Suunto map and navigation features vary by watch. Suunto Vertical supports downloadable offline map areas through the Suunto app, while Suunto 7 uses a separate Suunto Wear app workflow. Route guidance is another feature: a transferred route may still appear as a line when the map background is off. Check the current guide for your exact model before depending on maps or navigation away from your phone.
Can you use Suunto watch maps without your phone?
Yes, on models and features that support offline use—but maps must be available on the watch first. Suunto says map areas are available worldwide and free, but they are not loaded onto the watch by default. The documented Vertical process is to choose areas in the Suunto app and download them to the watch. Suunto 7 has its own offline-map system through the Suunto Wear app. These instructions do not establish that every Suunto model supports downloadable offline maps.

Offline maps and route navigation are related but separate. A route can be transferred to a supported watch and followed, while the map background may be disabled or unavailable. The controls and capabilities also differ by model.
How to download offline maps on a Suunto Vertical
Suunto’s Vertical instructions require the watch to be paired with the Suunto app, updated, connected to a wireless network, and plugged into power during the download. Keep it within range of that network until the selected map areas finish downloading. See Suunto’s instructions for downloading offline maps for the current workflow.

- Connect the watch to a power source and keep it within network range until the download completes.
Vertical supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, according to Suunto. A network that requires a browser-based sign-in or web-page verification, as some hotel and airport networks do, will not work for this setup. If power or network connectivity is interrupted, Suunto says the download pauses and can resume when charging and the connection are restored. If it stalls without an obvious interruption, Suunto suggests canceling it in the app and starting again.
How to open and read maps on Vertical
Vertical can display a map during a GPS-recorded activity or from the watch face without starting an exercise. For an activity, Suunto’s guide describes choosing a GPS sport mode, selecting a map style in its Map setting, starting the activity, and then moving to the map screen. You can also open Map from the watch face. The guide describes button-based zoom and navigation controls; touch controls are available if enabled. See the Suunto Vertical map guide.

A map view is not necessarily a routable street map or turn-by-turn navigation. If the map menu is set to Off, Vertical shows a breadcrumb trail instead of the map background.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow route navigation differs from offline maps
Routes are planned in the Suunto app and transferred to the watch at the next sync. The Suunto Race 2 guide describes choosing Start exercise or Navigate only after selecting a route. A route used with Navigate only is not saved or logged in the Suunto app, according to that guide. These menu details and route behaviors are specific to Race 2 unless confirmed in another model’s current guide. See the Suunto Race 2 route guide.

- READ IT IN ANY LIGHT: Suunto Core 2 features an upgraded 1.3-inch LED dot-matrix display that returns 40% higher reflectivity than the previous Core, with a larger, cleaner layout. Your altitude, heading, and time stay sharp in direct sun or fully dark conditions.
- KNOW WHAT'S AHEAD: A refined altimeter, barometer, and compass read your elevation, air pressure, and heading in real time, while a built-in storm alarm warns you the moment pressure starts to drop. You see exactly what the terrain and sky are doing, with enough lead time to find shelter before the weather turns.
- BACKLIGHT FOR EVERY CONDITION: Switch freely between a green backlight for high contrast in haze and low light and a red backlight that protects your night vision. Whatever the light does, you get a clean, glare-free read, whether you are checking altitude at dusk or the compass long after dark.
- BUILT FOR THE WATER: Rated to 10 ATM with a dedicated Dive mode down to 100 m (330 ft), the Core 2 handles full submersion and tracks your depth and time below the surface. Swim, snorkel, or dive without a backup watch, and log every descent straight to the Suunto app.
- UP TO 15 MONTHS OF POWER: A single replaceable cell keeps the Core 2 running for up to 15 months, so a charger never makes your packing list. Head out on long expeditions or back-to-back trips knowing your watch will still be tracking when you reach the summit weeks later.
Race 2 can show the route line without a map background when offline maps are off. Its guide also documents distance to the next waypoint or route end, optional turn-by-turn instructions with a sound alert, and an off-route warning when the wearer is more than 100 m (330 ft) from the route. The watch can signal when the wearer returns to the route. Turn-by-turn instructions must be enabled while creating the route.
Take extra care with routes that cross themselves. Suunto warns that the watch may interpret a wrong turn at a crossing as an intentional change of direction. Follow the breadcrumb trail to check whether you are still on the intended section.

Suunto 7 uses a different map workflow
Suunto 7 uses the Suunto Wear app, not the Vertical app steps above. Its guide describes an outdoor map, a winter map, and 15 sport-specific heatmap styles. Maps and heatmaps can be used without a phone or internet connection once available offline. Local areas are automatically downloaded or updated while the watch is charging and connected to Wi-Fi; custom offline areas can also be prepared for travel.
Suunto reports that Suunto 7’s automatically downloaded local map area ranges approximately from 35 km × 35 km to 50 km × 50 km, depending on location. That range applies to Suunto 7, not Vertical or other Suunto watches. The guide says its heatmaps are based on exercises shared publicly. See the Suunto 7 map guide.
