Vivaldi and Brave both block ads and trackers on Android, but they organize their controls differently. Vivaldi makes it easy to choose a blocking level and set exceptions; Brave groups protections in Shields, including fingerprinting defenses and configurable filters. Official documentation does not establish a current, controlled winner for blocking effectiveness, so the better fit depends on which controls and browser features you prefer.
How do Vivaldi and Brave differ at a glance?
| What matters | Vivaldi on Android | Brave on Android |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking approach | Choose No Blocking, Block Trackers, or Block Trackers and Ads; apply levels globally or per site. | Shields bundles ad and tracker blocking with other protections; adjust Shields for a site or customize filter lists. |
| Filter controls | Enable listed sources, import rules-list URLs, and view blocker statistics. | Enable additional lists, update lists, and create custom filters. |
| Documented privacy options | Secure DNS choices, private-tab locking, preloading controls, HTTPS options, data deletion, and a WebRTC IP-broadcast control. | Fingerprinting and cookie controls, HTTPS upgrading, script controls, and per-site Shield settings. |
| Android features highlighted by the vendor | Customizable tabs and themes, private tabs, QR scanning, extensions, and cross-device sync. | Shields and browser settings; some desktop features, including Playlist and private windows with Tor, are not currently available on Android. |
| Sync claim | Vivaldi says sync uses end-to-end encryption. | Brave describes client-level encryption of sync data. |
These are documented controls and features, not results from a matched performance test. Blocking can vary with app version, enabled lists, site behavior, and how much breakage you are willing to tolerate.

Which Android browser blocks ads better?
There is no established controlled Android head-to-head result here that shows one blocks more ads than the other under equivalent settings, lists, sites, and test conditions. Both offer ad and tracker blocking, and both let you change protection for an individual site. Avoid treating a feature list, blocker count, or app rating as proof of superior real-world blocking.

Vivaldi: choose a clear blocking level
Vivaldi offers three global levels: No Blocking, Block Trackers, and Block Trackers and Ads. You can also set a level for a specific site through the address-bar Content Blocker or an exceptions list. Its Android help explains how to enable available sources, import another rules list by URL, and review blocking statistics. See Vivaldi’s guide to its Android tracker and ad blocker.

Vivaldi also offers an EasyList Cookie List option intended to hide many cookie warnings. Blocking cookie notices or necessary cookies can affect how a site works, so test the site and use an exception if needed. The browser’s Privacy Report can show counts over selectable periods.
Brave: configure protections through Shields
Brave describes Shields as blocking most ads and associated trackers, handling cookies, making browser fingerprinting harder, and upgrading connections where a site supports HTTPS. It also provides script blocking, element blocking, per-site settings, and custom filters. Those are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every ad or tracking method will be blocked. Read Brave’s explanation of Shields.

Which is more private: Vivaldi or Brave?
There is no single privacy setting that settles the comparison. Brave documents specific Shields protections such as fingerprinting defenses and cookie controls; Vivaldi documents a broader set of configurable privacy options, including secure DNS selection and private-tab locking. Your settings, sync choices, and tolerance for site breakage matter. Vendor documentation describes intended behavior; it is not an independent security audit.

Vivaldi’s additional privacy settings
Vivaldi’s Android privacy settings include optional HTTPS-only behavior, secure DNS choices (including a custom provider), preloading controls, and options to delete or automatically clear browsing data. You can lock private tabs when leaving the app. Its WebRTC IP-broadcast setting is enabled by default and can be disabled, though Vivaldi warns this may affect functionality. The browser also offers a Do Not Track request, but sites can ignore it. See Vivaldi’s Android privacy and security settings guide.
Brave’s Shields trade-offs
Brave lets you change Shield settings for the current site. Stronger choices, such as blocking JavaScript or all cookies, may stop pages or features from working. Brave lists Firewall + VPN separately from browser Shields: it is an adjacent service, not a requirement for the free browser’s built-in protections. Browser-level blocking should not be confused with device-wide VPN protection. Brave’s broader feature list is at its feature overview.

“Ad-free” needs a qualification
Brave distinguishes third-party ads on webpages, which Shields can block, from Brave Ads that may appear in some browser surfaces. Its privacy policy says ad matching happens on-device and describes anonymized interaction events used to measure ad performance; some formats can be disabled. That means “Brave blocks webpage ads” is more accurate than saying the browser has no ads. Details are in Brave’s browser privacy policy and its privacy and security features page.
What features and sync matter on Android?
Vivaldi emphasizes a customizable browser
Vivaldi promotes customizable tabs and themes, private tabs, QR scanning, extensions, and sync for items including history, passwords, bookmarks, tabs, notes, and reading list. It says sync uses end-to-end encryption and that browsing data is hosted in Iceland. These are Vivaldi’s own claims, not an independent verification. See Vivaldi’s Android browser page.

Brave’s Android feature set is not identical to desktop
Brave says users can sync profiles between desktop and mobile and describes client-level encryption of sync data. Its Android availability guidance says Playlist and private windows with Tor are not currently available on Android. It also documents options to hide Brave News and Rewards-related interface elements if they add clutter. Check Brave’s guide to hiding or disabling features rather than assuming a desktop feature list applies to Android.
Sync encryption does not by itself determine what data you choose to sync or settle every privacy question. Review the sync settings in either browser and enable only the categories you want available across devices.
What should you do if a site breaks?
Start with the default protection settings, then change only the site that is failing. Both browsers provide per-site controls, so you do not have to weaken blocking everywhere to fix one page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Reload once. A temporary page or network error may not be caused by blocking.
- Open the site’s protection controls. In Vivaldi, use the address-bar Content Blocker; in Brave, open Shields for the current site.
- Relax the likely cause for that site only. For example, try allowing ads or trackers before turning off all protections. If script or cookie restrictions are enabled, adjust those only when they plausibly explain the failure.
- Reload and check the feature that failed. If it works, keep the exception limited to that site; if not, restore the previous setting and try a different site-level control.
Vivaldi’s blocking guide advises relaxing protection for sites that do not look or work as expected. Brave likewise warns that stronger Shields settings can break sites.
Which browser should you choose?
- Choose Vivaldi if you want three plainly named blocking levels, straightforward site exceptions, and the option to curate or import filter sources. Its Android browser also foregrounds interface customization and tools such as QR scanning and extensions.
- Choose Brave if you prefer Shields’ bundled protection categories, including documented fingerprinting defenses, and want Android controls for additional lists and custom filters.
- Choose based on workflow if sync, private-tab handling, browser customization, or a particular Android feature matters more than an unproven claim that one blocks more.
Menus and feature availability can change between app versions, so check the current Android settings and the vendors’ help pages when following a specific path.
