their practical specifications to the task and compare the exact model variants rather than treating a brand range as one product.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mounting and positioning | Head straps keep hands free; magnets, hooks, and adjustable bodies can place light on or near equipment. |
| Beam pattern | A focused beam can help illuminate a particular point, while broad illumination may suit a nearby work area. Check the product’s stated lighting modes. |
| Runtime in the mode you will use | Catalog runtime figures can refer to a particular mode or model. Confirm the conditions and exact variant rather than assuming the maximum applies at full output. |
| Battery and charging | Check whether the battery is built in or replaceable, the charging method, and whether a spare battery can be used or carried. |
| Ingress protection | Compare the listed IP rating with the conditions the light is designed to withstand; an IP rating does not establish hazardous-area approval. |
| Availability and variant | Product lines and specifications can change. Confirm that the exact model offered carries the features and approvals you need. |
Fenixlight UK’s catalog includes professional work torches, inspection-style lights, and ATEX models. Treat catalog output and availability as model-specific claims that may change, not as a comparative test result.

If a worksite may contain flammable gas, vapor, or dust, do not select a torch by brightness or brand alone. First establish the area classification and applicable local rules, then verify that the exact light variant’s approval and markings match the location. Product examples are not blanket approvals: Atex Global lists the Ledlenser EXH6R as ATEX 0/21 and gives certificate references and an IP68 claim; Peli lists the 3335RZ0 as ATEX/UKEX Zone 0 and describes a separately sold right-angle adapter. Check current certificates, the full marking on the exact product, and local acceptability before using either in a particular site.

OSHA’s portable-lighting guidance says that, in the covered context, explosion-proof, self-contained portable lights must be used where flammable vapors are at or above 10% of the lower explosive limit. That is a statement tied to the relevant OSHA setting, not a universal threshold for every workplace or jurisdiction. Follow the site’s hazard assessment and governing requirements.

Wet or conductive locations in US construction
Under OSHA construction rule 29 CFR 1926.405, portable electric lighting in wet or other conductive locations such as drums, tanks, and vessels must operate at 12 volts or less. The rule allows 120-volt lights if they are protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This is US construction guidance; workers elsewhere must follow the rules applicable to their jurisdiction and task.

Confined-space work
OSHA describes permit-required confined spaces as potentially having a hazardous atmosphere or other serious hazards, and notes that lighting equipment may be needed to work safely and exit quickly. A torch does not make a permit space safe. Lighting belongs within the applicable confined-space assessment, entry procedures, and controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOSHA also says portable or emergency lights are intended for short-term use and must not be used to perform work tasks unless they supplement existing lighting in the context covered by its publication. Do not treat a portable torch as a replacement for required task lighting or site safety controls.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the work setting. Establish whether the job is ordinary indoor or outdoor work, a wet or conductive location, or a classified hazardous area; use the applicable local rules.
- Choose how the light should be held. Start with a head torch when hands-free, line-of-sight lighting is useful. Add a magnetic, hooked, or adjustable inspection light when the work needs steady illumination on a nearby surface.
- Check the exact model’s operating details. Compare beam modes, runtime at the intended mode, battery replacement and charging, attachments, and IP rating.
- For hazardous areas, verify approval before comparing convenience features. Match the exact product marking and current certification to the site classification and rules.
- Plan for loss of light. Decide whether the task requires a separate backup, particularly where uninterrupted illumination is important for safe work or exit.
