For Vive Base Station 1.0, HTC recommends no more than 5 m (16 ft 4 in) between the two stations. For Base Station 2.0, HTC’s cited guidance gives supported play-area dimensions and tracking range, not one universal maximum distance between stations. “Vive sensors” and “Vive cameras” commonly refer to these SteamVR tracking base stations.
How far apart should Vive base stations be?
The answer depends on the base-station generation. HTC explicitly recommends a maximum 5 m between two Base Station 1.0 units. For 2.0, the available HTC figures describe room-scale play areas and the distance from a station to the headset or controllers; they should not be treated as a station-to-station limit.

| Setup detail | Base Station 1.0 | Base Station 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Station-to-station guidance | Maximum 5 m (16 ft 4 in), per HTC’s setup guidance. HTC Base Station 1.0 setup guidance | The cited HTC pages do not state one universal maximum station-to-station distance. |
| Room-scale area | Minimum 2 m × 1.5 m; HTC also describes movement within a diagonal up to 5 m. HTC play-area guidance | HTC’s FAQ says up to 7 m × 7 m; its Base Station 2.0 product page lists up to 5 m × 5 m with two stations and up to 10 m × 10 m with four. These figures are stated in different HTC contexts. HTC play-area FAQ · HTC Base Station 2.0 specifications |
| Placement guidance | Diagonal positions, above head height and ideally over 2 m; angle downward 30–45°. Field of view: 120°. HTC Base Station 1.0 setup guidance | Opposite corners, ideally above 2 m; angle downward 25–35°. Field of view: 150° horizontal and 110° vertical. HTC Base Station 2.0 setup guidance |
HTC lists a minimum room-scale play area of 2 m × 1.5 m for both generations. That floor-space requirement is not the same measurement as the gap between stations: room shape, station placement, obstructions and compatible hardware all affect usable tracking coverage.
What the Base Station 2.0 area figures mean
HTC’s Vive Pro 2 FAQ says a Base Station 2.0 play area can reach 7 m × 7 m. HTC’s Base Station 2.0 product page instead lists up to 5 m × 5 m with two stations and 10 m × 10 m with four. Because those figures differ, identify the source and setup rather than presenting either as a universal station-spacing rule. The Vive Pro 2 product specifications also list tracking-area support of up to 10 m × 10 m with four Base Station 2.0 units. In its guidance for installing more than two 2.0 stations, HTC says up to four can be used in one room, with a room up to 10 m × 10 m. It also says the headset and controllers should remain within 7 m of a station for proper tracking. That 7 m figure is device-to-station range, not the distance between two stations. SteamVR handles channel assignment automatically in this multi-station setup. HTC guidance for installing more than two Base Station 2.0 units
Where to mount the stations
Base Station 1.0
Place the units diagonally across the play area, mounted securely above head height and ideally more than 2 m from the floor. Aim them toward the center with a downward angle of 30–45°. HTC gives a 120° field of view and advises avoiding bright-light locations because they can negatively affect performance. HTC Base Station 1.0 setup guidance

- Keep the front panels pointed toward the play area and avoid physical obstructions in their fields of view.
- Secure each station so it cannot be bumped or vibrate; unstable mounts can undermine reliable tracking.
- For 1.0, keep the two stations within HTC’s recommended 5 m maximum.
If tracking is unreliable or the room is too large
- Identify the generation. Check whether the units are Base Station 1.0 or 2.0 before applying a spacing figure; the explicit 5 m maximum is for 1.0.
- Check placement. Confirm the stations are diagonally opposed, aimed toward the play area, mounted securely and not blocked by objects.
- Consider the room dimensions and device range separately. For 2.0 multi-station guidance, HTC gives up to 10 m × 10 m with four stations and a 7 m station-to-headset/controller range.
- Verify compatibility before adding stations. HTC’s cited expansion guidance applies to Base Station 2.0; do not assume the same four-station path for a 1.0 setup. Check that your headset and controllers support the base-station generation you plan to use. HTC lists VIVE Pro Series and Cosmos Elite compatibility for 2.0, and VIVE Pro 2 compatibility with both generations. HTC Base Station 2.0 compatibility · HTC Vive Pro 2 specifications
